Luxury Estate, 35 acres of privacy yet near town! Pool, Hot tub, Tennis and Dock

Space 6,000 sq ft
Property type estate

About the property

Estate, 8 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 7.5 Baths, (Sleeps 17-21)

A 35-acre Island Retreat (but you can drive there!) on one MILE of Maine frontage. Stunning views from every window of this 6,000 square foot shingle style home. Designed by noted San Francisco Architect, Brooks Walker and the landscape architects Stroudwater Design, the property is tailored to bring people together to experience the Maine coast in an intimate setting.

The estate is as unique as it is spacious. There is probably not another property as close to Portland (40 min) that is as secluded and private as Dingley Island. Offering three floors, six large bedrooms, four with private baths (plus a large open plan 3rd floor with private bath, with lots of room for Aerobeds and overflow) as well as a carriage house with full amenities. Prepare meals in the gourmet kitchen or enjoy cocktails mixed at the wet bar in the timber frame Great Room with Steinway piano and a towering granite fireplace competing for attention with the all encompassing water views. Dine with your family and friends in a one of a kind dining room nestled between two walls of windows with french doors to bring the outdoors in and a table-side fire perfecting the atmosphere and warming you from the evening sea breeze..

A yachter's dream, there is a 120' floating dock with 10' of deep water at low tide as well as two moorings. A classic 'hurricane hole' of protected anchorage. The dock is sometimes shared with the owner when they are in town and staying at the second house on the vast property. If you are lucky enough to be staying at that time, do not be surprised if your offered a private water tour of the local area.

Watch the seals basking on the rocks from one of two private second floor balconies and be on the lookout for one of the numerous Bald Eagles who frequent the treetops surrounding the house. Explore the 35 acre estate; discovering beautifully landscaped gardens, private coves, swim float, fresh water pond, hot tub, swimming pool, basketball and tennis court, complete with pitching machine. If there are adventurers in your group they may choose to spend a night roughing it in the two story treehouse complete with electricity, kingsize bed, and two daybeds. Walk the numerous private nature trails including a full mile of scenic coastline while looking for local wildlife or paddle the rugged Maine coast while kayaking.

Located on the southern peninsula of Dingley Island, but connected to the mainland via bridge for a short drive to local dining, theaters, galleries, museums and shopping or catch the DownEaster Train to Boston for the day. Nearby Brunswick (according to the Smithsonian Magazine, one of America’s best small towns in 2012) and Bath are only 15 minutes away and historic Portland is only 40 minutes. Although one would wonder why you would ever want to leave.

**NOTE** There is a 2nd home on the estate, not available for rent, where the owner's long retired parents live year round. The two homes are nicely separated, not visible from each other, sharing only the same 3/4 mile long private driveway and the dock, so you might see my family members using the dock to take out our boats (holler and you might get a ride!).

Mark Parker purchased this estate in 1994

Why Mark Parker chose Harpswell

My wife and I were living and working long hours in NYC in 1993 and wanted a weekend getaway haven, kind of like the Hamptons or Martha’s Vineyard … but not filled with other New Yorkers. I grew up in Maine, my wife and I are alumni of Bowdoin College, so we both love Maine and Mainers particularly. We scouted real estate for two years. We wanted a place very easy to get to for a weekend, yet an authentic Maine experience. This property met both of those requirements. There is excellent air service to Portland – it’s less than a one hour flight (35 minutes in the air) from NYC and then a 45 minute drive. So in a couple of hours, suddenly you are not in Manhattan anymore; you are on an ISLAND IN MAINE, with your own private 35 acres and a hard-to-believe mile of your own coast line, complete with a dock, tennis court, and miles of nature trails. We would fly up Friday afternoon and catch a very early flight Monday morning in time to be back to work.

Once you are there, you’re on a very remote-feeling island, surrounded by other islands, but you can drive there (there’s a bridge). The minute we get out of the car, the unmistakable pine and salt water-scented Maine air suddenly envelopes us. I think this might be my favorite part of the whole experience. Instantly, you are really in Maine.

Our property is a narrow peninsula with a long private driveway. It’s the southern approximately 1/3 of beautiful Dingley Island with its dozen or so other mostly year round residents, including our neighbor, noted furniture maker Thos. Moser. Dingley Island is part of the town of Harpswell, which consists partially of some land contiguous with the mainland, but mostly an archipelago of connected (by bridges) and unconnected nearby islands. As a result, Harpswell has about 216 miles of coast, more than any other town in the United States.

