Secluded Hawaiian Tropical Oasis with Private Swimming Pool

Aloha! Thanks you for considering “Hawaii Paradise Found”. Imagine yourself taking a dip in the private pool at your vacation home. This beautiful Indonesian-inspired compound is nestled on 11 acres of ancient Hawaiian Ohi’a and Uluhe forest with extensive ornamental palm, bamboo, orchid, bromeliad, citrus and tropical gardens. Once you pass through the private gate, you will be transported to an oasis of tranquility as you drive through a canopy of Monkeypod trees surrounded by many varieties of palms, bamboos, gingers, tropical rhododendrons, and more. We are the closest rental with a private pool to view where rivers of lava from the active Kalapana lava flow in Volcanoes National Park enter the Pacific Ocean.

Enjoy a cool and relaxing dip in our 32’ x 16’ swimming pool, surrounded by decking and completed with resort quality lounge chairs, umbrellas and pool floats. Perfect for a romantic get-away, friends and family holiday or family reunion.

The compound features three bedrooms, and three and a half baths including the Master Suite located steps away from the main house in a private separate pavilion.

Downstairs, the main house has two elegantly appointed bedroom suites, each with its own spacious bathrooms and showers, bamboo cabinets, custom art-work, high-end fixtures, sliding pocket doors, 10 foot high ceilings, and overlooking the courtyard gardens, and ocean beyond. Sunrises on the private covered 10’ wide lanai are the perfect spot to enjoy morning coffee and plan the adventures that await your stay. The Pineapple Suite features a Queen Size bed, while the Lilikoi Suite (similarly appointed with its own bathroom) offers two twin beds for maximum flexibility and comfort. The linens are all high thread count cotton, and towels are soft and sumptuous.

The upstairs living and dining area of the main house is an elegant, serene space with soaring 24’ high ceilings, wide-plank Acacia wood floors, whitewashed Douglas fir walls and ceilings, with commanding views of the Pacific Ocean over the professionally landscaped gardens and coconut palm tree grove. Custom art from local artists adorns the walls. You can choose to lounge indoors on the comfortable and casual tropical elephant bamboo couches, and put your feet up on a custom, locally made Monkey Pod slab coffee table. Or you may prefer to nap or enjoy cocktails in the tropical rattan sitting area on the spacious covered lanai outdoors. When it’s time to dine, you can enjoy your meal indoors and admire the organic feel of a locally produced Ohi’a tree trunk dining room table base, or you may prefer to dine outdoors on a lovely marble table on the lanai overlooking the swimming pool and deck, with views of the ocean and the tropical courtyard garden below.

The East Side of the Big Island is a foodies’ paradise. Take advantage of the abundant local produce, grass fed beef, amazing fresh fish, and numerous farmers markets to enjoy Hawaii’s culinary diversity and abundance. The fully equipped gourmet kitchen, with high-end stainless steel appliances (oven and cooktop, refrigerator, garbage disposal, and dishwasher), offers every convenience a professional chef or home cook needs.

The upstairs powder room features a marble lotus flower sink, bamboo vanity and high end finishes.

The main home frames the ocean views through an amazing 16 foot wide, custom Indonesian sliding wood and capiz shell “barn door” with separate screens opening onto the 10’ wide wrap around lanai with vintage furnishings and fabrics. The outdoor areas are lit with hand crafted Balinese pendant lamps and hand forged copper sconces for chilled out, relaxing entertaining.

The upstairs loft is a great place to enjoy Netflix, Apple TV or Amazon Prime, or Pandora Radio from a wide screen digital Internet TV. Free Wi-Fi and cell phone connectivity are included. The loft offers a cozy spot to read and relax or to do yoga. Or you may just want to search the ocean for whales from this highest point in the house with commanding views.

