NO PETS! NO SMOKING! Thanks.

Calzada Tecolote ('La Ruta de la Independencia' down which Miguel Hidalgo rode in 1810) is a car-free 'callejon' (alley) four minutes walk from Jardin Union, the unofficial city center.

Our house (two-minute walk up the callejon from where taxi drops you off) is adobe, dating back to perhaps 1850. We spent three years renovating after buying it in 2005.

GROUND FLOOR: Three rooms plus a bathroom with shower and washing machine. Two bedrooms (back and front) with the option of a third using a fold-down sofa in the middle room. Front room doubles as a yoga studio. Please note: door between front room and middle room, curtain between middle room and back room (master guest bedroom). Guests in back bedroom go through middle room to access.

MIDDLE FLOOR: Kitchen, sala (living room) with fold-down sofa-bed, patio (with fountain and plants), storage room (with small library of English & Spanish books), small bathroom with shower, tiny workshop.

TOP FLOOR (azotea): One room which we use as the master bedroom, office and view-sala, with terraces on both sides, each with a unique view.

ROOF of the top floor room is accessible via a narrow stairway, for 360-degree city views. (Use at your own risk--no handrail!)

Manager (bilingual) on-call, fiber-optic wifi, local phone, electricity, city water and gas included. (But not bottled water.) Weekly cleaning service included.

Our home is a trifle 'rustico'--not everything matches, you're under open skies going from floor to floor--but everything's clean, everything works, it's cozy, spacious and cheerful. We love sharing our home, but it is just that: a home, not a 5-star hotel!

Our location is pretty amazing. You can walk down and be in the very center of town in less than five minutes on pedestrian-only streets. But if you walk UP Calzada Tecolote, in 15 minutes you can be at the start of everyone's favorite hike: La Bufa/Los Picachos. This is an outstanding volcanic formation, from which you get a fabulous view of the city. Takes another 45 minutes to reach the cross on top if you're fit.

10 FUN THINGS TO DO WHILE STAYING AT TECOLOTE 39

About Barry Evans

Barry's a Brit, Louisa's from the U.S. (growing up around the world). We divide our time between our home in Eureka, California (on the northern coast), Mexico and Europe. We love our Mexican life and enjoy our local friends, Spanish language, and savoring the culture here. Barry's a science writer and meditation facilitator; Louisa is a management trainer and business coach.

Barry Evans purchased this house in 2005

Why Barry Evans chose Zona Centro

After three weeks of house-searching, Louisa found our home almost exactly across the street from where she was staying -- and couldn't believe her luck. We're on a quiet street yet right in town, minutes away from shopping, markets, and entertainment. We walk everywhere (no need for a car). Within 15 minutes we are in the hills above town, exploring and hiking.

What makes this house unique

House works as a family home or as an apartment if you're only one or two people. Intimate yet expansive. Multiple views, pedestrian street, close to city center. Can be warm and cozy if it's chilly outside, but also has cool areas when it's hot. The ground floor is self-contained, with a fridge and two-burner range. We spend a lot of time in our plant-filled patio with the sound of the fountain.

Guestbook comments from the manager

What a delight to stay in the heart of Guanajuato at El Tecolote.

This is a charming, colorful and vintage Mexican 3 story home complete with everything you need. Included are gorgeous vistas of the entire city for great photography,a fantastic library from the arts to sciences. There are well placed gardens to read and lounge in, and a wonderful kitchen/dining room overlooking beautiful domed churches which I painted daily from so many angles.

Within a five minute walk we were at really good and reasonable restaurants, our favorite coffee at Cafe Tal, excellent classical music concerts, beautiful local stores, excellent museums- like the Don Quiote, and the architecturally wonderful university.

You feel at home here. It is a place you do not want to leave, especially the third floor bedroom way up in the stars.

Fantastic location!

  • 5 of 5

This colonial mansion is fantastic! They have kept many of the original colonial features; which is what I love about it. It is spacious, clean, and gives you a little insight into what a "real" Mexican house was like. The view from the giant kitchen window is amazing. It is the best value in Guanajuato for the price, location, space, and authenticity. We will definitely stay there again next year.

Best view and location in, and reasonable

  • 5 of 5

Location is key when visiting Guanajuato. This house is just minutes from el centro, and close to many restaurants, historical sites, and museums. While not luxury accommodations, it is very clean and comfortable. It is perfect for two couples, and there's one other comfortable single bed. We stayed the entire month of January, and even on cooler days the house was comfortable. I think it would stay cool in the summer with the thick walls. Other friends rented a luxury house in Marfil for more than twice the price, and had to taxi into town every day. Unless you are right in the historical center of Guanajuato, like at this house, you may be disappointed. Even rentals on the panoramica are too far out, or should I say up. Location is everything in Guanajuato. We will stay there on our next trip.

Stayed a month, and didn't want to leave!

  • 5 of 5

First of all, Barry was very prompt about communicating with us when we inquired about the property, and his manager, Mario, was most helpful on several occasions (before and during our stay). The detailed information provided ahead of our stay (and in the binder in the house), as well as the labels on various items in the house were all very helpful.

As for the house itself, we absolutely loved staying there. As background, this was our fourth stay in Guanajuato since 2015. For our first two visits, we stayed in a hotel and for our third visit (six weeks this spring) we stayed in a different nearby home. Barry and Louisa's home will be our first choice for future visits, if it is available.

Importantly, given the wealth of things to see and do in Guanajuato, Barry and Louisa's home is perfectly located. We walked or took buses everywhere we needed or wanted to go. And, on top of that, it's a comfortable, inviting home with fabulous views. The kitchen/dining room quickly became our favorite area, and we spent many hours at the table there (I was taking Spanish classes and my husband was writing), soaking in the stunning view overlooking Templo San Francisco. We realize that Mexico isn't for everyone, nor is Guanajuato, nor is Barry and Louisa's home, but for us--it was a perfect fit. THANK YOU for sharing your wonderful home!

BEAUTIFUL CASA, GREAT LOCATION

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from 3 glorious weeks at Barry & Louisa's lovely home in Guanajuato. The location is pretty much ideal: we walked about 2 minutes to outstanding coffee, gelato and falafel. A walk of five-ten minutes brought us to excellent restaurants and museums of all kinds. We had a choice of two Spanish schools for our kids (6, 12, and 15) and us, again within 5-10 minutes. The house has stunning views from the second and third floors, plenty of room for a family of five, and a nice place to work out on the first floor. Barry was great at answering my questions before we got there, and Mario took over as my go-to for almost anything once we arrived. Highly recommend!

Colorful, comfortable, and pleasant stay

  • 4 of 5

We spent two weeks in Guanajuato and just loved the house. The views from the top-floor bedroom were breathtaking; the midlevel was comfortable and cozy; the bottom floor was just perfect for exercise and play with our 7-year-old. The location is excellent--close to the charming Cafe Santo, great coffee at Cafe Tal, gorditas and juices in Baratillo Plaza, and the wonderful Los Campos. Close enough to the Jardin but far enough away that the callejonadas didn't keep us up all night. We'd come back in a heartbeat.
