About this property

Historic Ranch On The Turquoise Trail, Perfect For Retreats, Reunions & Weddings

Rancho Gallina is an award winning inn and eco-retreat, now available for families and groups looking for an authentic home away from home in "Old New Mexico." The ranch has been lovingly restored and is one of the most environmentally friendly properties in New Mexico, rated GreenLeader Platinum by TripAdvisor. Situated on 10 acres along the scenic Turquoise Trail, we are only 10 minutes from the south end of Santa Fe and 10 minutes from the historic mining towns/art colonies of Cerrillos and Madrid. World class cycling, hiking, horseback riding and amazing culture surround us, with easy access to both the Santa Fe (15 mins) and Albuquerque (1 hour) airports.

If you are inquiring about availability for a wedding or retreat we suggest you reach out directly - you can find us listed publicly online as Rancho Gallina, and all of our information is available on the web.

This is an authentic country ranch, not a luxury Santa Fe mansion - designed for people who want to let their hair down and relax in a beautiful, historic setting. This rambling property, built out by ranchers and artists over 75 years, has both incredible character and tons of space, inside and out, for gathering as a group or spending time on your own. Many groups and families find the ranch to be the perfect balance - a chance to spend time together in nature, while not forgoing your privacy and solitude. The ranch was finished by hand, with fabulous woodwork, kiva fireplaces, traditional coved, beamed and latilla ceilings, and beautifully carved wood doors and pillars. We renovated the ranch to preserve the artistry and vision of it's builders, and our neighbors who used to visit here as children (now in their 80s) say it's like stepping back in time.

Our 5 rooms, casitas and suites, each with full ensuite bath, have beds for 16-18 guests, depending on the season. The rooms vary in size from the 300 sq. ft. Moroccan with high ceilings and clerestory windows to the 800 sq. ft. Silverado Suite - a two room suite with a sky-lit studio, sleeping up to 7 guests. There are two casitas at the far end of the courtyard with kitchenettes and quiet privacy, while the Kiva and Moroccan rooms are adjacent to each other and the ranch house living quarters. The queen beds have superior mattresses, quality linens and down comforters. The fold out futons/couches all have memory foam toppers and quality linens. We also have air mattresses and a couple of tent-camping pads if you're so inclined.

The ranch has a living/dining area that comfortably accommodates 8-12 people in both the living room and around the plank dining table. This opens onto a traditional courtyard with gas and charcoal grills, additional courtyard seating and dining tables for larger groups. The kitchen is small (it's an old ranch, remember) but more than adequate for preparing family meals, with a new stove and refrigerator, dishwasher, toaster oven and microwave.

The outdoors is what it's really all about here at Rancho Gallina. We have built out the property with fire pits, pergolas, and a giant octagonal pergola for relaxing in a hammock, playing bocce, or doing yoga. Our hand-built cedar hot tub is a fabulous place to unwind and watch the stars after a long day of hiking, cycling or museum touring. We have excellent wifi, but no TV. Instead of TV, we have hammocks, hummingbirds, and amazing sunsets. We have an outdoor bonfire pit, backyard chickens, and plenty of space to come together or relax alone.

The ranch has held family reunions, weddings, and celebrations of all shapes and sizes. Your hosts Mitch (a trained chef) and Leslie (a really good cook) live in a converted barn at the back of the property, and open their home and kitchen to cater special dinners. If you would like daily breakfast, someone to shop for your group, or just a couple of fancy dinners, we're here to help. We work with local farms and ranches to source the healthiest, organic produce and meats, and pull some of the best espresso in Santa Fe. Let us know your needs and we will send you pricing for our meals and services.

For larger, catered events we open our home (the converted barn behind the ranch house) adding a fabulous barn for dining and gathering - pricing available on request, and booked separately under our business insurance policy. The ranch is family and dog friendly (pet fee is additional), with a fenced courtyard and additional fenced yard off the Sunset Casita.

For events larger than 35 guests, we charge an event fee and have an additional contract for use of the barn and courtyards for entertaining. The Barn can comfortably seat 35-50, and outdoor parties with rented furniture accommodate up to 100 guests.

