THANKS SO MUCH FOR CONSIDERING OUR "SHORELARKBYTHESEA" VACATION RENTALS!
David and I are both well acquainted with many areas of the world - but there is nowhere else we would rather live. The beauty is stunning and ever changing 365 days a year and we hope to share this little gem with you! We built our Shorelarkbythesea 1 and 2 bedroom vacation rental business in 2012 and are certified 4 star members of Canada Select. Read our six years of 5 star Guest Comment (verifiable) or have any questions visit our site.
Karen purchased this cottage in 2012

“Our second stay at Shorelark…”
Dates of stay: September 3–10, 2016
Thanks again Karen & David. Our second stay at Shorelark in Petty Harbour! Everything was wonderful!
We stayed in the Lower Nest and it was just perfect for us. It has everything that we needed for our vacation. We enjoyed our breakfast on the deck in the mornings as we watched activities in the harbour and then our beverage of choice on the deck again in the evenings after amazing hikes on the East Coast Trail, and trips around the area including a visit to Ferryland, La Manche Village and Cape Spear. Very convenient to St. John's. The staff and food at Chafe's Landing were a delight. Would recommend this property to anyone and have already.
A wonderful spot out of the city but near enough. A quiet, well equipped apartment with a great porch, view and owners. Easy access to St Johns but far enough to feel "remote". A short walk to a wonderful cafe and restaurant. Lots to do nearby, or by a short drive, and the locals are wonderful to engage with. Sitting at the cafe can occupy several hours a day or just sit on the porch and watch.
We loved coming here at the end of the day as your ‘Nest’ and Petty Harbour seem to hold the very best of all we took in. Thanks for providing the perfect ‘Nest’ for our first time to Newfoundland. We loved every moment of our touring all the beautiful coves and harbours. We loved coming here at the end of the day as your ‘Nest’ and Petty Harbour seem to hold the very best of all we took in. We were blessed with great people, great views, large and small icebergs, whales, puffins, and great food–and nice photos and remembrances to take home. We appreciate the great outfitting of this perfect ‘Nest’ and all the good information along the way. Praying God’s best to you in your adventures.
We stayed ar ShoreLark for a week- a lot of the time just sitting on the balcony overlooking the harbour, gazing out to sea. The apartment was very well equipped for cooking and it was comfortable and spacious. Karen and David were welcoming hosts and their directions to find ShoreLark were perfect. A copy of Alan Doyle's book was on the coffee table and we really enjoyed walking around the town, picking out the spots he talked about. 2 great hiking trails close by and a 15' drive into St John's.
My husband Josh and I have had the pleasure of staying at Shorelark on two separate occasions. One being in the lower nest and the next on the upper nest. Karen was such a great person to communicate with, helping with any questions we had and even giving us suggestions on what her and David's favourite places to dine are. Newfoundland was always on the top of my wish list of places to travel. Staying in Petty Harbour at the Shorelark really was like the icing on the cake. Waking up and sitting on the deck with a coffee in hand looking over the harbour and ocean was almost like a dream come true. We loved it so much, we came back 3 years later. During this time we enjoyed seeing my very first iceberg, saw a mother and baby seal in the next cove over, and watched whales in the harbour from the deck. Thanks for allowing us to stay in such a sweet little retreat in a gem of a location. We look forward to our next visit.
The best thing that we did to plan this visit to was contact the host and hostess directly by phone.
They gave us the feeling that we would be welcome.
What is seen on their web site worked well. We had to find it in the dark ,and we knew we were home because we recognized it from the photos. It is all there as they describe, nothing is needed for the visit .
We would go to this place again ,if the opportunity ever presents it self.
A quaint place ,only 20 minutes from down town St.Johns NFLD
Aside from sitting on your private deck and watching the whales play in the ocean (10,000 Humpbacks migrate through the area each year!) and the icebergs idle by (in season of course)... there is plenty to do in Petty Harbour itself!
Petty Harbour has been an active fishing village since the 1500s. Feel the quaintness of the village for yourself... just take the short stroll down to the harbour and be gob-smacked by the stunning vista.
For non-licensed fishers, the Newfoundland and Labrador Recreational Food Fishery happens twice a year during summer and fall. The recreational fishery is open to both residents and non-residents and there is no license requirement. If not partaking yourself, you can still watch as folks take to the waters in small boats and then come back to the wharf to clean their catch in the same way it's been done for hundred of years. Either way, it's sure to whet your appetite!
Speaking of which - Chafe's Landing, the local seafood restaurant, is waiting to serve you the same fresh-caught fish at lunch - and again at supper, if you wish - it's that good! They have just completed a lovely reno and now have a small "pub"and deck! There is something for everyone on Chafe's menu!
We also have a coffee shop called The Watershed - located right on the wharf. Enjoy artisan coffee, sandwiches and pastries in this quaint waterside cafe!
Learn the local history at the Petty Harbour Heritage Museum, learn about Newfoundland aquatic life at the Petty Harbour Mini Aquarium, stop into the Information Centre, get a bit of exercise while enjoying the quiet splendor of the East Coast Trail or for the more adventurous...try Zip Lining (North Atlantic Zip Lining) through the hills and get a bird's eye view of the Atlantic Ocean. Fishing For Success is a Not for Profit Organization that can take you out beyond the breakwater to jig for your own cod, bring it back in clean it and even do a lovely piece of art with it! Fantastic fun for the whole family!
Canoers, kayakers and jet ski enthusiasts bring their crafts to the launches at the wharf and enjoy the Petty Harbour area also!
We are located on the East Coast Trail where there is plenty of hiking for all levels.
Or maybe you just want to while away the hours poking through craft shops, artist studios or picking wild blueberries in the hills outside your suite.
If you need groceries, take the 5 minute drive to Bidgoods where you can pick up everything you need including a fabulous selection of Newfoundland specialty food items, lovely baked goods, Newfoundland crafts and more of the freshest of fish and seafood - including lobster!
For those needing a Pharmacy there is also a Shoppers Drug Mart in the Bidgoods Plaza.

Guests of Shore Lark by the Sea are able to experience an idyllic lifestyle in Petty Harbour yet can switch gears very quickly with a 15 minute drive into St. John's, one of the oldest most vibrant cities in North America, where they can hit the pubs, theatres, art galleries, museums, shopping, sports events and fine dining restaurants.
Petty Harbour is also located minutes from one of the biggest attractions to the province, Cape Spear, the most easterly point in North America, and is a launching point for many day trips including the Irish Loop, whale and bird watching boat tours, sea kayaking and much more.
If you head down to Ferryland you can check out the Colony of Avalon Archaeological Dig and have a lovely catered picnic lunch right on the cliffs at the Ferryland Lighthouse.
Bird lovers must take the trip to Cape St. Mary's Ecological Reserve! Witness one of the most accessible places in the world to see nesting seabirds including kittiwakes, cormorants, puffins and more than 24,000 gannets.
The Avalon Wilderness Area is home to the most southerly herd of Woodland caribou.
There are several golf courses nearby, including a championship public course with panoramic views of St. John's and the surrounding coastline.
Brook trout and Atlantic salmon are also abundant in the ponds and rivers of the region.
Other outdoor activities: Sea kayaking, boating, mountain biking, horseback riding, swimming and more are all available.
Newfoundland has so many incredible things to do and see...and we could go on forever... so instead we'll just give you a link to one of the best sites to get all the information you need at
