About Susan Gudgell

We are long time Orcas Islanders -- Wally grew up on Orcas and Susan was drawn here because of summers with her grandparents on nearby Samish Island. The natural beauty was our initial attraction in building a life here, but the wonderful community of eclectic neighbors have kept us here. It has been a great place to raise our family.

Susan Gudgell purchased this cottage in 1994

Why Susan Gudgell chose Eastsound

We both have long family histories in the islands. We heard about this property 25+ years ago, tucked away on Turtleback Mountain, and came to take a look. Standing on the bluff, looking at West Sound to the south, and the moonrise over Mt. Woolard to the east, we said, "this is where we want to spend the rest of our lives." Pure magic.

What makes this cottage unique

Experience serenity here on the farm, taking walks to view lovely vistas, gathering your salad from the garden, breakfast from the chicken coop, and paddling around the pond. For your adventures, this is centrally located on Orcas Island, close to the ferry, close to Eastsound, and just minutes from Turtleback Mountain Preserve. Less than 15 miles from historic Rosario Resort and Moran State Park.

Lovely cabin!

  • 4 of 5

This cabin is very nice. We arrived on a cold day and were happy to find a propane stove. It quickly warmed up the cabin and was easy to use with the remote thermostat. The cabin had everything we needed and the beds were very comfortable. High winds cut out the power on the island for a few hours and when I contacted the owner about it, she was very quick to respond. Only thing we thought was missing was a pantry or a few empty kitchen cabinets for the food we brought, there is a pantry but it was filled with towels and other items. Would love to come back during the spring or summer so we can enjoy the vegetable garden and some fresh eggs from the chickens.

Owner's Response: I'm so glad you enjoyed the cottage, despite our bit of blustery weather. There should be plenty of shelf space, so I'm sorry it got filled with guest supplies. That's a great suggestion and we'll make sure areas are cleared for food items and so on. We'd be pleased to welcome you back -- the chickens are laying eggs like crazy since the sun came out!

Magical Cottage in the woods!

  • 5 of 5

We checked into the Dragon Fly Cottage after passing the rustic automatic entry gate. It was dusk, a week before Christmas. We arrived with rabbits and wild birds around the front porch, it was an animal sanctuary. The cottage was all lit up with the fireplace going and Christmas music playing, it was very quaint. All the right touches, including BBQ. We enjoyed our own homecooked breakfast as well as dinner each night. Truly a cozy little island retreat!

Cozy and quiet, but close to town.

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time. We were lucky enough to have a sunny afternoon and hiked up to Turtle Head. Do that if you can, it’s a beautiful view. The trailhead was right up the road from the property. It’s only a few minutes into town if you want to grab groceries or dinner. We liked feeding the chickens and chilling by the stove with a hot cup of coffee. Super cute, quiet and cozy. One tip, book your ferry the day you book your trip. We didn’t and then couldn’t get reservations the week of.

Cozy cottage with everything you need while away from home. Our kids loved the loft bedroom and want to come back to see the garden and chicken coop in full bloom!

Perfection!

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful and so peaceful - I could have stayed a month! This was a great home base to explore Orcas. Perfect for a family of 4. Our kids loved the farm setting and the loft bedroom. Super comfortable beds. Well stocked kitchen. Updated bathroom. Loved the garden and fresh picked tomatoes! We will be back and will stay longer next time!

OMG!!! Quiet, special, beautiful, love!!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I have been visiting the San Juan Islands since we were kids. We, also, had brought our children to Moran State Park and many other great places. We are voting this lovely, well-appointed cabin one of our best places we've stayed. Beautiful gardens, sassy, sweet chickens (you can visit them anytime!), privacy (but, felt like if we needed anything, the owners would be there), and the cabin! Comfortable bed, great sheets and comforters, we slept like babies. And the whole property was so serene. What a grand birthday it was. Thank you Susan and Wally😊?