You can’t beat the extra privacy and comfort offered by taking a few short steps to your own Master Suite (Royal Palm Suite). This oasis, separate from the main house and adjacent to the swimming pool, has soaring 16-foot high ceilings, Indonesian Capiz Shell and Mahogany sliding doors, ocean views, a full bath complete with an outdoor shower, as well as covered lanais with Balinese pendant lighting. You can gaze at the courtyard garden, the organic citrus tree grove, the ocean, or at custom artwork from local artists. Daytime or nighttime you will want to enjoy your own private deck for sunbathing, stargazing or yoga. The generously proportioned deck is perfect for individual or group yoga, too.

During your stay at our 11-acre gated, park-like estate, you will want to stroll through the lush tropical gardens around the house. From there, you can walk down the Vireya (Tropical Rhododendron) Trail that meanders through the Ohi’a and Uluhe forest. It comes ablaze with color from both the Lehua flowers and from the vivid reds, oranges, pinks and yellows on the Vireyas and other flowering plants. The trail comes out at the bottom of the property, and leads you back to the house through a grove of 400 coconut palm trees. You may see some of the sacred white owls, or watch the hawks that live on the property. It’s tough to describe just how serene the tropical breezes are when they blow through a grove of 400 palm trees!

We welcome you to book your next Hawaiian vacation at this truly exceptional residence and tropical gardens.

Enjoy the stunning views of the Red Road on a short 15 minute drive to "Ahalanui Beach Park" (a naturally warmed 95 degree seawater pond) as well as Wai Opae Protected tide-pools in Kapoho where you will find some of the best swimming and snorkeling on the east side of our island. Or just 5 minutes away is Uncle Robert's, a great place to take in the local fare, with its kava bar and local Hawaiian entertainment. Located a 5 or 10 minute drive from famous Kalapana black sand beach, 6 miles from the quaint village of Pahoa, the property is private, but in a central location for swimming, eating, hiking and other vacation activities. Old Hilo town is a must visit with its colorful farmers market, spectacular Hilo Bay and the Hawaiian Tropical Botanic Gardens, as well as shopping, and interesting museums to learn all about the history of “The Big Island”.

The property is only 40 minutes from Volcanoes National Park, 35 minutes from Hilo airport, and 10 minutes from the quaint village of Pahoa, which has some of the best dining in our area featuring Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, Italian, Tex-Mex and local Hawaiian restaurants.

About David Davenport

Owners Robert Welsch and David Davenport love gardening, tropical jungles, and swimming in our pool or the ocean. Robert's career as a landscape designer led us to Hawaii where we purchased land in 2005, started planting in 2008, and built our house in 2014.

David Davenport purchased this house in 2015

Why David Davenport chose Pahoa

The majestic beaches and rural coastline, the tropical plant palette, and the tranquility of being on your own 11 acres combine to make our home a perfect getaway. We love the low-key, rural "Old Hawaii" feel of this part of the Big Island. Chill, relaxing, and rejuvenating.

What makes this house unique

If you enjoy plants, gardens, rare and unusual palm and bamboos, and beautiful flowers, our property has been described as "like having your own botanic garden". The new swimming pool and outdoor entertaining areas (fire-pit, outdoor grill, outdoor shower, etc...) are perfect for morning coffee, an afternoon swim, or entertaining and sharing with family and friends.

Loved Every Minute Here

  • 5 of 5

This place is unique and the grounds are stunning!!! There is a long driveway with trees and flowers everywhere. Lots of land with 2 security gates and we felt safe and never had to lock the doors. There is a nature trail on the property you can walk through. They have a gazebo and a whole field of coconut trees. Lots of fruit trees too. The best part was picking fresh tangerines and making juice in the morning. The star fruit and limes were also delicious. I love the outdoor living. We have small children and even though we were in the Master and they were in the main house we could hear them if they called for us without a monitor. We would leave just the screen doors shut for a nice breeze. There is a fence they can put up around the pool. At night the frogs sing you to sleep and I have never seen stars so bright at night. This is a great location, not too far from the Volcano National Park. It is really close to the end of the road trail where you can rent bikes to view the lava where it enters the ocean. The bike companies have kid bikes and different carriers to rent too. We also hiked to see the surface lava and did a boat tour to see it close flowing into the ocean. Wednesdays and Sundays there is an Uncle Roberts Market with music, food and shopping and the whole town will be there. David left us some passion fruit purée that was delicious!! There are other fun things to do like rainbow falls, the banyon tree forest, and the tide pools had great snorkeling! Carl Smith beach park has a ton of turtles you can snorkel with and my 3 year old loved it!! My kids liked this house better than the condo on the beach in Kona. My kids cried when we had to leave. We hope to return here someday!!!

