This is an amazing family cabin tucked in among the redwoods. The location is ideal. Literally just steps away from the Russian River with a private dock, you can't get much closer to the river without falling in.
The house itself is a gem. Having been redone multiple times, it is a beautiful blend of classic traditional with the right amount of new touches. Stunning redwood batten board throughout the house sets the perfect backdrop for the house.
The house has been raised off the street and has a great deck off the front which is perfect for summertime barbeques and has enough room to accommodate a bunch of teak cocktail chairs and a table. Perfect for winding down in the evenings following a great day on the river.
As you enter the house, there is a great room with a phenomenal fireplace. The nearly 20-foot ceilings scream for you to sit by the fire and enjoy a glass (bottle?) of your favorite found chardonnay or pinot.
And, the back porch is a wonderful gathering place for dining and lounging with views of the surrounding vistas.
The house really is a great place to getaway to. The access to the river is amazing. The dock is a great way to enjoy the water. Whether you want to rent paddle boats or canoes from Johnson's Beach or just lounge on an inner-tube or raft, there is something special about just going for a swim in the river.
For the beach-goers, Johnson's beach is less than a mile and is a great walk.
For the sportsman, the fishing is great. Do that from the dock, wade upstream and use the adjacent beach, or take a short drive out to Jenner or Bodega to charter a trip. Some friends of ours often plan abalone dives and use the river as a homebase.
If you are into golf, the Northwoods golf course is only 3.8 miles from the house. Designed by Dr. Alister MacKenzie in 1928, the course is a classic MacKenzie design with 9 holes winding through giant redwood trees. (This is the same architect who designed Cypress Point, Augusta National, Meadow Club, Pasatiempo and many other great courses).
For the wine lover, the list of amazing Russian River wineries is tremendous. Korbel does a terriffic tour and has a really great deli and picnic area. Gary Farrell is one of the most well respected wine makers around, producing some super premium wines. Hop Kiln is a little more laid back ... and a lot of fun.
For the foodies, there is a wide variety. Everything from tasty comfort food and special breakfast places (See: The River Inn, Big Bottom Market) to pizza at Andorno's to brewery / pub food (Stumptown Brewery) to high end / romantic / special dinners at Applewoods, Boon, or Seaside Metal. And, delicious eats and mezcal at El Barrio.
For the kids, there are a ton of things to be done. One of our favorites continues to be Pee Wee Golf & Arcade which is just across the river from town (about a mile from the house).
All in all, there is something for everyone here. The Hideaway is a cozy home and a great place to anchor your stay.

This is a family owned property that is working on its 3rd and 4th generations. Our grandparents (Frank and Retta) originally purchased the 'cabin' as a getaway place from their home in the City (San Francisco). They loved it so much that they moved up here full time.
For years, 'the River' has been a very traditional vacation spot for families and adults from San Francisco. In 1964, my parents met at the River when my mom was there for a 'girls weekend' and my dad was up with the guys. I guess it was fated for us to be here. We should all be so blessed.
Growing up, this became our getaway. Only an hour north of San Francisco, we spent many of our best days swimming in the river, building tree forts, playing football on the lawn. Thanksgiving at the river is amazing.
As we have gotten older, it is great to get away to enjoy the tremendous wineries and great cuisine that has made its way into the region. This is a playground for all.
Fran Strain purchased this cabin in 1968
This property sits at the end of quiet street on the river side. With direct access to the river and a private dock that we put in, we have tremendous access to the river -- you can throw a football from the house to the dock.
Growing up, we had a view of the river and the beach. As the river has moved over time, the view has changed as is now one that provides us beautiful panaromas of the willow trees on the beach with a stunning backdrop of redwood trees on the mountains surrounding the Russian River Valley.
And, the house itself is set among a tremendous strand of giant redwoods that are stunning.
With a private dock on the river, there is no better way to spend some lazy days just enjoying the spectacular weather.
The house is like stepping into a time warp. There is no AC. I think the newest item in the house is a toaster. The kitchen is fully stocked with dishes and random spices. The living room is comfy. The furniture is from the 80's-90's along with the VHS collection. In the main den there is a long table with lots of chairs in various stages of broken and repaired. In each room there is a bed and some kind of dresser. In every dresser in every room there was random junk (coloring books, Elmo doll, old pictures, incense, socks, extra bedding) that was left behind. Which means that most dressers were unusable. In the master bedroom there was 3 broken chairs and a coffee table pushed against the walls taking up space. Over all the house did what we needed. A place to sleep and eat. It would be nice if basic items were updated (tv, beds, chairs, storage for clothes) but not necessary.
My first comment is that I would suggest to the owners to get new pictures taken of the house because they don't do it justice. The space is large, bright and perfectly situated in the river. It was clean, organized and well taken care of. The private dock was great for swimming, and the neighborhood is quiet and friendly.
The owners were very responsive - I'd rent this place again no question.
We rented this gem for the Russian River Beer fest and Rib Cook off. It was close to the event and town. They had two docks down by the river to launch your boat. The house is your classic cabin on the river with all the amenities you of home. The kitchen and bath was in excellent working order. In the morning you get great sun in the dining room making for a memorable breakfast. I will stay in this location again if available. It's walking distance to the stump town brewery.
House is perfectly located along the river with private dock. Stretch of river that house is located on is wide and deep which is perfect for swimming. House had plenty of space for 3 couples and kids. We would certainly stay here again!
great property and great location! comfy and cozy too! just steps from the river located in the backyard and less than a mile from downtown. I'll be back!
We had a wonderful weekend away at the Hideaway. The rooms are really small (as pictured), but cozy. The living and dining rooms are large and comfortable - plenty of room to gather. The best part of the house is the dock. It has shade and sun, is located on a great part of the river and was big enough for our group to hang out there all day! Note: bring your own river "gear" (chairs, towels, etc.) as they are not provided with the house.
The house also worked well for kids. There was room for them to play on the floor in the house and there was even some kid-friendly dishes/utensils in the well-stocked kitchen.
We would definitely come again!
The Russian River is a traditional getaway for the old-time San Francisco families. For weeks each summer, the 'City' families would find their way to the Russian River to escape the ever-present Summer fog. With beautiful weather and just a little more than an hour north of the Golden Gate Bridge, this little slice of paradise is a wonderful escape.
Winding among the great California Redwoods, the Russian River is a slow moving river that is a great source of entertainment for generations of families. While 'The Hideaway' has its own private dock, many families make their way to Johnson's beach in Guerneville where many rent paddle boats or canoes to do some exploring up the river.
In additional to all the normal beach and river type activities, the property is also nestled among some world class wineries. The Russian River AVA is an area with special designation. The area is particular well known for its amazing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The cool fog that winds its way up the river valley provides an ideal growing climate that delivers some of the world's very best.
