Overview

About the property

Cottage, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath (Sleeps 5)

Welcome to the Miner Cottage, a restored 1892 miner's cottage located just two blocks from historic downtown Idaho Springs.

The Miner Cottage features all the comforts of home, including electricity, running water and indoor plumbing. In other words, it's been updated, but not too updated.

The living room has two leather couches, a large leather hassock, and the famous reclining fish chair, all perfect for your doggie to stretch out on for a nice nap. Did we mention it's dog-friendly? There's also a wood-burning stove to keep you warm and toasty on those cold mountain nights.

The main bedroom is right off the living room and features a queen size bed with pillow-top mattress cover. The second bedroom, located off the kitchen, has a unique bunk bed, with a full-size bed on the bottom and a twin bed on top.

Don't feel like sampling the wares at any of Idaho Springs' fine eateries? You're in luck, because the modern updated kitchen has a stove, refrigerator, microwave, toaster, coffee maker and a full set of pots, pans, dishes and silverware. There's also a gas grill in the backyard.

The bathroom is indoors (none of that corncob nonsense on this vacation!), with a full-size washer/dryer, toilet, full bath/shower, soap, towels, hair dryer and assorted toiletries. It's also been updated with a new sink and toilet, and we lowered the floor eight inches back to its original height.

For your entertaining pleasure, the cottage has a 42-inch flat screen HDTV, cable, Wi-Fi, DVD player, games, books and movies. There's also a fenced back area with a deck and patio set.

The Miner Cottage is SMOKE-FREE, but also DOG FRIENDLY. Best of all, it's AFFORDABLE, with rates starting at just $105/night, with a $75 cleaning fee and $200 refundable deposit. However, if you smoke anything in the house (tobacco or marijuana), you WILL lose your deposit.

About Larry Hinkle

We both grew up in the midwest (Ohio and Indiana), but always knew we wanted to live in the mountains. After nine years in Colorado Springs, we moved to Denver, and a few months later bough the Miner Cottage. (We live in Omaha now, but it's only eight hours away, so we're still up here quite a bit.) We're huge dog lovers, and we always had a hard time finding places we could take our dogs on vacation with us. That's why we tried to make our vacation home as dog-friendly as possible, with furniture they can play on and a little back area that's great for them to poop on.

Larry Hinkle purchased this cottage in 2011

Why Larry Hinkle chose Idaho Springs

We love Colorado, and we love the outdoors, but we all also love the trappings of civilization. You get both at the Miner Cottage: you're right in town, but you're also only a couple minutes away from the Great Outdoors. Being a couple blocks walk from a yummy brewpub is also a huge plus. The chance to bring a 120-year-old house back to life was an interesting challenge as well.

What makes this cottage unique

You can't beat the location. Two-blocks from historic downtown Idaho Springs, and a couple minutes from I-70, means you're close to everything. And it's dog-friendly, which makes every vacation more fun.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I could not have imagined on first reserving the Miner Cottage how much we would enjoy our stay here. What a beautiful home and much-needed escape for us (and the pups) this turned out to be. Can you ask for more than fresh snow, a growler from Tommyknockers, a warm fire and Scrabble? Thank you so much and we hope to visit again soon!

Fantastic place to stay

  • 5 of 5

After staying at various motels in Idaho Springs decided to try a rental property. So very glad we did, absolutely lovely cabin and very comfortable. The guys were amazed at how well the cottage was kept and stocked. Larry and Vanessa were very quick in answering any questions. Especially gracious since one guest-who will remain unnamed--left a pair of pants at the cabin. Larry let us know and asked for the address to return them to him.

Although I personally did not go along on this trip, I received many brownie points for booking the Miner's Cottage. Better believe I am going on the next trip and booking the Miner's Cottage!!!

I personally want to thank the Hinkle's for offering their property to other's to enjoy the beauty surrounding Idaho Springs.

Wonderful cozy cabin!

  • 5 of 5

We were in Idaho Springs for a wedding and after extensive online research, decided to book the Miner’s Cabin. I think we have all had the experience of booking a place: that ended up being nothing like what was described. But in this case: we were very happy to find that the photos and.descriptions - and reviews from previous guests - were exactly aligned to what we found when we arrived. The cabin was very comfortably furnished with housewares and kitchenwares and the kitchen was very well stocked with basic food items - things that were nice to have but that you wouldn’t necessarily want to purchase for a short stay. With one trip to Safeway, we could add fresh essentials like fruit, vegetables, eggs, and milk - and we were set.

The cabin was in the perfect location: just a couple of blocks from Main Street. And although it was fairly close to I70, it was extremely quiet with no night-time road noise at all.

Larry provided helpful and detailed information prior to our arrival. He also responded very promptly and was a gracious host. We had some technical difficulties with the TV and he responded very quickly with suggestions. There was also a notebook there that provided information on local restaurants and tourist attractions.

For the price, I think you would be hard-pressed to find a better deal for the money.

Thank you, Larry, for a wonderful stay!

A well appointed cottage, it was clean, functional and inviting.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Miners Cottage in Idaho Springs as a home base for hiking Grays and Torreys. The cabin was very clean, comfortable and had everything we needed for 3 adults and a dog. We liked that it was within walking distance of restaurants and shopping.

I would highly recommend this cottage if you are looking for a place to stay in Idaho Springs.

Even though the weather was cold and rainy, our family had a great time in Idaho Springs. The cabin is so cozy! We reallly enjoyed the shops and restaurants just down the street!

Everything we needed; right in town

  • 5 of 5

Members of our family have been staying here for years, and this was our first visit after hearing great things. Larry is great at communication, accommodating, and very welcoming. Our critters loved their stay -- and so did we ... especially the bright, sunny, well-equipped kitchen, where we spent many happy hours. Thanks for everything!

Location

Car: necessary

You're right in the heart of Clear Creek County, so you're close to tons of great fun for the entire family. Skiing, snowboarding, whitewater rafting, kayaking, hiking, mountain biking, shopping, history, scenic drives, wildlife viewing, great restaurants, a phenomenal local microbrewery, fishing (ponds and creeks), a glacier, a gold mine, and pretty much the best of everything Colorado has to offer. Idaho Springs now has a few dispensaries. However, the Miner Cottage is a NON-SMOKING facility.
