About this property

Provence Paradise: 13th Century Private Retreat Self Catering

After a long hiatus, our 800 year-old home is once again available to welcome guests. We offer a private fully self-contained, two bedroom apartment taking the entire top floor.

Entry is via the magnificent original wide 800 year old stone spiral staircase which leads into the sun filled private apartment. Leading off the kitchen is a spacious bathroom with a 1000 cm wide shower, toilet and washbasin.

The master bedroom consists of a romantic canopy iron Queens size 4-poster bed.

The second bedroom has two twin beds. Like the lounge room, the bedroom has breathtaking views across the village roofs and surrounding hills.

The main lounge has an enormous vaulted ceiling with windows on three sides. A large country table perfect for enjoying home cooked meals or take away for the many restaurants the village has to offer. A beautiful comfortable couch and chairs, TV Monitor and high-speed internet are available.

An additional large bedroom off the central staircase maybe available upon request should it be required for an additional cost.

Our guests have at their disposal, a grand library which is situated on the ground floor. A perfect place to meet at the end of the day with family and friends. The very private walled medieval courtyard leads off the library. A BBQ is provided as well as tables and chairs. Look closely at the walls, as they come complete with arrow slots! The courtyard is perfect for relaxing after a day of sightseeing in the warmer months.

The village of Mazan has all amenities, two boulongeries, several coffee shops, and bars, butcher, newsagency, two pharmacies, book and gift store, bicycles hire and moped hire, large SuperU supermarket and a smaller ‘Spa’ convenience store. Two pizza shops, Chinese/Thai restaurants, kebab and German restaurant and two hairdressers and beauty salons. The village also contains the famous ‘Chateau Mazan’ and its Michelin star restaurant ‘I’Ingenue’ perfect for that special occasion; dine in or on their stunning terrace.

Mazan is the perfect base from which to explore all the region has to offer. Most attractions are within a 30-minute drive.

The unique benefit of this property is its stunning location. Perfect as a base with dozens of attractions no more than 30 minutes in all directions from the house. From vineyards, swimming, cycling, walking, mountain climbing, kayaking, cannoning, markets, cliff top villages, lavender fields, historical churches and monuments or simply relaxing and doing nothing at all, Mazan is a delightful medieval village that offers all amenities (restaurants, cafes and supermarket), whilst not over crowded and noisy with tourists, especially at night.

The closest lake for swimming is 5km from the village with small sandy beach
For those bicycle enthusiasts, ride to the summit of Mont Ventoux or cycle the small country roads, perfect for all levels of fitness. A truly unique and pleasurable experience in the heart of Provence.

Authentic French village lifestyle
A beautiful property restored faithfully with all the comforts of home. The views from the living area are simply breath taking. We had a fabulous stay and the local restaurants were perfect. A great base to tour the area and not too far from Avignon to utilise the train. We shopped at the local Saturday market and watched the Tour De France as it raced through the village. The weather was perfect and we cannot wait to return one day. Susan is brilliant and nothing is too much trouble. Highly Highly recommend to all.

STUNNING APARTMENT IN A GORGEOUS MANOR HOUSE
We couldn't fault this wonderful French Medieval house! The listing description was 100% accurate regarding location, layout and facilities. Susan was exceptional helpful in supplying us with information on the workings of this amazing apartment situated on the top floor of the manor house and surrounding area. It was beautifully presented in every aspect, perfectly clean and comfortable. We loved the village and its central location to all the local attractions. Having at our disposal the ground floor library and courtyard was perfect, very private and filled with history. We spent our days touring around the area visiting perched villages, wineries, abbeys and then relaxed in our beautiful apartment at night. The village had many restaurants all within walking distance which meant we didn't have to drive to dinner. The apartment had a divine kitchen where we were able to prepare our meals when we didn't eat out. We highly recommend this wonderful property to everyone who wishes to visit Provence and base yourselves to truly enjoy the feeling of living in a real French village! - Thanks again Susan, we shall return!

Our passion more than 20 years ago with our first purchase of an ancient stone village house in the 1000 year old perched circulade village of Murviel-les-Beziers – Languedoc – Roussillon - South of France. Although my husband, daughter and I live in Australia, our desire to travel and live as locals in this non-touristy wine village inspired us to find old, history filled and uniquely special properties. Our second property venture is our 800-year-old former Knights Templar house in the village of Mazan – Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur. This is our property featured here.
Additionally, we are co-owners of a once near-ruined chateau, breathing new life into its timeworn walls. Our collective passion for history, culture, and the timeless allure of these architectural gems has grown into a vibrant community spanning the globe.
We love being hosts and sharing our local knowledge and passion for preserving the past so generations in the future may enjoy.

Why they chose this property

Perched at the highest point of Mazan, our residence offers a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape, a patchwork of vineyards, and the iconic silhouette of Mt Ventoux standing sentinel in the distance. The air is filled with the fragrance of lavender and the warmth of the Provencal sun, creating an ambiance that transports you to a bygone era.
The location is not only steeped in history but strategically positioned at the heart of Provence, offering unparalleled access to the region's treasures. Explore the cobbled streets of Gordes, admire the breathtaking views from Bonnieux, wander through the charming waterways of L'Isle sur la Sorgue, and bask in the grandeur of the Papal City of Avignon. Each of these iconic destinations is a short journey away, making our home the perfect hub for your Provencal adventures.

What makes this property unique

Strategically located for exploring Gordes, Bonnieux, L'Isle sur la Sorgue, and Avignon. Mazan offers tranquillity, local delights, and a private courtyard. Unwind in a blend of past and present, where Provencal magic awaits. Your unique private getaway begins here.

To appreciate the regions contrasting landscapes at a relaxing pace, the vineyards of Chateauneuf du Pape, or the Dentelles du Montirail the Comtat Plain, expanses of lavender in the Pays de Sault, the hilltop villages of the Luberon, the rivers of the Pays de sorgues, this region features a network of signposted routes for cycle tourists, over 1000 km in totally, travelling on small peaceful roads, away from the major traffic.
A truly unique and pleasurable experience in the heart of Provence.