We said it before, but we'll say it again - this is a real ranch, and a great place to get folks together. We are not walking distance from anything except the hot tub, the arroyo (where a family of Great Horned Owls have taken up residence), the chicken coop and the fire pit. If you are looking for a down to earth, nurturing place to unwind and enjoy life, come on down to Rancho Gallina

Fine family reunion site
The ranch is a unique destination, with vintage appeal. The various accommodations range from modern and elegant to vintage and quirky, but the ambience of the main building is ideal for the kind of multi-generation gathering and interactions that we wanted.

Lovely Ranch for Family Reunion!
We truly enjoyed our stay at the Rancho Gallina. This ranch is just outside of Sante Fe. Perfect for our days trips in and around the area. The ranch is rural, and rustic and has all the unique South West charm of a home that has been built over the decades. We stayed here with 17 people ( 4 families). There was ample room for our own private space, but perfect for group gathering in the evenings. The outdoor patio was perfect for our outdoor dinners. We enjoyed making smores over the fire pit and relaxing in the barrel hot tub. Leslie and Mitch were great hosts. For my father in laws 80th birthday-They made us a fabulous meal in their converted barn. I'm still salivating over the squash side dish- gonna need that recipe! I would recommend this home for any large group or for that weekend get-a-away for you and the Mrs. as they do also run it as a B&B. Thanks for a great stay!

Beautiful, rambling ranch perfect for a big group
We were a group of 16 and we had a wonderful time staying at the Ranch. The property is full of nooks and spaces ideal for relaxation and conversation. We enjoyed preparing simple meals in the kitchen, unwinding in the hot tub, and going for walks in the surrounding area. Leslie and Mitch were wonderful hosts, communicative before our arrival and accommodating during our stay. They cooked us a delicious gourmet meal, served in the charming barn, and had spot-on recommendations for dining and activities in the area. They also graciously did a grocery shop for us so the fridge was stocked with breakfast food when we arrived. I'd highly recommend staying at Rancho Gallina. Thanks for a great stay!

About the host

Host profile image
Mitch and Leslie are fellow travelers and gracious hosts - we love to meet people, we love to cook, and we love to share our home with travelers from around the world. Originally from New York and Maine (respectively) we lived, worked and raised our daughters in Denver for nearly 20 years. We both had long careers with unions and community organizations, expanding access to good jobs and better lives, before settling down into our new life here in New Mexico. We have a roving number of dogs, cats, chickens and other critters sharing the ranch with us. We are so lucky to live in such a beautiful place, and to have great relationships with local farmers and creative foodies, as well as the many people who work to make New Mexico a better place to live.

Why they chose this property

We used to travel to New Mexico from Denver to "get away from it all" without having to go very far. The incredible skies, clear mountain air, and endless cycling and hiking opportunities kept drawing us back, as well as the incredible culture and deep commitment to community, family and locally grown food. When life led us on this quest for a simpler existence, it only made sense to go where we like to be and figure out how to make a living here. We have invested countless hours and dollars into renovating this beautiful place, while remaining true to its authenticity and old-school character. There is a lot of history here, and we are learning it and passing it on. We are committed to minimizing our impact on the planet, and have installed 54 solar panels, 3 geo thermal heating and cooling systems, and low flow toilets, faucets and shower heads throughout the property. We have electric car chargers and an organic garden, to boot. We have let the land grow - using rain catchment to water the native plants and support the dozens of species of birds (and accompanying bees) that come through here every year. The Arroyo Gallina runs on our eastern boundary, and is home to owls, hawks, rabbits and coyotes. All this, with protected night skies, and only 20 minutes to everything Santa Fe has to offer.

What makes this property unique

This rambling property was built over generations - from its original women owners (an artist and a doctor) to cattle ranchers to horse breeders, and back to artists before we purchased it in 2012. The unique touches - wooden vigas, plastered walls and ceilings, hand-built kiva fireplaces - are the contributions of dozens of past inhabitants, and we are doing our best to preserve this past while leaving our own mark. In addition to sharing and preserving an incredible space, we add our culinary creativity for guests whenever possible. We have hosted reunions, weddings and birthday parties ranging from intimate affairs to 100 person blowouts. Our favorites are family and friend dinners in the barn, featuring our take on "New Mexiterranean" - food inspired by the Spanish, French, Moroccan, Middle eastern and Italian traditions with local chiles, local seasonal fruits and vegetables, and made with love.