Owner's Response: Aloha Janna, I don't usually get to meet our guests, so it was nice to be able to meet you and your family and give you a personal tour of our place . I'm glad you got a chance to enjoy the property, the pool and gardens, and that you ventured out quite a bit to enjoy a lot of my favorite activities. Come back soon! -David

Incredibly wonderful stay !

  • 5 of 5

My family of 4 adults and 2 kids just left Hawaii Paradise Found, the wonderful creation of David and Robert; we have concluded that leaving was a big mistake - our stay was just fantastic. We visited from Boxing Day just past New Years, and loved every minute. You can see the the details from the listing, so I won't rehash. Instead, I'd like to say that the pictures don't fully capture the grandeur and beauty; in the same way that your camera won't be able to capture Kilauea, the pics on this site can't fully capture how marvelous it feels to stand on my deck and look out at my orchard and palm tree arcade and gardens. I mean David and Robert's orchard and trees and gardens, but whatever details details. I had a concern that my family would pick all the fruit (you can eat it off the trees, so fun!) not leaving any for you future guests, but there were still a few tangelos and lemons hanging when we left. My nephew tried to eat all of the ginger flowers (sorry David!) and may have succeeded :) If you're still reading and want to go to a less-developed part of Hawaii, far from the maddening crowds, and look out on an incredible tropical setting every beautiful day, and feel really blessed, then just book this place if you can! In the interests of review credibility, I will say that the near-by (7 miles I think) incredible black sand clothing optional beach requires scrambling up and down a hill (not handicap accessible), and if your brother in law loves it as much as mine did you may have to physically drag him away from it at the end of your stay (warm water!). Black sand beach, lava field, Uncle Robert's market, all these things listed here are truly awesome (and if you go to Hilo get the fruit mochi at Two Sisters - just do it, its amazing, I can't believe it hasn't spread to the mainland yet!), ok I'm digressing - thanks again David and Robert!

Truly Paradise Found

  • 5 of 5

Like other reviews say the property is even more amazing than photos show. Beautiful home. It was the two of us and it was spectacular. Makes return to normal life very difficult. We stayed one week and spent several days never leaving the property. But did go see Sunday Farmer’s market in Pahoa for great food, Kahena black sand beach, Ahalanui tidal pool, Volcano National Park were great sights. Uncle Roberts on Wednesday night has music; good food with great atmosphere. Locals very friendly. Amber the caretaker is close and great asset. Can’t wait to return!!!! Thank you for amazing memories.

Best vacation!

Thank you for sharing your wonderful house with us. It exceeded our expectations. The gardens and the home were beyond amazing. We couldn't have wished for more. The kids didn't want to leave the property. They were happy to play in the yard and the pool all day. However, we were able to spend several days exploring the island. There is so much to do an see across the island. My youngest cried when we told him it was time to pack to go home.

Absolutely Stunning

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for 7 nights and were completely blown away by the property. It felt like every day we were discovering new details every single day throughout the property that made us geek out. This was a great place to come back to after long days exploring the big island. We even designated a day just to swim in the pool, explore the gardens, relax, and take pictures.

Be sure to check out Kaleo's in nearby Pahoa. We ended eating there 4 times during our visit and we were never disappointed cause the service is fast and food is fresh and delicious. We also cooked a few meals in and wow this kitchen is stocked. Previous guests have left a lot of ingredients and David and Robert provide almost every cooking tool needed so definitely check it out before going grocery shopping.

Don't forget to look up in the evening and if the clouds aren't overhead the stars are so clear and beautiful. Thank you David and Robert for sharing your home with us. We will definitely be back!
