Castaway by the Sea - Lodge - "Private" Beach Getaway

Bedrooms 1
Property type bungalow
Minimum Stay 5 nights

About the property

1Bed Room, 1 Bath, Kitchen, Eating area

If you enjoy being on the beach, Castaway Lodge is a cleverly designed and thoughtfully appointed cottage set back 125 feet from the water’s edge. It is a charming, immaculate and well equipped, air conditioned studio style bungalow situated on a half acre, with your own private beach. Although small and compact, what it lacks in size it makes up for in character. Castaway is the ideal spot for couples who are outdoor oriented and prefer the seclusion that the grounds provide.

While you are more than able to cook and enjoy your meals inside the cottage there is an outdoor grill and large patio table with chairs under a tree shaded grotto. And after your meal you can take a relaxing stroll along the beach or just nap in the hammock under the cover of coconut palms and almond trees.

The lodge is situated in historic Bodden Town, away from the hustle and bustle of Seven Mile Beach but centrally located for exploring the island. Trips to the Mastic Trail, Botanic Park, Crystal Caves, East End, Rum Point and Turtle Farm are easily accessible, but you will find abundant indigenous wildlife right outside your front door! There is a ‘changing station’ for hermit crabs, wild Cayman parrots scouring the sea grape tree for fruit and you may even spy an iguana in the almond tree!

This is the ideal escape to the place you’ve dreamed about for too long. Worry-free, romantic, idyllic, relaxing----a chance to recharge and spend some quality time with your love at this authentic Private Caribbean Getaway!

About Thom Zerhusen

Susan and Thom are originally from Baltimore, Maryland but they met in Cayman. Thom was working as a dive instructor at Don Foster's Dive and Susan was visiting Cayman on a dive vacation. 'We met on a dive trip to Stingray City and the rest is well...history.'

They decided to call Cayman home and bought a dilapidated beach house in the heart of Bodden Town that they renovated and have lived in for over 20 years.

'After Hurricane Ivan destroyed most of Bodden Town and the Island we had to sart all over. We were lucky to find Castaway and decided to renovate the existing structures and make them available to visitors.' The lodge was first to be finished and became available to guest in 2011 and now the cottage is ready too. 'We have tried to make them unique and special and if you come to Castaway we hope you will find our little piece of paradise as magical as we do.'

Guestbook comments from the owner

This was by far the best place to stay. Our Honeymoon was lifted to such heights staying here. The privacy needed for two newly weds and the beauty of the island all met together beautifully at our cozy spot. The hammocks, sun, sand and of course the sea made our trip unforgettable in every way. Sandy regards and wishes, Niki & Rob

A Week in Paradise

  • 5 of 5

The lodge is private and has wonderful outdoor places to eat and relax both on the beach and in the yard with views of the ocean. The snorkeling off of the beach is wonderful - we saw stingrays, lots of fish and beautiful coral in shallow water. This area of the island is quiet - which is what we look for when we travel. The owners, Thom and Susan, were helpful and shared their love of Cayman with us. A perfect week...we wish we could stay longer!

Quiet little space on the south shore of Grand Cayman

  • 5 of 5

Very small, clean, functional bungalow with private direct access to the very clean beach and lovely snorkeling without having to drive anywhere. The hosts, Thom and Susan, are attentive, kind, and welcoming, but not overbearing. They gave us many very helpful tips about what to do and see and eat. This place is within easy walking distance to a gas station, quick mart, liquor store, and fabulous fish fry shack. We much prefer this type of lodging to the insanity of 7 Mile Beach on the west side. We had a relaxing week here, and would recommend it to others.

The cottage was very well kept, and had everything we needed on our stay.

  • 5 of 5

While small the cottage had everything needed to enjoy the trip. The biggest draw of the property is the private beach with many nooks to relax by the water. Thom and Suzan were very good hosts and worked hard around property and the “yard” to keep it looking picturesque.

Stunning location

  • 5 of 5

The location is stunning, the property owners are over the top friendly and ready to meet your questions. The beach is secluded and clean. We didn't even see anyone else on the beach in October. The home is very clean and everything you need is there for you to use. The appliances are very good, and everything works well. The house is very small, but it doesn't matter because of the location.

Fantastic birthday trip in paradise!!

  • 5 of 5

Thom and Susan are wonderful hosts! There's a rum cake on the table waiting for each stay.. the lodge is efficient, clean, comfortable and safe. The goal was to see a new Caribbean island, get some rest and enjoy the beach.. we snorkeled the reef off our private beach daily and enjoyed the beach. We did rent a car to see the island.. be prepared to drive on the opposite side of the car and road with lots of roundabouts.. we drove from west end(a little sketchy) through 7 mile beach (high rise hotels and bars), Georgetown down to Rum Point (cute beachy town) but enjoyed the quaintness of Bodden Town best. The owners were onsite during our visit as they are waiting to build a new home. They are great hosts and huge lovers of their animals. We ate at a couple close restaurants and a couple at rum point but mostly we cooked at the lodge. This "tiny" house has everything you need, go to the very nice grocery and liquor store on your way in..bring a snorkel and a swim suit and enjoy the environment.. You can't go wrong staying here and we surely hope we can return.
