" We loved coming here at the end of the day as your ‘Nest’ and Petty Harbour seem to hold the very best of all we took in."

Guests: Elise and Ted, Medicine Hat, Alberta

Dates of stay: June 29–July 5, 2017

Thanks for providing the perfect ‘Nest’ for our first time to Newfoundland. We loved every moment of our touring all the beautiful coves and harbours. We loved coming here at the end of the day as your ‘Nest’ and Petty Harbour seem to hold the very best of all we took in. We were blessed with great people, great views, large and small icebergs, whales, puffins, and great food–and nice photos and remembrances to take home. We appreciate the great outfitting of this perfect ‘Nest’ and all the good information along the way. Praying God’s best to you in your adventures. In Jesus’ love, Elise and Ted.

"I would never hesitate to recommend this whole experience to anyone."

Guests: Frank Canova, Dominion Cape Breton, and Maria and Justin Arsenault, Moncton, New Brunswick

Dates of stay: June 23–26, 2017

Awesome–is the only word to describe our visit–the owners, Karen and David–awesome–friendly, warm, welcoming, lovely people. The place itself–awesome. Clean, well equipped, beautiful. I would never hesitate to recommend this whole experience to anyone.

"So glad we booked a whole week."

Guests: Liz & John, Kingston, Ontario

Dates of stay: June 19–25, 2017

We love this place–the view is spectacular, the Nest is so comfortable and well-equipped. We really enjoyed our hikes and other outings, and coming back here to cook and enjoy the view was a real treat. So glad we booked a whole week. We appreciated your great directions to the Nests plus all the other details–tea, coffee, spices. We too read Alan Doyle’s book– well, John read it and relayed many of the tales to me as we sat on the deck looking out to sea. Great fun! Thanks for everything.

"We’ll definitely remember this vacation!"

Guests: Paul & Cheryl, Vancouver, British Columbia

Dates of stay: June 8–22, 2017

Our 2 week stay went by so quickly, and we were so very happy to have such a wonderful home base. Thanks for arranging the sunshine, icebergs, whales, and crazy windstorms! We’ll definitely remember this vacation!

“…a million times better than a hotel room…”

Guests: Karin & Ed, London, Ontario

Dates of stay: June 10–12, 2017

ShoreLark by the Sea is a million times better than a hotel room–there is no way that we could have felt this comfortable, even at the best of hotels. We were so lucky to have found this place and Petty Harbour. We’ve seen some truly amazing views and walked some incredible trails, but one of my favourite memories will be reading Alan Doyle’s book about growing up in Petty Harbour *, aloud to my husband as we sipped a glass of wine and looked out our window at the harbour itself. Priceless!

“We loved watching the boats from the deck, and the beautiful sunsets.”

Guests: Karen & Erin, Cobourg, Ontario

Dates of stay: June 4–7, 2017

From the moment we walked into your Upper Nest, we felt like we were home! You have really thought of everything. We loved watching the boats from the deck, and the beautiful sunsets. Its’ central location to St. John’s and to the south (Bay Bulls, Ferryland) is ideal. We always looked forward to coming home from a day of adventure to our beautiful ’Nest’! Thanks for everything.

“…loved simply waking up each day to this spectacular view of the harbour and the sea…”

Guest: Margaret, Deux-Montagnes, Québec

Dates of stay: May 26–31, 2017

Thank you so much for the wonderful stay in your cosy Upper Nest. You’ve truly thought of every detail to make it comfortable and relaxing. I loved simply waking up each day to this spectacular view of the harbour and the sea–Petty Harbour is so captivating.

Thank you for all the homey touches and interesting reading material. It was great curling up with the Newfoundland Quarterly ( a new discovery) and a hot cup of tea under the Republic of Newfoundland blanket–heaven!

Such a pleasure meeting you both–hopefully we’ll meet again. Thank you!

“The place is absolutely stunning with all the small personal touches that we didn’t know we needed…”

Guests: John and Nicole, Ottawa, Ontario

Date of stay: May 21, 2017

Karen and David: John & I spent a day and a half hiking from St. John’s to Petty Harbour with 50 lb. and 30 lb. packs respectively. Although the trip has been absolutely breath-taking, by the time we happened upon your gorgeous town we were more than ready for a hot meal, warm shower, and rest. After eating 4 big meals at Chafe’s Landing, I called Karen. Despite our request being impromptu you both arranged for us to stay. We can’t thank you enough! The place is absolutely stunning with all the small personal touches that we didn’t know we needed: laundry detergent, tea, instructions on everything–you’ve done an incredible job of making this rest stop our favourite and what we anticipate will be our best. Thank you for this unique and special experience!

