Hale Kōlea Cabin is a labor of love project by owner, Richard Cheney and his partner Kalani Chong. Richard, a graduate of University of Michigan, grew up in Williamston, Michigan and has been a Hawaii resident for over 35 years. Richard is a 12-time Honolulu Marathon and 3-time Iron Man finisher. His partner Kalani is a Native Hawaiian whose lineage can be traced back to Hawaii's Princess Ka'iulani. Kalani enjoys traveling to UNESCO World Heritage Sites and collecting vinyl records as art. Both live in Honolulu, Hawaii and work in the health care industry.
Richard Cheney purchased this cabin in 2012
Richard and Kalani unknowingly fell in love with Talkeetna while on a March 2012 winter vacation that began with Anchorage, then Fairbanks and eventually ended with a picturesque Aurora train ride to the charming town of Talkeetna. One night's stay in Trapper John's Cabin is all it took to launch research of available real estate that quickly led to groundbreaking four months later on July 3, 2012.
For the past 3 years, a kōlea bird or Pacific Golden Plover appeared every August at Richard and Kalani's residence in Honolulu, Hawaii. Every day this kōlea bird could be seen grazing the grassy parts of their property for an insatiable appetite of insects, all while enjoying the warm Hawaiian sun. Every April, their bird would vanish and heed its migratory call to flock north to Alaska. This miracle instinct fittingly inspired the cabin's name, Hale Kōlea (Ha-lay Co-lay-ah) or 'Kōlea House'.
We sincerely appreciate your interest in making Hale Kolea Cabin as a part of your next Alaskan adventure. We look forward to your stay.

We loved our stay at this beautiful cabin! It really couldn't have been better. One of the best equipped rentals we've stayed in with lots of kitchen staples. Jolene and her lovely family checked us in, with their adorable little girls providing helpful information and cuteness! They provided great information on local ATV trails and we were able to ride from the driveway about 16 miles out with some beautiful views of Talkeetna River and the mountains. This cabin brought our two favorite places together- Alaska and Hawaii! The Hawaiian theme is fun and we loved learning about the artwork. The sauna is great!! We want to build our own now! This cabin is clean, comfortable, and well-equipped, do not hesitate, you will pay a lot more for a lot less at other rentals.
Coming back for sure
Very cozy cabin with a great location. Just as described. Owner was very accommodating to a change in our schedule. I highly recommend staying here.
This cabin was the perfect winter wked getaway from Anchorage and the sauna was amazing.
Once you walk in the door you are transported to a Hawaiian environment. Surf board on the wall, excellent artwork from the Islands make you feel like you are in a lush rainforest in Hawaii. The windows bring the outside in and the sauna is so awesome to warm you up from hiking in Denali National Park. This place is "stocked" with spices, mosquito spray and things you would normally buy on your trip. We left our "bear spray" there to add to the collection. Jolene, the manager, will show you how everything works and is a native so knows the Talkeetna area well. The shower, linens and sauna make you think you are in a high end suite, then you walk out the door to paradise. Loved the K2 flights that you can walk to from the cabin. The town is walking distance but you need to know your location because it gets dark there--no street lights. I hear you can see the Northern Lights from there. We weren't lucky because of clouds. Just beware of cruise ship passengers by the bus loads invading the small quaint town. Thank you Richard and Kalani.
This cabin was even nicer in person than in the pictures online. I was so excited to see it, it is just so nice. We really enjoyed the nice touches like the box of Hawaiian chocolates, the sauna, the comfortable bed, the cleanliness, all the storage space, the washer and dryer, stunning kitchen, and the provided toiletries and laundry detergent. The place is quiet and close enough to town for a walk, although it was kind of rainy when we were there so we didn't. Richard was so great to deal with during the reservation process, and Jolene, the property manager, was super friendly and helpful. She met us there and gave us the tour, and we were in contact with her throughout our stay.
The only downside was the wifi and the TV. Doesn't seem like a priority when vacationing in Alaska, but I knew we would spend several days in Denali without any type of connection to the "outside world" for a few days. I purposely chose this cabin because it advertised "television" and "internet connection." It actually only has Netflix, which was kind of a bummer, but I thought at least we have wifi. It didn't work almost the entire time we were there - both the Netflix and the wifi. Jolene made several attempts to diagnose the problem, and she called Richard who also made a call to the provider - which we appreciated. But it really stunk, I had some work stuff I had hoped to catch up on, and we were looking forward to some built-in "down time" during our 3 week trip. Thankfully we brought books and magazines, and even though we didn't use them, the cabin is stocked with games and DVDs. So I only mention it for future guests to beware, if you need this, you might want to check with Richard to make sure whatever the problem is, it was resolved. If this isn't important to you, then I highly recommend. The place is a stunner!! One of the nicest places we have ever rented.
Talkeetna is the 'gateway' to Denali National Park & a great home base for activities such as: flightseeing tours to Denali (Mt. McKinley); mountaineering; salmon & fly fishing; hunting; horse back ridding; zip lining; cross country skiing; wilderness hiking; snow machining; dog sledding; shopping; restaurants and local craft fairs.
Evening summer concerts in the park are a favorite attraction for locals and visitors. Talkeetna was the inspiration for the popular TV series, 'Northern Exposure'.
Popular festivals are the Moose On The Loose parade & auction in July and Winterfest during the entire month of December, culminating with the Wilderness Woman contest and Bachelor Auction & Ball.
The core downtown district is classified as a National Historic Site which includes buildings dating back to the early 1900s, including Nagley's General Store, Fairview Inn and the Talkeetna Roadhouse. Mayor of Talkeetna is a cat named Stubbs.
