This is your chance to experience a bit of history when you stay in one of two beautifully furnished apartments above the Gerhart Building. This building dates back to 1891 and 1905. The oldest portion of the building first served as a tavern and the 1905 section of the building was built to be a hardware store known for many years as Gerhart's Hardware. The street-level portion of the building currently houses '"Hello Dolly"', a delightful gift and apparel shop, and 'Shannon's Yoga and Fitness', a great place to drop in and catch a work-out while vacationing.
After you enter the unassuming door on the street level of 2nd Street and climb a short flight of stairs, you will be pleasantly surprised to find two of the loveliest vintage apartments in all of downtown Algoma! They are bright and sunny with floor to ceiling windows in the living rooms and cozy bedrooms, with fully appointed kitchens. Apartment A has three bedrooms (one queen, one full, and two twins) and one bath and an extra sink and vanity in the hall. There is a large front living area that also has a pull-out couch and a gorgeous '4 seasons' room with knotty pine ceilings and windows around the whole room that offer a panoramic view of the winery, lake, and marina. There is a small outdoor roof deck that makes a great place to grill a meal or enjoy coffee or cocktail. This apartment has 4 small TV's that are either DVD or VHS ready and there is an extensive DVD and VHS collection with 100's of movies to choose from. Free WiFi is also available. The full-sized kitchen is completely stocked with everything you would need to create a beautiful meal, but you may prefer any of the many fine dining establishments that are less than a block away. There is a washer and dryer available for use also.
When you walk into Apartment B, the floor-to-ceiling windows, hardwood floors, and graceful arches in the living dining room will take your breath away. This lovely apartment has two bedrooms (one with a queen and one with two twins) and one bathroom. The kitchen is huge and cheery - a great place to cook a good old fashioned breakfast to enjoy at the antique dining table. Again, there is free WiFi and access to a multitude of movies.
This would be a perfect place to host a 'girlfriend trip' or a romantic get-away. And don't forget about the Von Stiehl Winery directly across the street. They have a wonderful tour and they host several events throughout the year. The yoga/pilates studio downstairs welcomes drop-ins. What could be more fun than to try a zumba class with your girlfriends and then cool off with a glass of wine!
Hi, my name is Beth and I grew up in the midwest. My family lived in Steven's Point, Wisconsin for several years before moving to Michigan and finally to Texas in 1976. I currently live in Denton, TX but I try to 'escape' to Wisconsin every summer when the heat gets too extreme down here.
Beth Klein purchased this apartment in 2007
I purchased this property for several reasons. First, I love Algoma! What a great wholesome place to spend a summer! It has everything one could ask for in a small town - the lake, the beautiful outdoors, biking and hiking trails, art ('Clay on Steele'), great restaurants and bars, bowling, a good library, shopping (The Ivy Cottage and the very eclectic 'Flying Pig'), and GREAT FRIENDLY FOLKS! I have been taking my kids here every summer since they were babies and we have made so many wonderful memories (searching for beach glass and pretty rocks, swimming at Krohns lake, picnicking at all the many area parks, kayaking, and bicycling the Ahnapee Trail).
But I fell in love with this particular building for two reasons. I always wanted to live in an upstairs apartment in a historical building, and I am an artist, so I loved the huge garage that I plan on turning into a studio when I retire in Texas.
Since I live 5 states away, I liked the fact that there was no yard to upkeep and that I had downstairs tenants that could help me keep an eye on things when I wasn't there. So far, it has worked wonderfully and I try to get up here every chance I get. This place and this town provide me with a peaceful escape from the hectic pace and lifestyle that comes with living in the Dallas area.
I purchased this property from the family of the original owners. They lived in this building for 3 generations and I think that's pretty neat that they have entrusted me with a piece of history that has been in their family since 1891. Therefore, with the exception of WiFi, I have not installed flat-screen TV's with nine million channels in every room. To me, this is a place to focus on yourself and the people and life you love. I've tried to furnish the apartments with beautiful artwork, and comfortable furniture and antiques. It is a place to rejuvenate your senses and get back in touch with nature and simplicity. If you want a modern-day hotel, then I urge you to look elsewhere, but if you want a beautiful comfortable home where you can read, rest, play games, tell stories, and relax then this is the place for you.
Cozy place. Beds comfortable. Place clean. Great bonus got to park in the garage.
We enjoyed our 3rd year in a row at this charming apartment in the scenic little town of Algoma. We will be back next year!
The building is exactly as described. Well kept, clean and cozy. Dealing with Beth on getting details figured out was a breeze. So much within walking distance of the apartment and a short drive from Door County.
We stayed in apartment A and it was huge! Our favorite room was the big, sunny family room. And Algoma is such a great little town. You don't hear much about it, but good food, the pier and some cool little shops all within a couple blocks of the apartment. Will be recommending this spot!
Best place to stay if you visiting Algoma. Lot of nice places brewery, winery, restaurants, bakery near by. The place was amazing. Such well maintained apartment, clean linens with full kitchen. We had great experience saying here. Spent time playing all board games, watching TV, cooking. It even has washer / dryer. I am glad we stayed here. The owner Beth is wonderful and very responsive both before and during our stay here. I highly recommend this place if you visiting Algoma. Don't miss this beautiful apartment.
This apartment was very homey. Very clean, well equipped and spacious. The location was in walking distance to all the places needed to visit. Had a great relaxing time and would come back in the future. The communication with the owner was also great. Thank you Beth. Bud and Kathy
These beautifully furnished upper apartments are located directly across from the Von Stiehl Winery on one side and the local bowling alley on the other. Downstairs there is a Pilates/Yoga studio and a wonderful gift shop called 'Hello Dolly"'. A short walk will take you to the Marina or to historic Steele Street where you can wander through great shops and restaurants. The apartments are 1/2 mile from sandy Crescent Beach and Boardwalk. Some of the area attractions include golfing, the Ahnapee Trail, canoeing and kayaking, The Flying Pig, pier fishing, marina, shopping, and snowmobiling an ice fishing in the winter. Lambeau Field is only 40 miles away and Door County is 17 miles away.
