Modern Cabin, private trails into National Park, 100% solar, luxe amenities

Bedrooms 1
Space 800 sq ft
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Peaceful, natural setting, 1 BA, 1BD on Park Border. Remote, yet easy access.

Set within hundreds of acres of natural desert landscape, Think Tank is located along the Joshua Tree National Park boundary near the West Park entrance. The gated and unobtrusively fenced property is one of the few truly secluded vacation rental homes in Joshua Tree, and sits within an active wildlife corridor, with private trailheads right into the park. There's both a drum bbq and a weber kettle just off the kitchen next to a huge concrete slab outdoor table overlooking the large stone fire pit. A wood-fired hot tub provides the zen of outdoor soaking. Inside, polished concrete floors support luxe amenities such as on-demand hot water, a seamless glass shower, Jenn Air gas cooktop, fridge, dishwasher, cable tv, and wifi, which all run off of a state-of-the- art 100% solar system. Evaporative air conditioning and a propane fireplace effectively heat and cool the home, which has a queen bed with an optional memory foam topper for firmness adjustments. Chef-grade cookware, blender, coffeemaker, toaster, basic spices, oils and vinegars, coffee, teas, reading materials, and movies provided. But for all of its dark night skies and feeling of remoteness (the nearest structure is almost a quarter of a mile away), Think Tank is only about six minutes from downtown Joshua Tree, and in the secure Monument Manor area.

As a place to intimately experience the peacefulness of the Mojave desert, the property is a transformative spot for one person seeking solitude or for a couple's getaway. Over half of our guests pay us the ultimate compliment of returning yearly. However, Think Tank not suited for more than two adults or events. Out of consideration to our resident wildlife of rabbits, raptors, quail, tortoise, lizards, coyote and bobcat, we can no longer take pets.

We encourage long stays, with weekly rates at 1,275. and the monthly rate at 2,950. (or about 100 dollars per night) for one month and 2,100.00 per month for multiple months. Nightly stays are 235. per night. Please click on the "rates" tab below the photos for accurate pricing, as the VRBO "average pricing" feature in the headline can be misleading! It combines all of the rates from nightly to monthly, and deduce an average. This is not an optional feature, so I apologize for any misdirection that this formatting may have caused.

About Miriam

As a set designer, I'm in love with the visual drama of the California high desert. I was so excited when I found this five acres of Mojave bliss....and have since acquired the adjacent acreage as a conservation buffer. I couldn't wait to start working with the palette of homestead architecture, native plants, seasons, and vistas that Joshua Tree offers. My hope is that the resulting home reflects the unassuming laid-back lifestyle that I value but sometimes find difficult to enjoy in LA, while also reflecting a respect for nature, warmth, a bit of humor, and relaxation with the necessary flourishes (good art, good books, WiFi and tubing under the stars!). It's a place to be a city mouse or a country mouse, as the mood suits!

Miriam purchased this cabin in 2010

Why Miriam chose Joshua Tree

Think Tank is one of those "forever" spots!

What makes this cabin unique

Being in a house on the border of a wilderness area is a powerful reminder of many things. I love this house for helping me to remember how many stars there are in a night dark sky, what the sound of quiet feels like, and how to gauge the passing of hours by the movement of light and color across a rock mountain outside a window.

Our Perfect Secluded Desert Experience!

  • 5 of 5

It was wonderful to experience this unique property in the desert--lovely seclusion, quiet and peaceful; beautiful garden design with sculpture and natural plants, and the wonderful "critter pond" which brought all kinds of birds and wildlife in close. The house itself was perfect--cozy and just right. Comfy bed, great shower, well equipped kitchen, lots of great DVDs, a killer sound system (!), reliable wifi -- and it all runs off of 100% solar. We were lucky enough to be there when the Morongo Basin Desert-Wise Landscape Tour was on and this property was included, so we were able to meet Miriam and also see other gardens in the area, thanks to her. She's an amazing person and a lovely host.

Staying here was a wonderful, memorable experience. Oh, and Joshua Tree National Park was amazing, too!

