Los Canos
Los Canos de Meca, as we found out, is a surfers' paradise on the Atlantic coast of Spain. After 3 weeks on the Costa del Sol and a week hiking in the Sierra de Grazalema, this was a very interesting change. The overall vibe of the area is very relaxed and due to the time of the year (February) it was not busy which was a plus, but on the downside, there were few restaurants open. The weather was very predictable - sunny most days and temperatures in the upper teens and low twenties.
The town itself is a bit run down but it is very convenient as a base from which to explore the area. Tarifa is 40 minutes drive and from there one can easily get to Tangiers, Gibraltar is 90 minutes, and Cadiz, one of the most beautiful cities in Spain is 40 minutes. There are plenty of Roman ruins in the area including Bolonia, Ubrique and right in Canos itself. Our accomodation was removed from the town itself but still within earshot of the surf and was in a small enclave. We rented a two bedroom apartment on the ground floor of a two story house. The upstairs is occasionally occupied by the owner and otherwise is not rented. The front of the house looks out on a quiet garden and faces west for the afternoon sun. The inside is reached through French doors that lead directly to the kitchen and living room with the two bedrooms and bathroom to the right. The kitchen, which we used extensively, was convenient and included a clothes washer, although no dishwasher. We really enjoyed our stay!
