The Lodge sits on top of a hillside on four acres (largely wooded), just 1.5 miles from downtown Nevada City, overlooking Tahoe National Forest Lands.

It provides a cozy space for a romantic get away but also is large enough for two couples, in-laws or a small group of friends outing.

Owl Lodge offers peace and outdoor beauty for guests seeking time in nature, while just 2 minutes drive (10 minute bike ride and 20 minute walk) from historic Nevada City's theater, local shops, and gourmet restaurants.

In addition, there are many other wonderful activities to partake in all year round and seasonally including the following:snow skiing, swimming, hiking, fishing, boating, mountain biking, etc.

Guest Space: There are three bedrooms, at the Lodge (1 with a full bed, 1 with a queen bed and 1 with two twins). There is also a sleeping loft with annexed bathroom with one twin. There are two bathrooms (1 with a shower and 1 with a bathtub). There is a maximum of three parking spaces available for our guests cars (Max 3). (Please not our special driveway instructions below). Sugar Bowl Ski Resort is just 45 minutes away, an amazing mountain-bike trail entrance that goes for 120 miles is just half a mile away. Five vineyards are less than 30 minutes from Owl Lodge and the “magical,” “sun-hugged,” “granite-lined” Yuba River is just seven miles away. The Nevada Theater, where Mark Twain read in the 1860s, just 3 miles away still features monthly plays..

The Tahoe National Forest is located in the northern Sierra Nevada (east of Sacramento). Rivers, snow capped peaks and dense forests offer outstanding recreation year round.

Possibilities for You & Owl Lodge. . ..

A Family GetAway

Owl Lodge is excellent for families seeking a getaway that offers them a happy, fun and welcoming place to be together and an excellent 'base camp' for outdoor adventures like skiing, hiking, swimming, fishing, golfing and sightseeing.

A Writers Retreat

Because of the serenity and peace that the house offers -- as well as the inspiring view -- Owl Lodge is an excellent place for writers that are seeking a quite and inspirational place to do their writing. Owl Lodge offers writers desks for this very purpose. Too focused on writing to want to stop and make a meal -- you can pop out and be downtown in less than 2 minutes to enjoy one of Nevada City's excellent restaurants.

Nature Outdoor Enthusiast

Come enjoy all that this beautiful outdoors has to offer by way of hiking, biking, swimming, fishing, skiing - you name it - with your family or friends. The Lodge is on the edge of the forest so some wild animals, birds and of course insects may be found on the property.

Skiing

Nevada City is usually below the snow line but it’s close enough to be atop a world-class mountain in less than an hour. The closest ski resorts are 45 minutes east on Donner Summit. Here you’ll find Sugar Bowl, Donner Ski Ranch, Soda Springs, Boreal Mountain Resort and Royal Gorge Cross Country Ski Resort.

Another 15 minutes will take you to Northstar, Tahoe-Donner, Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows. Steep Hollow, a nearby cross-country ski trail system marked by the Nordic Skiers of Nevada County, is located on Highway 20 just past the Alpha-Omega rest stop 18 miles east of Nevada City.

Kayaking and Rafting

Nevada City is considered the central hub of the West Coast for water sports enthusiasts of all types-, downtown Nevada City is a short drive from the South Yuba, American, Bear and the south and middle sections of the North Fork of the Yuba river.

Lakes

Bullards Bar was rated by Water Ski Magazine as one of the best recreational lakes in the United States. Emerald Cove Marina offers state of the art rental ski boats, patio cruisers, and fishing boats. While on land, Bullards Bar Recreation area provides for hiking, mountain biking, wildlife watching and camping.

Mountain Biking

For mountain bike riders, Nevada County is a year-round playground. Lush forests, rivers and lakes provide the backdrop for a pleasant cruise or a healthy cycling workout.

Reno is just one hour and fifteen minutes away.

We are pet friendly as long as you your pet is fully house trained and ask for a pet fee of $69 to pay for shampooing the rugs.

Lodge Pricing - Note that in order to accommodate different numbers of guests per reservation. The Lodge pricing shown is for 4 guests. For each guest after 4 we charge an additional fee to cover additional cleaning, supplies and utility expenses. This helps to keep the Lodge affordable for small groups - but allows a fair use price for larger numbers.

