About this property

Converted farmhouse near mountain resort, skiing, summer activities, sightseeing

Location:
Located in Raduil, a village in the foothills of the Rila Mountains south of Sofia, the house is well placed for winter and summer trips. The Borovets ski resort is only a 15 minute drive away where you can enjoy some of the cheapest skiing in Europe! In the summer, Borovets becomes a base for summer activities. Depending on the time of the year, activity holidays such as skiing, mountain biking, horse riding, walking and guided mountain hiking are possible. The house is also well placed for sightseeing, bird watching, photography or just getting away from it all.

The nearest shop is less than a minute away. More shops are in the village centre where bars are located too. There is a good restaurant and bar called Duvaro.

With car hire, many areas of interest can easily be reached or transport can be arranged from the village. To the west, the amazing Rila Monastery, the Seven Lakes and the hot spa baths of Sapareva Banya with Sofia towards the north and Plovdiv to the east. All are easy day trips. By incorporating an overnight stay you can venture a little further to reach more great places and this is something you may want to consider if you are staying longer time.

This is a versatile location, whether you are looking for an adventure holiday, a family holiday, a quiet, get away from it all break or a lively one incorporating the nightlife of Borovets.

Access:
The house is a short distance along a grass lane. The lane is maintained, so is passable at all times. Both doors to the property are only navigable via steps so are not suitable for wheelchair access. The spiral staircase between the ground and first floors might not be suitable for people with mobility issues but there are standard external stairs as an alternative.

Layout and Facilities:
The house accommodates up to 8 people in 3 bedrooms comprising 2 twin rooms on the middle floor and a pine clad loft with 4 single beds, which may be configured as twin or singles. The ground floor features two bathroom/wet rooms with toilets, showers and the jacuzzi in the large bathroom is ideal for relaxing. The lounge /dining room has an L-shaped cushioned bench, a dining table and chairs, a two seater sofa, a TV, DVD and CD player and a reading library. The kitchen is equipped for self catering and features rustic beams and a glass-fronted log-burning fire. The house is fully alarmed and has off-road parking, giving you peace of mind. It is well insulated, making it cool in the summer and easier to heat in the winter. The covered porch makes a lovely terrace to sit out on.

Heating and Hot Water:
During winter months, the fire operates a boiler which runs the central heating and hot water. This is normal for rural Bulgaria and instruction will be given on how to operate it. Depending on heating and hot water requirements, the system can be boosted by a second log-burner and ultimately an electric immersion heater. Fires can be lit for you if required and this is especially useful if are out and about and want to come home to a warm house. For many, log fires can be a joy to maintain and we've experienced friends competing with each other! They do require some physical activity though, so they may not be suitable for the elderly or people with mobility problems. During the summer, hot water is provided by solar panels on the roof of the house, in conjunction with the electric immersion heater.

Outbuildings and Garden:
The house has a large informal garden with fruit trees and rock features bordering a gravelled area for off-road parking suitable for several cars.

Several restored rustic timber-framed and daubed outbuildings enclose an area suitable for outdoor eating, There is also a ‘summer kitchen,’ a covered area with clay oven that has been adapted for barbecue use and may be used all year round. Garden furniture is provided and covered seating is available in the outbuildings. The traditional barn houses an additional wood-fired boiler to boost the house heating and hot water supply and a secure ski locker for guests using their own skis.

Nearby:
Skiing Facilities: An 8km/15 minute drive from Mavrud Lodge, is one of Bulgaria’s prime ski resorts, Borovets. Featured in the UK press as top value European resort (Metro & Observer). It offers a range of winter sports and has a world-class biathlon track. It also has several ski schools, all with English-speaking instructors. Borovets is ideal for beginners and intermediates to hone their skills but also has plenty to offer the more experienced skier. Night time skiing is also provided.

Borovets key facts - highest skiing area: 2560m; total length of runs: 58km; longest run: 12km; cross country tracks: 35km.

Non-skiers can also take the gondola to enjoy the mountain views.

