About this property

Charming Apartment -- Hike from your doorstep

Secluded, newly renovated apartment in a 100 year old stone garage. Walk/hike, mountain bike, or cross-country ski right from your door. Ground floor entry and eat-in kitchen with a living room/bedroom upstairs; the main house is 130' away.

The space is perfect for a couple or a couple with kids (maximum capacity is 2 adults and 2 children 14 or under). The kitchen is about 17' by 7', with lots of windows, all new stainless steel appliances (including a dishwasher), a new counter and sink, and redone cabinets. It's very well stocked with high end pots, pans and cooking gear. There's a table that seats four.

Upstairs the living and bedroom space is one long room, about 25' long. The floor is 17' wide, giving a good feeling of spaciousness, but given the roof pitch the walkable space is about 10 feet wide. There's a new queen bed and two 5 inch twin mattresses perfect for kids. There's a comfy living space with a love seat, a leather chair, and a large, new TV. The bathroom is small, with a shower, sink, and toilet and great views of the park.

Outside is a private area with a new table and four chairs, a Weber charcoal grill, and a chimnea with two Adirondack chairs.

The garage below the space is used for storage, not for parking our cars, and we will refrain from accessing it when we have weekend guests (we also have a shed for items we use more often).

We accept well-trained adult dogs for stays of one week or less.

Beautiful stone cottage in the woods
The cottage is exactly as advertised and very comfortable for a couple or one person looking for some peaceful seclusion. The lovely hosts, Donna and Peter, are just a minute away but very respectful of their guests privacy. Any questions were quickly and kindly addressed. The cottage was clean, cute and well equipped. The bed was outstanding. Slept so well there! The bathroom is small (as advertised) but totally doable. The outdoor area with chimenea is perfect for fireside s’mores and stargazing. I would love to stay again sometime. Highly recommend.

Very secluded in the woods
Very cool old Stone garage redone. It's very private up in the woods. It's also very small. If you have larger family members it would be difficult to use the bathroom. Would recommend for a couple.

Better than expected!
I stayed with my two kids for a week while one of my kids had daily appointments in a nearby clinic. To be able to come back to this cottage and let them run around outside in a perfect outdoor space was amazing. The cottage was perfect for the three of us and the kitchen had everything we needed and more! The host was so friendly and responsive. This stay went above and beyond any expectations I had!

About the host

Donna and I loved our old house, but thought that being right on Harriman State Park would be a game changer and it was. Whether it's a long hike or a quick 40 minutes with the dog, we get out into our beautiful part of Harriman daily.

We lived in NYC and Long Island, but have been Rockland based for many years now and love it.

Why they chose this property

The main house is a brick Georgian colonial built in the 1920s as the main house for a large family estate. Today the estate's stone barns are the nearby residences of our friends and neighbors and the Mahwah River runs through it all.

We loved the pretty stone garage (which predates the house) and decided to renovate the apartment as we really enjoyed sharing our other house - also historic -- with people who appreciate it as we do. We look forward to helping guests take full advantage of our amazing location.

What makes this property unique

The secluded location with a choice of more gentle paths or challenging hiking right out your door is pretty unique! And all just 30 minutes from the George Washington Bridge.
