About Jane Chew

A retiree who was fortunate enough to discover later in life this beautiful part of the world. I'm a bit of an adventurer and lover of music, good food, friends and family. I live north of Boston in a community with a population of 25,000 in 11 square miles with lots of retail shopping aka traffic/chaos! I share a home with my daughter and her family and have 2 grandchildren. My mom lived with my family for 30+ years and I've pretty much become my mother!

Jane Chew purchased this cottage in 2001

Why Jane Chew chose Grand Étang

When I first came to this wonderful Acadian area in 2000, I fell in love with the beauty of the land, the people, music and food. It felt like "home". Though I do not speak the language, my mother was French Canadian and everyone looked and sounded like family and were so welcoming and friendly. My first thoughts were that it was like stepping back in time 40-50 years. A simpler time when people weren't so stressed and preoccupied with a million thoughts/things to do. It hasn't changed much since then. The best part of it (sometimes the most challenging) is that there's no easy way to get there from here. I drive 14 hours 2-3 times each year to visit. If it was easier to access it wouldn't be the hidden gem it is.

What makes this cottage unique

An inspirational place where you can enjoy mountain views, walks, and hikes or just sit and listen to the waves wash over the rocks on the shore and watch the sunset on the water. There is the wonderful Cape Breton Highland National Park just 10 minutes away. Many restaurants, whale watching, live music most summer evenings at the local taverns. Great musicals/plays put on by Le Conseil des arts de Chéticamp. Boutique shops /galleries featuring local artists. World class golf courses nearby.

Quaint Cottage in Grand Etang was a great location, a well stocked house, & walkable to the sea.

We loved our stay in the little purple house. We were sorry we didn't allow more time to just hang out at the house. We walked to the sea every day, enjoyed great Celtic music in the surrounding towns, took some amazing hikes along the Cabot Trail, and would love to return to Cape Breton and the quaint cottage in the future.

Pretty outside, good location

  • 1 of 5

Apart from the washer and dryer, everything was old and tatty, needs a complete refurbish! My sister hated it so much we didn't stay.

Owner's Response: I know how much you wanted to impress your sister visiting from London with your new Nova Scotia home. I'm sorry the cottage didn't meet expectations and hope that the rest of your travels around Nova Scotia did favorably impress. It's an amazing place and I wish you well in your new home.

Perfect getaway

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for four nights as part of a ten day road trip through Atlantic Canada. Originally booked for three nights but loved it so much we asked to stay an extra night. Perfect spot to explore the Cabot Trail from. Clean, cozy, and quaint, full of folk art treasures and remarkable collections of beach stones. On the main road but set back far enough it's not an issue, plenty of easy parking. Well equipped with all the creature comforts. Wonderful walking paths right out side the door that meander around meadow and down to the sea. Gorgeous sunsets from the back porch. The owner and caretaker were nice and helpful, easily reached, though we didn't need anything. We hope to stay here again next year. It was just the two of us but I imagine this would be a good place for a family to spend a week.

Very interesting cottage to stay on, full of art works and great decor in a beautiful location

  • 4 of 5

We had a great time here, the sunsets off the back deck are incredible . House has so many interesting art objects it is fascinating to walk around it . Would have liked 2 full bathrooms instead of 1 full and 1 half but that was a minor inconvenience . Very relaxing and beautiful place to stay
