About The Owner

We are the second family to own this house; the first was a New Haven family who built the house. Our mother grew up going to Madison in the summers in a house on Middle Beach Road. When she and her brother started families of their own, they realized that one house was too small for two growing families so our father and mother found exactly what they were looking for in Rose Hill Cottage. It allowed for all the different aspects of our families lives. Our parents were of a generation that believed Sunday luncheon was mandatory even in summer and the more formal dining room allowed for that. But the rest of the house, the porch, the easy access to the beach, the safe bike riding neighborhood embraced the easy days of summer. It's a house filled with wonderful summer memories that truly last a lifetime. The house is now owned by the five children, each with their own memories of this great old house. We each loved the place in different ways: my brother loved boating on the Sound, one of my sisters loved reading on the porch, while two loved the beach, and I loved hopping on my bike and exploring North Madison and Killingworth with friends, finding old graveyards and hidden gardens. But we all cherished the early evening on the porch, the long shadows of the setting sun, the cool breeze after a busy day outside with my mother and father each in one of the large comfortable wicker chairs with the water at their backs and all of us facing them recounting our day.

Why The Owner chose Madison

Rose Hill Cottage is truly one-of-a-kind on the Madison shoreline. My parents fell in love with it because of the extraordinary setting and the graciousness of the house. They loved to entertain and did so with great style -- whether it was a large family and friends fourth of July celebration or just cocktails on the porch. The house suited our family perfectly: lots of room for the kids, easy access to the beach, close to town but a thousand years away from hustle and bustle. My parents wanted an uncomplicated house but not a plain one. Rose Hill Cottage became that perfect getaway but not so far away that you are without good grocery stores, restaurants, movie theatres and shopping.

What makes this cottage unique

As you drive up the driveway of Rose Hill Cottage, you can already feel the steady summer breeze and you know you are some place special. Screen doors and the porch let nature in, the gentle rock of the waves, the salty smell of the Sound, all invite you to take your shoes off and relax. You can entertain grandly, or simply. You can keep busy in boats or on bikes, or just relax and read a book on the porch. There is just nothing like falling asleep at night to the sound of the waves. This is truly a place where time forgot; a wonderful glimpse into a bygone era when life was lived fully.