Aside from sitting on your private deck and watching the whales play in the ocean (10,000 Humpbacks migrate through the area each year!) and the icebergs idle by (in season of course)... there is plenty to do in Petty Harbour itself!

Petty Harbour has been an active fishing village since the 1500s. Feel the quaintness of the village for yourself... just take the short stroll down to the harbour and be gob-smacked by the stunning vista.

For non-licensed fishers, the Newfoundland and Labrador Recreational Food Fishery happens twice a year during summer and fall. The recreational fishery is open to both residents and non-residents and there is no license requirement. If not partaking yourself, you can still watch as folks take to the waters in small boats and then come back to the wharf to clean their catch in the same way it's been done for hundred of years. Either way, it's sure to whet your appetite!

Speaking of which - Chafe's Landing, the local seafood restaurant, is waiting to serve you the same fresh-caught fish at lunch - and again at supper, if you wish - it's that good! They have just completed a lovely reno and now have a small "pub"and deck! There is something for everyone on Chafe's menu!

We also have a new coffee shop called The Watershed - located right on the wharf. Enjoy artisan coffee, sandwiches and pastries in this quaint waterside cafe!

Learn the local history at the Petty Harbour Heritage Museum, learn about Newfoundland aquatic life at the Petty Harbour Mini Aquarium, stop into the Information Centre, get a bit of exercise while enjoying the quiet splendor of the East Coast Trail or for the more adventurous...try Zip Lining (North Atlantic Zip Lining) through the hills and get a bird's eye view of the Atlantic Ocean. Fishing For Success is a Not for Profit Organization that can take you out beyond the breakwater to jig for your own cod, bring it back in clean it and even do a lovely piece of art with it! Fantastic fun for the whole family!

Canoers, kayakers and jet ski enthusiasts bring their crafts to the launches at the wharf and enjoy the Petty Harbour area also!

We are located on the East Coast Trail where there is plenty of hiking for all levels.

Or maybe you just want to while away the hours poking through craft shops, artist studios or picking wild blueberries in the hills outside your suite.

Petty Harbour also has its popular Arts & Heritage Festival in August.

We also have a brand new convenience store which will open at the beginning of the season. If you need a little more in the way of groceries, take the 5 minute drive to Bidgoods where you can pick up everything you need including a fabulous selection of Newfoundland specialty food items, Newfoundland crafts and more of the freshest of fish and seafood - including lobster!

For those needing a Pharmacy there is also a Shoppers Drug Mart in the Bidgoods Plaza.

Ventures Afar

Guests of Shore Lark by the Sea are able to experience an idyllic lifestyle in Petty Harbour yet can switch gears very quickly with a 15 minute drive into St. John's, one of the oldest most vibrant cities in North America, where they can hit the pubs, theatres, art galleries, museums, shopping, sports events and fine dining restaurants.

Petty Harbour is also located minutes from one of the biggest attractions to the province, Cape Spear, the most easterly point in North America, and is a launching point for many day trips including the Irish Loop, whale and bird watching boat tours, sea kayaking and much more.

If you head down to Ferryland you can check out the Colony of Avalon Archaeological Dig and have a lovely catered picnic lunch right on the cliffs at the Ferryland Lighthouse.

Bird lovers must take the trip to Cape St. Mary's Ecological Reserve! Witness one of the most accessible places in the world to see nesting seabirds including kittiwakes, cormorants, puffins and more than 24,000 gannets.

The Avalon Wilderness Area is home to the most southerly herd of Woodland caribou.

There are several golf courses nearby, including a championship public course with panoramic views of St. John's and the surrounding coastline.

Brook trout and Atlantic salmon are also abundant in the ponds and rivers of the region.

Other outdoor activities: Sea kayaking, boating, mountain biking, horseback riding, swimming and more are all available.

Newfoundland has so many incredible things to do and see...and we could go on forever... so instead we'll just give you a link to one of the best sites to get all the information you need!
