About Lizi (Elizabeth)

We lived at the Blue Mountain Getaway with our five children for 5 years before work moved us to Hawaii. We loved it so much we could not let it go and believed others would find and appreciate the same serenity, beauty and grandeur of this fabulous home.

Lizi (Elizabeth) purchased this house in 2001

Why Lizi (Elizabeth) chose Monticello

We purchased the Blue Mountain Getaway because we fell in love with the crisp clean air, the panoramic view, and the seclusion amidst nature while still retaining the comforts of a spacious modern home.

What makes this house unique

If you want natural seclusion while centrally located within 12 State and National Parks and Monuments and all that location provides, the Getaway is your chance.

Not a kid friendly house!

  • 2 of 5

Pros:

Near Canyonlands (went to Needles-the cowboy cave hike was super fun with a wood ladder up to views), Natural Bridges (huge arch was amazing), and Arches Parks (kids loved the sandbox arch the best), Five Kiva Pueblo (highly recommend this hike-would skip the nearby visitor center that was expensive), Canyon Discovery Center (kids loved an afternoon here), and Monticello LDS Temple (gorgeous mini temple)

Large VHS library

Pretty view of mtn

Foosball & air hockey table

Lots of board games

Highchair

Crib

Huge Kitchen

Large Master Suite w/double shower

Cons:

Can't use the garage-caretakers live there.

Locks in Master Bathroom are installed backwards so you could lock someone into the bathroom but not out. No Locks in the Weapons Room (queen bedroom upstairs-caretakers called it the weapon room-think of all the ninja turtle weapons on the walls plus ninja stars) nor the jack n jill bathroom that is between weapon room and kid room. And yet there is a lock on the large kid bedroom that the kids could lock??

Weapon room has a large opening at the top of its outside wall so there is no privacy noise wise.

Ship bell installed in the kid room for the kids to ring.

No Central Heat (or A/C) - There is in floor heat, and window A/C.

Must be extremely careful with water-septic system/well water.

Downstairs showerhead was gunked up so you have to use the handheld showerhead.

Old windows (80s or 90s house) that all need to be replaced. We ended up having to replace their sliding door for $370 because it somehow broke while we were there. We will never know what really happened-whether a bird hit it or if one of the 3 year olds that were outside threw one of the one million small rocks they have as zeroscape around the outside deck. If a small rock broke it that means the windows are just too old or weather-worn and aren't safe. There was already a window in the house that had a huge crack in it and the caretaker said that other windows had been broken by guests. So unless you want to replace a window don't let the kids outside and don't touch the windows! Same goes for the window blinds-they have easy to break mini-blinds that we got to replace because-KIDS!

Very spacious home near Blue Mtns and Utah parks

  • 4 of 5

Great home with 4 bedrooms and 3 full baths. Town of Monticello is very small with just a few restaurants. But good location to visit arches canyonlands Moab and mesa Verde. Hosts were very gracious. Kids loved playing football and air hockey. We had a great game night with all the board games they had on hand.

Awesome place! We had two families with plenty of room. Very accommodating.

  • 5 of 5

Great basecamp for Canyonlands, Natural Bridges, Mesa Verde, etc. we were going to stay in Moab, but we were so happy we stayed here. Much more quiet and secluded. Best vacation we've had. We'd love to do it every year!

Fantatstic Place! Clean, roomy, great location.

  • 5 of 5

Clean is our number one checklist item, and this place was clean, roomy, and it has a well stocked kitchen. We would definitely stay here again. We have stayed in VRBO locations from Hawaii to Italy, and this was a superb house. It has a well equipped game and exercise room. There were only six of us (three couples), but the house could easily take many more. The owner/managers were very helpful. We arrived late on the first day, and the manager was there without a complaint. Whenever we had a question, they had an answer. You are in a secluded spot where there are deer in the adjoining fields every morning. We used this as a base camp to make day trips to different National Parks and National Monuments. We spent a day at Mesa Verde National Park - take the Cliff Palace tour. We also went to Natural Bridges National Monument - if you spend the day, there are some great short hikes. We took a drive to Hovenweep National Monument and Four Corners. At the main Hovenweep site ask the Ranger for directions to the satellite locations, because they are not well marked, and you really need a high clearance vehicle. At Four Corners there is a $5 per person admission fee charged by the Navajo nation, because it is on their reservation, and it is totally worth it. If you look out to the southeast, you can actually see Shiprock in the distance from the house. We had a great time!

Great home base for exploring the area

  • 4 of 5

Our family very much enjoyed our stay here. Outdoor recreation (ATV, Hiking, Fishing, Kayaking, sightseeing, wildlife viewing) in this general area is incredible. The cabin is convenient to national forest and forest roads as well as highway 191. Lots of ATV opportunity---most convenient for 50" machines if you want to get to Abajo peaks or Camp Jackson areas. It's also at a high point near highway 191 so you're a little more elevated which makes for beautiful cool evenings in July. The home was spacious and accommodated us very well. The home and furnishings are showing a little age but clean and comfortable. Lots of games for the kids. Spacious kitchen for preparing meals for a crew. Parking is sufficient if you haul toys on a trailer. Would not hesitate to stay here again. Interactions with hosts and caretakers were all good.

The turn off of the 191 is located around mile marker 63, it is onto a dirt road (you will see a sign for the Blue Mountain Ranch owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, so you'll know you are going in the right direction) There is a sign for The Getaway at the private road to the house, it is the 3rd road on the left.