A Fun, Relaxing, Beautiful Place

  • 5 of 5

I stayed here for one week with my wife. We were blown away at the property as soon as we pulled up. It was beautiful; the house, landscaping, views, everything. On top of the beautiful property the owner had everything set up perfect at the house. All the details covered. Everything you need for a free and easy time. Location could not be better if you are visiting the park. Right down the road from one of the main entrances and nice hiking trails accessible from the house. Lots of wildlife on the property, we even saw a bobcat that walked right across the back yard for us to watch from the kitchen window. The house itself is great. Great shower, kitchen, lots of movies and cds, you can see the mountains while lying in bed. I could go on and on about how much we loved staying here! Highly recommended for a fun, relaxing, beautiful time.

The Perfect Alternative Joshua Tree Experience.

  • 5 of 5

We had been looking forward to our second visit to Miriam's place bordering Joshua Tree National Park for some time. Only as the date approached, however, did we realize that a potential government shutdown threatened to close the park during our scheduled stay. We hike a lot, and when we asked Miriam for advice, she came up with a week's worth of fascinating alternative routes that originated either at her back door or public access areas nearby. It was great to just leave her place in the morning, ignore our rental car, and simply walk into the park on a system of trails that are not well-marked, but are easily located and followed. Best of all, we had these trails all to ourselves - didn't see a single soul despite the fact that the Park was open and busy, with all the major marked trailheads and camping areas fully booked.

Each day, we returned to Miriam's place on foot, ready to enjoy an afternoon of relaxing and grilling dinner. This is easy to do, since Miriam makes sure her place invites you to feel very much at home. She has made a number of improvements since our last visit two years ago, including sturdy sun awnings over the outdoor dining table and sitting areas, further landscaping, some great hammocky swinging chairs for reading, and some appreciated details in the cabin itself.

As much as we like the cabin, we try to spend as much time outside of it as temperature allows since there is so much going on. This year seems to be the year of the rabbit - there are dozens of them in every size and age group. They are by no means tame, but have no problem wandering under the chair you're occupying if you don't spook them. The only time they weren't around, we learned to keep our eyes peeled for several healthy, sleek, and well-fed coyotes that would cruise by from time to time. And then there is the large flock of quail that visit each morning and afternoon, especially if you have scattered some of Miriam's bird seed supply in advance.

We had some chilly nights, but the propane heater is intuitive and efficient. We cooked and ate every meal but one "at home" and found every spice and condiment we could want. We will be back. The pristine air, night sky, and deep silence would be enough, but how many places inspire you to actually tiptoe into the kitchen each morning to see what critters might be visiting the pond or the desert beyond? It's a real treat.

Experience nature in the high desert

  • 5 of 5

We visited Joshua Tree to experience the real desert and to hike in Joshua Tree National Park . Miriam's cabin was the perfect choice for this. It is located close to the Park entrance, and at the same time not within sound or really sight of any neighbours. Peaceful and quiet, we were able to listen to the birds and watch the parade of bunnies , jack rabbits and quails pass the cabin , as well as the occasional coyote. The cabin is well designed and decorated, has beautiful outlooks in all directions, and had all the amenities required for our stay. Morning coffee enjoyed facing the sun rise , hikes in the park, lounge in the comfortable swinging chairs overlooking the valley at day end, good selection of tunes and videos for after dinner. The kitchen is well equipped and we also enjoyed take-out from the local Thai restaurant for a change of pace. Highly recommended.

Private desert hideaway with wildlife and trails

  • 5 of 5

We stayed the month of November in Think Tank. The house is an amazing piece of intelligent and beautiful design: solar energy, modern and casual colorful decor including a cook’s kitchen with high-end cookware and gas stove. The property abuts the Mojave Desert Land Trust and then JTNP. There is abundant hiking and wildlife right out the cabin door. We saw coyotes, rabbits, jackrabbits, quail, roadrunners and a great horned owl pass through the property. Secluded yet convenient location: west entrance to JTNP, town of JT Hwy 62: farmer’s market, JTNP Visitor’s Center, and landmark JT Saloon. The owner is wonderful to work with. I have stayed in several great rentals in JT and 29 Palms - this one ranks the highest.
