Overview

About the property

3.5 Bedroom 2.5 Baths sleeps 8. Set in woods with Denali and aurora views.

Whether traveling to Fairbanks under the summer's midnight sun or winter's aurora borealis - you will find this peaceful setting a perfect base for your interior Alaskan vacation.

This 3,000sqft natural log home was built almost entirely from the white spruce trees that grew on the property. The original owner cut, hand peeled, and allowed the logs to dry. He then contracted a premier log home builder to hand scribe each log to fit into place in 1990. The log detail is a thing of beauty. It has that rustic, homey feeling that only log homes can give.

This premium log home offers views of the Alaska Range and Denali from the inside loft or while relaxing on the grand outdoor deck while grilling your favorite Alaskan seafood. During dark, clear nights enjoy star gazing and the excitement of the aurora borealis unobstructed by city lights from either inside or outside this well-appointed, truly Alaskan home.

The large upstairs loft bedroom sleeps four in one queen size bed and a pair of twin beds. Please note the set of twin beds are accessed over a low log wall using three stairs on each side of log wall. This gives some privacy from each of these adjoining sleeping spaces in the loft. This is a popular place to sleep and brings out the child in all my guests.

The pair of downstairs bedrooms in the walk out basement, each have queen size beds. All the bedrooms have views and are accessed via stairwells. There are bathrooms conveniently located on all three levels. The laundry and shower are located on the ground floor.

There is a spacious eat-in kitchen and also a huge dining area that seats large groups comfortably. The kitchen is well-stocked with dishes, cooking utensils, spices, and other essentials.

The sitting area near the fire is the most popular place to read, while the family room has a 60" curved television available for your viewing pleasure.

The keyless entry makes access convenient and there is no worry over lost keys or time of arrival.

Off street parking is plentiful and has headbolts for winter guests to plug in their vehicles when the weather drops to subzero temperatures.

I believe the peace and tranquility that guests enjoy while staying at this vacation rental comes from the "groundedness" of the home being built from truly local logs. It can't get more organic than that!

About Kathy Alonzo

I arrived in Alaska in 1975. I have lived in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Delta Junction, Petersburg, Arctic Circle Hot Springs Resort, and North Pole. Construction work took me around the state, but I found Fairbanks to be just the right size town for me. The people here are amazing! I have worked as an iron worker, retailer, cashier, florist, receptionist, teacher, and business owner. My talented children all live here in Fairbanks and I am now a proud grandmother.

This is one of three properties I rent as vacation rentals. I also own and manage Lead Dog Cabin #789637 or Raven's Rest on 5th Avenue #928995.

Kathy Alonzo purchased this house in 2005

Why Kathy Alonzo chose Fairbanks

I bought this gorgeous natural log home property to fulfill a life-long dream of owning a bed and breakfast. After ten years of operating the B&B, I noted the need for family vacation rentals in this area and am moving in that direction.

The cabin was absolutely beautiful and the host was very sweet.

  • 5 of 5

This cabin was amazing. It was well kept and very clean. I foubd no problems and bo complaints about this place or the host. Both are wonderful. There was even an entire cabinet full of cards and games to play in case you did not want to leave the cabin. There was plenty of qood to burn in the fire place (very neat fire place). I have nothing but good things to say about this place. I would recommend it to anyone and be sure to invite the host over for a while. She is very sweet and fun.

Owner's Response: The wood stove/fireplace got a lot of use this winter! It provides such a cozy atmosphere when it is snowing and cold outside. There are cards, games, puzzles, and books to enjoy. My library is primarily Alaska books upstairs for guest to enjoy, but there is also a bookcase with plenty of paperbacks where you can exchange or take a book for your flight home. I have a smart tv but I also have a DVD player with some great movies to browse through. There are a couple of movies to inform you of the sights around Fairbanks, and another that tells you about the aurora.

Spacious but cozy; comfortable and charming

  • 5 of 5

My husband, son, and daughter-in-law just finished a week-long stay at Moose in the Garden. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. There really were moose! A cow and her twins spent an entire day right next to the house! The next day we saw them again a little way down the road. Our final day we saw footprints and droppings from a solitary moose who must have visited early morning. We were thrilled. One night we saw the aurora but most of the nights were cloudy and snowy, but we loved that, too. The driveway was always kept clear so we had no trouble getting in or out, but the roads in the area had a thick coating of ice under thin layers of snow. I strongly recommend renting a car with 4wd, awd or snow tires. We were fine with a Jeep Grand Cherokee and slow driving.

The cabin is well stocked with staples - probably left by previous renters. We added our own left-overs to the supplies. The kitchen has every tool we needed and tons of pots, pans, plates, glasses, etc. The cabin, bathrooms, and kitchen were clean throughout, well-stocked with towels, cloth napkins and placemats. Bringing your own towels is not needed. There was liquid soap at all sinks and at the tub, but if you like bar soap, I recommend you bring your own. There was a great washer and dryer and detergent was provided. There is a sauna but we couldn't figure out how to turn it on, but it wasn't important enough for anyone to inquire with Kathy on how to so we never used it.

On all floor levels there was generous seating for everyone to have a cozy place to relax and curl up with a book, kindle, or laptop. We took advantage of the games and puzzles that were available. The wifi worked great and allowed for streaming of HD movies on the UHD tv.

I highly recommend this cabin if you are looking for a getaway that is not too far away from services. The Fred Meyers is maybe about 25 minutes away and has everything.

As for places to eat - we recommend breakfast at the Cookie Jar, a meal at Fushimi's and coffee and snacks at Venue. All great! and don't forget to visit the Thompson Visitor Center.

And a special thank you to Kathy, the owner, who was very quick to respond to any inquiries.

Owner's Response: It was so exciting to have the moose cow and two calves hang out so long around the house while you were there! Thank you for sharing your videos. I will have to get them posted! They are currently on my fb page. There are small courtesy bars of soap available. They are usually left out for guests and are also stored in the medicine cabinets in each of the bathing areas. I apologize that the housekeeper did not restock them for your stay. I hope that you will find your way back to Fairbanks to experience the midnight sun. Thank you for your wonderful review.

An enchanting cabin in a perfect location!

  • 5 of 5

we were two couples who went up to Fairbanks to see the northern lights. Cabin was perfectly located outside of the city and we saw the lights. They were spectacular. We were warm, comfortable, had everything we needed, and completely enjoyed this cabin. Downstairs there were two bedrooms which were dark and great for sleeping in winter. We enjoyed the Olympics on a big screen television. The kitchen was very well equipped. We were able to snowshoe from thr house. The upstairs bedroom was the master with a bathroom open to it and a large Jacuzzi tub. There was also a sleeping area off the master which would be great for kids. Unfortunately we did not use the sauna but I’m sure it would’ve been great. The wood burning stove kept us warm and comfortable in minus degrees temperatures. The owner was very responsive to everything we needed and the whole experience was superior. I highly recommend this cabin for your Alaskan experience.
