About the property

Enjoy a getaway on the peaceful, quiet River House on the Mississippi River. In the mornings the only sounds you might hear are the sounds of the birds. In the summer you will watch barges and riverboats go by, or watch the flock of white pelicans on the River. In the wintertime eagles are on the ice in front of the house. On this part of the river, Pool 13, there are many inlets for boating and kayaking. The area is known for its fishing tournaments. There is a public boat launch 1 mile up the road, and there is a local place to rent boats. The River House has a dock for boating or fishing. The wildlife and spectacular sunsets offer many outstanding photographic opportunities. The Thomson area is on the Northern Illinois Wine Trail, and it features many wineries with tasting rooms. There are many antique shops and quilting shops nearby. You can also enjoy the local orchards and live summer theater. Nearby are the Palisades State Park, the Ingersol Nature Center, the Thomson Causeway, and Eagle Point Park. Thomson is on the Illinois Bike Trail, and bikes can be rented in town.

The River House is a one story ranch house, and it sleeps 6 with 4 beds. The house has 2 bedrooms, plus an entryway room with a queen size hide-a-bed. The master bedroom has a queen bed, and the second bedroom has two twin beds. An inflatable twin bed is also available. There are 2 full bathrooms. The house has a complete kitchen, central air, a washer and dryer., and internet and cable. In the winter a gas fireplace is available. Outside there is an eating area on the wrap-around deck and a fire pit in the back yard for campfires. A gas barbecue grill is also available.

The River House is 2 1/2 hours from Chicago and Madison, Wisconsin, and 1 hour from Dubuque, IA and the wonderful National Mississippi River Museum. It is a 45 minute drive to Galena for sightseeing, shopping, and good restaurants. In Galena, Cascade Mountain offers downhill skiing and snowboarding. It is also a 45 minute drive to the Quad Cities, a large metropolitan area that features wonderful museums, including the Putnam, the Figge Art Museum, and John Deere.

This is a quiet residential area. Whether you want to relax watching the sunset with friends, or whether you want to go sightseeing in Galena, our house will meet your needs. We live next door and will be available to answer any questions and make sure your visit is a very pleasant one. This is

About Nana Campana

My husband and I used the River House as our weekend getaway, before we moved here from the Chicago suburbs. We are both from the Midwest (Wisconsin and Illinois). I am a retired teacher, and my husband is a retired sheet metal worker. We lived in the River House full time while we were building our house next door. This area is really beautiful, and we enjoy boating, the sunsets, and the quiet, although we do head into Chicago frequently to enjoy theater and other city things. My favorite time here is in the fall and winter, when it is extra beautiful on the River. People are friendly here, and the neighbors will welcome you.

Why Nana Campana chose Thomson

The River House is a great getaway. It is only 2 1/2 hours from Chicago, which is very convenient. It is a quiet, relaxing place in the woods on the Mississippi River with a spectacular view. Since the house has a wrap-around deck overlooking the river, you can eat outside and enjoy the fresh air and the view. The house is on one floor, and there are few steps to worry about.

What makes this house unique

Since the house is on a wooded cul-de-sac, the area is very peaceful and quiet. Yet nearby there are many wineries, quilting shops, and antique shops to enjoy. Boating on the river is wonderful.

Comfortable retreat by the Mississippi

  • 5 of 5

Girlfriend gathering at the River House was great fun! Beds are very comfortable including the fold-out couch. Clean with lovely décor.

Ron and Nana were gracious hosts with a big selection of movies and games to choose from. Wi-Fi was recently added which helped those of us with poor cell phone signal connect. Big deck with view of Mississippi River. We would rent again.

Nice Place to Stay

  • 5 of 5

We arrived at the property and made ourselves at home. The River House is a modular home that appears to have been well taken care of. We found everything we needed.

There were only a couple of things that I might mention. The coffee maker needs to be replaced. Every pot we made was full of grounds. Maybe our fault?

The outside appearance (decks, outside furniture, etc) needs attention. The outside furniture hasn't been cleaned in a long time. The front and rear decks need some paint or sealer, but that didn't affect their use.

The River House is actually right on the Mississippi River, but during our stay we couldn't really see much because of the trees.

We didn't get to meet Nana or Ron as they were out and about. Although, Nana let us know the home was ready for us, and she did check on us by phone on our departure day.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay and feel we received our money's worth in the rental of the property.

The house was clean, cozy and spacious. It had everything you would need for barbecue or bonfire. There was no wifi but everything else was perfect.

Owner's Response: The River House is a place to gather, connect, refresh, and relax. One of our guiding principles is: "Never go too long without watching a sunset." Atticus