IMPORTANT NOTES FOR POTENTIAL GUESTS: The Lodge was built in the 1960s and many of the furnishings (except the beds which are less than 2 years old) are “classic”. The condition of the Lodge will reflect that it’s a charming, older building, think 'Grandmother's house'. Most people love it (like we do). If you are a perfectionist and tend to like luxury and everything brand new - There are much more expensive lodges that will meet your expectations.

Also - Owl Lodge is on a largely wooded lot in the midst of a forested natural area. Like all of Northern California - there is Poison Oak, Ticks, and other wildlife, bugs and plants on the property (that could cause an allergic reaction or other harm) -and the surrounding areas throughout the Sierra Nevada Region. If you do not feel comfortable with a chance encounter with wildlife, bugs or plants indigenous to the region - a B&B in town might suit you better.

However - if you are an outdoor or nature enthusiast you will likely love it - and know if its needed to take precautions when out of doors.

IMPORTANT Driveway and Parking

The Lodge is at the top of the long drive – (which is one reason it has

such a great view) - the gravel drive gets steep near the top - 4 WD or All Wheel drive vehicles are recommended (and required in snow)- front wheel drive cars driven by drivers with experience on gravel roads usually do just fine. We do NOT allow rear wheel drive cars at the top - but there is plenty of parking at the midpoint and bottom of the drive. In snow conditions only 4WDs are recommended.

NOTE _ Owners are occasionally on site at the Lodge. If so - there is a separate cottage on the property where the owners will stay.

Nevada City is in close proximity to the Sierra Nevada range which also offers an unlimited supply of pristine mountain lakes for recreational calm-water kayaking and canoeing

Panning for Gold

If you know where to look, it's not hard to find gold in Nevada County rivers. Some of the most accessible gold panning locations are on the South Yuba River at Bridgeport, Edwards Crossing and Washington, and on the Middle Yuba River at Oregon Creek. These are public stretches of river so you don't have to worry about claimjumping.

Vineyards and Wine Tasting

Enjoy the areas local wine and easily visit half a dozen vineyards less than 30 minutes from Owl Lodge and Nevada City.

Swimming, Fishing and Rafting the Yuba River

The Yuba is a 'magical,' 'sun-hugged,' 'granite-lined' River just 10 minutes from Owl Lodge north of town. The South Fork of the Yuba offers trout fishing, Class V kayaking, and summer lounging as it flows through a granite gorge in the Sierra foothills. The river also offers excellent swimming options in season.

BEST SWIMMING HOLE: 'Cliff jumps, nudist beaches, family-friendly sandbars--there are oodles of options' on the South Fork of the Yuba. But if you want to combine a hike with a swim, we recommend the two-mile Independence Trail from Highway 49 to Rush Creek, where you can dive off granite cliffs. Just 10 minutes from Owl Lodge is one of the very best swimming spots.

Hiking

Guests can enjoy the hiking trail that runs along a manmade stream right from the backdoor. In addition, one of the largest park trails Pioneer trail is easily accessible just .6 miles from the Lodge. There is also parking available for cars and the first leg of the hike through a beautiful stately forest goes for 22 miles to a pristine and private lake. This trail is also excellent for mountain bikers and horse back riding.

For mountain bike riders, Nevada County is a year-round playground. Lush forests, rivers and lakes provide the backdrop for a pleasant cruise or a healthy cycling workout.

Horseback Riding

Horseback riding is also available on the Pioneer trail (mentioned above) which is extensive and offers plenty of room to roam and explore.

Golfing

Golfers enjoy two public courses and three semiprivate golf courses in the general Grass Valley-Nevada City area. Local courses are open year-around.

Lakes

Bullards Bar (30 minutes away) was rated by Water Ski Magazine as one of the best recreational lakes in the United States. Emerald Cove Marina offers state of the art rental ski boats, patio cruisers, and fishing boats. While on land, Bullards Bar Recreation area provides for hiking, mountain biking, wildlife watching and camping.

Scotts Flat Lake Reservoir is just 15 minutes away where you can spend the day fishing or enjoy the water sports which include swimming, boating and water skiing. Fishing for the fighting rainbow trout is excellent and Small and Large Mouth Black Bass, Brown Trout and Kokonee are abundant.