What makes this estate unique

Authentic Maine Experience. While there are seasonal residents on Dingley Island and in Harpswell, what we love is that our neighbors are mostly year-round residents, many of them fishermen, so it’s a fun to look out the window and regularly see lobster fisherman and clammers at work. So, it’s the real Maine experience, as opposed to a little more touristy experience you’d likely get if you were to go to the other many beautiful places in Maine like Bar Harbor or Camden. We spend a lot of time on the dock hanging out, swimming or fishing for striped bass (you can catch them right off the dock with a fly rod), exploring the coast with our sailboat, motor boats, or kayaks, and walking the beautiful trails. The trails are a mix of marked coastal and interior trails featuring beautiful water views and deep woods with old growth pine, spruce, cedars, and birches and a deep spongy carpet of lichen, moss, and pine needles.

If we decide to go “off island”, which is pretty rare, we enjoy driving or boating around Harpwell taking in the beautiful scenary, going to the 3-4 lobster restaurants, or hiking the land trust owned trails. Civilization is only 10-12 minutes away at Cook’ Corner with its Starbucks, bookstore, eight-plex movie theatre, supermarket, and hospital. Brunswick and Bath are only another 5 minutes away and Freeport another 10-15 minutes. Brunswick, home of Bowdoin, is a beautiful historic college town is overrepresented with nice restaurants, shops, galleries, wine bars, brew pubs, and services. We regularly go to the weekly farmers’ market on Brunswick’s village green. We are very lucky to have two independent art house movie theatres, the Eveningstar Cinema and Frontier Café (a groovy café, art gallery, exhibition space, and movie theatre), an independent record store, Bull Moose Records, and a great bakery, Wild Oats Bakery. Last year we went to an Edward Hopper exhibit at Bowdoin Art Museum which attracted international attention.

A real gem

  • 5 of 5

Had a wonderful time last week. The house and property are nicer in person than the photos can describe. Lots to do; no one was bored for a moment - including kids, parents and grandparents. The house is open and inviting, and Mark is a friendly, competent and attentive host. Really cant say enough good things about the property. We truly hope to return soon.

Rare amazing property for large group!

  • 5 of 5

Rare to find a house so accommodating for a large group to relax in, with beautiful natural setting and landscaping. Went Kayaking daily and enjoyed jaunts into Brunswick. The house and yard had everything one could want!

Awesome spot for a family vacation

  • 5 of 5

This is a wonderful property. Our family (7 adults and 7 children) takes a “family vacation” every year in a new location and this property landed at the top of the “most favorites” list. The house is very spacious and comfortable (with great architectural details); there is a lot of room for hanging out together, but also wonderful spaces to be alone (the window seats were a huge favorite). There were lots of great outdoor spaces too with incredible views of the Bay. There were more than enough activities on the property to keep everyone occupied. The house is incredibly well stocked-from the kitchen to children’s toys to books and games to sporting equipment. We highly recommend the property and totally echo the other reviewers’ comments.

The most wonderful house in a perfect location that just feels like home

  • 5 of 5

We had 14 people staying very comfortably in this very special house that felt like home from the minute we arrived. The ages ranged from 3 to 91 and everyone was happily entertained. A perfect vacation we can't wait to return.

Incredible house and property!!!

  • 5 of 5

I just spent a long weekend with 16 friends at this beautiful home, and I could not recommend it more. Both the house and property are spectacular and easily accommodated our large group. Even in subzero temperatures we couldn't resist getting out and exploring the island multiple times, to the carriage house and treehouse, to the tennis and basketball courts, all around the rocky shoreline, it is all such beautiful scenery and really feels like your own island.

The house is amazing, super comfortable and large yet still cozy, with an impressive great room with fireplace and grand piano, huge kitchen that was a pleasure to cook in, the whole house well stocked and well decorated, and with incredible views out of every window. The multiple instruments were an added bonus and kept us going for hours.

The property manager was extremely helpful and accommodating, prior to the trip and during our stay, via both email and phone, and really wanted to make sure that we were comfortable and had everything we needed. With the group we had, there was no doubt we were going to have a fun weekend, but this house and property made it something truly special. All of us were sorry to leave and look forward to coming back!

An absolutely beautiful spot and house with space for everyone

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from a week at this beautiful home on Dingley Island in Harpswell, Maine. The vacation was planned around Bowdoin graduation, and we turned the week into a reunion for family and close friends. The house is beautiful and very comfortable, and the grounds are spectacular. The property manager was very helpful both in answering all questions as we planned our trip as well as helping with all our needs while we were there. We were fortunate with weather and used the tennis court, pool, hot tub, kayaks, paddle board and hobie cat. There was something for everyone and plenty of spaces for those who wanted to sneak off to read a book, get a little work done, or contemplate the beauty. We were all sad to leave and hope we can return again one day.
