Located 30 minutes from Edenton and 30 minutes from Elizabeth City. 60-90 minutes from Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake (lots of military bases and museums) and the Outer Banks . There are many small towns close by to visit and explore.
The entire upstairs of the home has a fully equipped kitchen and sleeps 7 comfortably . There is a sleeper sofa which can sleep 2 more for an additional fee of 40 per night. There is a 70' flat screen in the great room. Cable TV Wireless internet is provided. Enjoy the wonderful southern breeze coming from over the water on the pier while watching the pair of eagles, hawks, egrets and on rare occasions, dolphins. The exterior areas of the home are continuously improved with garden statuary, palm trees and other surprizes to create a mini resort atmosphere. The children will enjoy using the cove, picking up clams or crabs off of its sandy bottom. There is a crab pot provided and they can enjoy kayaking in the shallow cove. For the more adventurous, there are many canals, and you can spend a few hours exploring them in the kayaks. There are nine freshwater rivers that feed into this sound making it a great place to fish. So a boat would be really nice to have. The ramp is located in the community center about 3 minutes away. Exactly as We Had Hoped
Our family take two mini vacations a year. This time we decided to do a non-tourist, non event kind of vacation. This property was perfect. The home was very tastefully decorated, and we enjoyed the host's personal art, which could be seen in every room. The layout of the home and the outside lent itself to a "stay home" kind of vacation, yet when someone needed space there was somewhere, inside or outside to go. The outside was absolutely what we needed. Fishing occurred every morning either from the dock or out in the canoe, and the kayaks went out about twice a day. Sitting outside having coffee in the morning is an absolute requirement. Thank you very much.

Perfect way to relax with the family before school starts!
This home is beautiful and well-equipped for all your needs. We loved sitting outside and watching the sunrise with our cups of coffee in hand. When the waters were calm, the kayaks were perfect for exploring...we were even brave enough to go through the culvert to make the circuit around the whole island! If you like birds, you'll love seeing the osprey, bald eagles, cormorants, woodpeckers, and so much more. A trip to the Outer Banks is just 1 1/2 hrs away and we highly recommend getting donuts at Duck Donuts and having dinner at the Black Pelican. We had two high schoolers and two college students with us and everyone enjoyed their stay. Thank you so much!

Can't say enough about this property ...
Nora and Alan have it all covered! This property was amazing and had everything you could ever want in a vacation rental ... Private beach, kayaks, bikes, long dock stretching over the water, fire pit, covered grill and games, and that's just outside (where we spent 80% of our time). Inside was just as impressive with modern appliances and amenities. In 5 days we only left the property once and that was to pick up food for grilling. Not enough stars to do this place justice! Can't wait to visit again.

Awesome!
I was one of 6 former college room-mates who met for an annual weekend getaway--we had an awesome time! The house was roomy with comfortable beds and a large dining room table where we enjoyed catching up. We came prepared to cook/steam our own seafood but the kitchen was well equipped to prepare most anything (and the owner even offered his steamer pot). Our BEST meal was eaten outside on the picnic table located halfway down the dock--nice breeze, beautiful sunset, and the relaxing sound of gentle waves washing below the pier. Our early risers enjoyed morning coffee in the sunroom overlooking the Sound. With swimming, kayaking, and snoozing on the hammock/beach chairs, there was plenty to do on the property but we couldn't resist a trip into Edenton. We rented paddleboards for $5/hr (a real bargain), sampled Orange-ades from the fountain at the local pharmacy, and feasted on the local chili, cornbread, and sandwiches at Nothin Fancy Cafe. (We also had great pizza at Tommy's before our arrival.) The owners have really tried to think of everything. They had lots of information about the local area and a binder to provide all the details needed to enjoy the property. Alan checked on us the first day and even returned on Saturday to give us a boat tour of the Sound and River! We could not have asked for a better weekend and will definitely consider a return trip!

Great Vacation Spot!
We just returned from a fantastic vacation. The house was even better than it looks in the pictures (and it looks incredible). We had so much fun crabbing and fishing from the pier, even though we didn't get any keepers. The house is furnished with everything needed for a great vacation. We really liked the location and the towns of Edenton and Hertford were lovely to visit. Thank you so much for making this such a memorable vacation.

We love the water and the serenity of nature. Our home in Virginia Beach overlooked a beautiful reservoir where wildlife abounds. Our retirement dream was to find a home like ours in Virginia but smaller and on the intra-coastal waterway in a smaller community where peace and quiet abounds. That the idea of rush hour was that if you listened real carefully you might be able to hear the sound of a golf cart or a lonely car go by. I think I can say we succeeded in that point.

After making our getaway available year round to travelers since 2013, we have decided open up the home for just 2-3 months every summer.

Why they chose this property

My husband and I discovered Holiday Island while on a trip in 2012. We fell in love with the view from the home and its location midway between two wonderful towns---Edenton and Elizabeth City. We were able to purchase the house and begin the process of creating our retirement paradise/resort. Along the way, our friends were so interested in our project; they asked if they could rent it out for a weekend or week. We decided to make it available year round in early 2013. Holiday Island is not a 'touristy destination'. It is just a wonderful area to relax, take a walk or just sip coffee (or wine). A 181 foot long pier has been built with a 16x24 platform in the middle with a picnic table on it. We do keep our boat there on the lift. On beautiful boating days on the largest freshwater sound in the country, you may like to take a ride with us . We acquired the lot right next door to the house which now provides an additional 81 feet of sound front privacy. The pier is located inside of a cove. The water is 8-24 inches deep at the bulkhead and about 12 inches deeper at the end of the pier. At the edge of the cove the water is 5 feet deep, once outside of the cove it goes to 15-20 feet deep. The bottom of the cove is sandy with some sea grass. It is a great place to launch kayaks that are provided, or let the children play. The adjacent lot has enabled us to add a beach, a place to play corn hole, bocce or croquet along with a second pergola and palm tree oasis.
We added a beautiful barn to the adjacent lot this past summer which will eventually house a game room, movie room and studio. Plus, an in ground pool is coming!

What makes this property unique

Once you leave the island, 15 minutes away is the town of Hertford ,chartered in 1758, making it the seventh oldest town on North Carolina. It is a lovely little town with an old school pharmacy and a soda fountain counter. There is an art gallery, coffee shop, dress shop, and antique store for something to do on a rainy day.
The Albemarle Plantation is next door to Holiday Island. The public is welcome to dine in their fabulous clubhouse and grill. The food is super and we always feel welcome there! More information about restaurants and activities are available in the welcome package.
In this area, history abounds with Edenton established in November 6, 1712 and Elizabeth City in 1793. The Outer Banks, Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills and many other towns are an hour to an hour and half away. You can take a day trip to visit the ocean and avoid the traffic inconvenience and high cost of staying there. Of course, the fishing is great here and boating makes the area even more enjoyable. There are six kayaks on the property. You can rent additional boats from Hertford. You can bring your own boat and launch from the boat ramp on the island. The pier has approximately 16-30 inch water level in the summer and you can tie up your boat or PWC there or use our other lot.