Borovets is also a base for summer pursuits, offering day walks, mountain biking and guided mountain hiking with overnight stays in mountain huts.

There are plenty of après-ski activities at the many clubs, restaurants and bars, all at manageable prices. There are clubs to suit most tastes and the night-life attracts all ages.

Cash points and internet access are also available.

Reasonably priced transport to and from Borovets may be arranged locally, at times to suit you, whether skiing or partying into the night!

10/10 Excellent

Perfect for what we needed.
We arrived late on Saturday night (we had a hire car) and was met by Mimi and Carmen who gave us a quick tour and showed us how things worked. The house was pretty easy to find. We were 6 adults (3 couples) so there was plenty of space. It was pretty cold over New Year but fire in the kitchen was more than sufficient to keep the house warm, and provide hot water for us all. The house and grounds are nice, peaceful and secure. The beds are comfy, with plenty of extra bedding. The showers were lovely and hot. Radhuil is quiet and has a couple of nice restaurants. We visited Duarvo a couple of evenings. The guy in there speaks very good English, the food is tasty and the drinks are very cheap. Borovets is about a 15 min drive from Radhuil. It costs about 40 LEV in a taxi (Carmen helped book us one). Overall the house and location were perfect for what we needed. The hosts were super helpful leading up to our visit. And Mimi and Carmen were helpful during our stay.

Excellent, as described.
This house had everything we needed for our stay. There was a friendly welcome with a complementary basket full of essentials. It was easy to start the fire each evening and it never got too cold. The stairs are narrow but we did expect this and was no issue. Perhaps an elderly guest would consider this. Overall it was as described and the communication and assistance from the host and property management was excellent. The previous reviewer must have been grumpy as I cannot see why they would give it such a bad review. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to my friends.

About the host

Host profile image
We are two brothers who both live in the UK. We both like Eastern Europe and we both enjoy things which are slighty off the beaten track.

While travelling in Bulgaria in 2005, we fell in love with the slightly quirky Borovets ski resort and the nearby rural village of Raduil, with its quaint houses, fertile, well tended vegetable and fruit gardens and its tank and fighter jet on display on the main road. Before this trip we had seen a TV programme about buying holiday properties in Bulgaria. We contacted an estate agent and had a fascinating two days seeing many properties and getting the chance to meet the people who lived in them. We enjoy walking, bird watching and sightseeing and the Raduil area and Bulgaria generally, offers plenty of that. One of us enjoys reading and quiet time, the other, photography and skiing. We've visited the house at different times of the year so we've been able to appreciate the different seasons and they all have something to offer.

Why they chose this property

Upon seeing the house, we knew this was the place for us. We had the house restored and upgraded and this was completed by 2008. Raduil is surrounded by beautiful countryside - the foothills of the Rila mountains. We like Raduil because you get a real taste of Bulgaria. You are not far from Borovets but you can get away from things here and escape the higher prices of holiday resorts. That said, Borovets is reasonably priced compared with many other European ski resorts.

Plenty of birds come into the garden or fly overhead so if bird watching is your thing, you can start around the house and easily walk into the surrounding hills. We've had plenty of good sightings.

There are plenty of outdoor activities from skiing at Borovets, to golf at Dolna Banya or Ihtiman or horse riding, mountain biking, the list goes on...

But when you want nightlife, Borovets and other options are not far away. If you have a hire car, Sofia is not hard to get to for a day trip, or perhaps Plovdiv or the wonderful Rila Monastery.

What makes this property unique

Mavrud Lodge is on a quiet track towards the top of the village, with a large garden and barns which we have restored and put to use. With easy access to the main road and local amenities, its the perfect place. There's a terrace to sit on by the front door in the summer, and a 'summer kitchen' which is a covered BBQ area and can be used all year round. A barn with two floors and an open-sided barn were fascinating to restore and add character to the place. The bespoke and slightly quirky but very practical spiral oak staircase adds character as do the oak beams in the kitchen.

In winter, the log fires require a little effort to keep going but we always enjoy this aspect of our holidays here, as do our friends. We've even had friends getting competitive over who should tend the fire!
