About this property

Beautiful Mountainside Waterview Home on Gorgeous Orcas Island

Accommodations: 5 bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms, living room, dining room, gourmet kitchen, media room (lite), playrooms/yoga room, sauna, hot tub, decks with views, lots of closets, workshop, garages, outbuildings… (Comfortably sleeps 10, can sleep up to 12.)

This is a fabulous house on a wonderful island in one of the most beautiful and romantic places in the world. It takes about 3 hours (drive and ferry) to get here from Seattle. Or, you can take a small plane from Seattle in about thirty minutes. Have your vacation, get-together, private time, or retreat in this comfortable, accommodating house, located on magnificent, magical Orcas Island. Set on five acres, maximizing distant panoramic vistas while retaining privacy, this house is spacious and welcoming, with captivating, expansive views, mostly north to Canada up the Strait of Georgia. Hang out and relax with friends and family. Watch beautiful sunsets, observe bald eagles and deer, be entertained by hummingbirds, luxuriate in the hot tub while you stare at the stars.

This house has many accommodations and choices. It has been tastefully and carefully furnished (by the owner/designer/architect) with comfort in mind. There is a main staircase and a secondary staircase. The dining room table seats 8-10 (or a friendly 12) and there is a charming, red,-enameled, propane stove/heater in the room. The open plan sweeps from dining to livingroom where there is a cathedral ceiling, large, wood-burning fireplace, and floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the magnificent view. The kitchen is fully equipped with a sub-zero refrigerator, main sink and bar sink (both with disposals), JennAir stovetop, dual convection oven, microwave, blender, waffle-maker, small toaster, coffee maker, and all the utensils and tools you need to prepare lovely meals and snacks. There is a large, walk-in pantry. The private, main suite has a bedroom with a luxuriously comfortable queen-sized bed. The main bathroom has a king-sized bath, glass-enclosed shower, two sinks, and a sauna. The closets in the main suite are the size of an apartment in Manhattan (ok, almost, but one does have a window seat and built-in dresser). The kids have a wing all their own too, with two bedrooms and two twin-sized beds in each. An adjacent sunlit, southwest-facing bathroom -- with shower, huge bathtub, and two sinks -- give kids plenty of space. The media room with sofa, recliner, VCR, and CD players, and large TV monitor (with plenty of CDs but no TV connection), is next to the kid’s bedrooms. The middle guest room has another fabulous, hotel-quality queen-sized bed, and an adjacent bathroom with shower. There are two rooms with another hotel-quality queen-sized bed, and some mattress-sofas, and we are not even sure how to label these two luxurious spaces (bedroom/yoga room? bedroom/ballet room? bedroom/playroom?) Even the laundry room is generous. Throughout the house there are small crawl spaces within closets. The cedar decks stretch the entire northwest side/length of the house. The private hot tub on the deck is surrounded by madronas and evergreen trees but still has peek-a-boo views of Crescent Beach in one direction and Canada in another. There is a teak table and chairs with sun umbrella for fabulous outdoor dining, and lounge chairs for sunbathing.

Walk down the mountain past Crescent Beach to Eastsound Village, about a mile from the house, where you will find shops, restaurants, cafes, book store, and groceries. Take in a summer chamber music concert in town. Come for the renown film festival. Hike or bike on nearby Mount Constitution in Moran State Park or hike the reclaimed Turtle Back Mountain trail. Go kayaking, whale watching, or just wandering. Play games, finish puzzles. (This is a Bananagrams-friendly establishment!) Send your kids to classic Orkilla summer camp and be on the same island, but with some adult time of your own. Even, dare we say, do your work here. Sit at the dining room table, gazing from computer (with high speed connection) to the seemingly infinite view. It is inspirational.

The house is so very sweet that when we are there we always long to stay. It is perfect for family vacations, reunions, friend’s time away, writer’s retreats, or whatever. It is a magical, memorable place. Come, enjoy yourself here.

Idyllic getaway
We loved this well-appointed home, and especially loved the location—close to Eastsound and Moran State Park. We could also see the lights from the city of Vancouver at night from the spacious outdoor deck!

The view from the deck!!
This house is perfect in my opinion. Every night I couldn't wait for morning coffee on the deck. There were 8 of us and we were all super comfortable. Great location. We had a blast.

lovely week
We were a couple families staying on Orcas while our children went to a day camp on the island. A workcation! The house was a short drive to town, camp, and Moran. It was so relaxing working with the amazing view each day. The house is huge, and we were quite spread out. The kitchen is well-appointed, the sunsets spectacular. We only used the hot tub once or twice. (I suspect it would have been used more if it wasn't summer.) The kids really enjoyed the jack-and-jill bedroom set-up. The bonus bedroom is really a suite -with a living area (and futon) joined to a bedroom. This suite does not have easy access to a bathroom, which other reviewers have mentioned. But waking up to the views definitely make the hassle of 'middle of the night trips downstairs' worth it.

We purchased this house in 2007 when we walked in at sunset and the view took our breath away. We are a family of four, a mother who is an architect (trained at MIT) and a father who is museum professional. The mother grew up in New Jersey and the father in Texas. We met when we were each living in San Francisco and became inextricably bound by our shared sense of humor and love of culture. For many years, we have run a reasonably successful design business doing educational-purpose projects. Of course, as our kids have grown, we have not gone to Orcas Island as often as we have wished, despite its incredible magnetic draw. Whenever we are there we have a fabulous, memorable time and we hate to leave. Playing, relaxing, or working here -- staring out across the water and islands. It is altogether GLORIOUS. Orcas and the house are magical.

Why they chose this property

We live and work in Seattle and wanted to have a remote get-away house. We looked at all of the islands and rural properties we could, and even considered designing and building our own home. But, the nature of building in so remote a place would entail a process that would be excruciatingly slow and we were impatient to have a place. This home was The One that we fell in love with after seeing dozens of other possibilities. So many people we know (and some we don't) have had remarkable moments on Orcas -- life-changing, inspirational, poignant moments. We are convinced that Orcas is the best and most phenomenal of the San Juan Islands. And we love this house and the island.

What makes this property unique

The floor to ceiling, wall to wall windows in the main rooms that face the incredible view are enough to make us want to stay forever. The spacious, commodious kitchen made me into a cook (previously, I was only a reluctant and occasional kitchen-dweller). The house with all of its rooms and closets within closets is a hide-and-seek paradise for kids, and the house is so large that you can easily find privacy or company. Every day there is something special here. The first night we stayed here, a deer ran across the deck. One day, a bald eagle settled for a while in the meadow below. Hummingbirds visit us often. In winter, looking out over an artist's dream view while being warmed by the heat of the fireplace is the best feeling in the world. Sitting in the hot tub under the stars underscored that we had made absolutely the right choice. I am not kidding. It is a dream come true.
