Sunset Beach Haven - "Its Like Living On A Boat" - Seriously Waterfront!

Bedrooms 2
Space 900 sq ft
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 2 - 4 nights

About the property

Sunset Beach Haven Is A Classic Beach Cabin, Updated With Many Modern Comforts.

Why Choose us? Over fifty, combined five-star reviews in just two years, comfy and dramatic property, stunning location, attentive Hosts. We value you as our Guests! As Top Performers, we have earned Premier Status with Home Away. And also have earned over 150 combined five-star reviews at our sister property, Sandpiper Haven. Experience for yourself what sets us apart from the pack!

Sunset Beach Haven, formerly known as "Fairwinds on West Beach" is proud to announce joining the Mattson Family and Sandpiper Haven, our successful Waterfront Vacation Rental Property just 10 minutes to the south. Sunset Beach Haven, to coin one of our Guests, is "seriously waterfront" - you just can't get much closer than this to the beach and ocean. Any closer and, we’ll,

You’d be on a boat. Located directly on famous West Beach in Oak Harbor and near Coupeville, Sunset Beach Haven greets each day with beautiful views of ships, seals, otters, and occasionally whales playing in the water, and of the snowy peaks of the Olympic Mountains rising in the distance across the waters, and of Admiralty Inlet with 180' plus views out to the sound and mountains. Breathtaking!

To the east, watch the sun rise over the Swantown Lake Wildlife Refuge. Every window has a view of the water (okay, not the bathroom), but the Living Room is west facing to capture the warmth of the afternoon sun on a large private deck in fair weather, or inspire romance watching storm-churned waves while comfortably seated inside.

Evenings can be spent curled up with a book on our NEW matching high quality Macy's microfiber couch and oversized chair, or playing games and doing puzzles with friends and family, or watching a movie on the HDTV. New cable and Wifi (with two dedicated lines) have been added, along with a NEW ROKU and complimentary Netflix and Amazon Prime. We also have a DVD player with modest library (you won't lack for something to watch besides the scenery, if that's what you'd like to do).

Wheel our gas grill out to barbecue inter off season (it’s on the deck during warmer climes), and end the evening with a camp fire in our outdoor fire pit. (Wood is usually available.) And don't forget the SUNSETS - some of the most spectacular ones you could ever imagine. You may prefer an evening out with great dining options in Coupeville, Oak Harbor and beyond.

The house sleeps up to 5 comfortably, 6 only by exception, and generally is best for groups 2-4, with a pillow-top Queen Bed in the Master, and two NEW plush-top twins in the second bedroom and extra bedding and a foam joiner to make these a comfy king. There is a NEW Macys QUEEN sleeper sofa also with a foam topper so it is more comfortable than your average sleeper sofa. We even provide a portable crib and high chair for young ones.

Action seekers may launch their own kayaks and paddle boards to test their skills on the exposed beaches of Whidbey Island's west shore, or make the 10 minute trip to launch in world famous Penn Cove for a calmer experience. Take the opportunity to explore the hiking at Ebey's Landing, and bike the trails of "The Kettles" exploring a landscape scoured by glaciers thousands of years ago. Or, simply stroll the beach for miles at low to mid-tide directly in front of the house. Joseph Whidbey State Park is just a short 10 minute stroll north by foot up the same beach.

The historic waterfront town of Coupeville, can be reached in about 15 minutes by car. Oak Harbor, to the east, is about 5-7 minutes away for major shopping amenities and restaurants. Deception Pass Bridge and State Park are about 15 minutes north. To the south lies Fort Ebey, Fort Casey, Ebey's Landing and the nearby Coupeville Ferry (departing from Keystone Harbor) with service to historic Port Townsend. Greenbank Winery, antiques shops, galleries, and the town of Langley are further afield.

Looking for an especially exciting stay - book during the wintertime and witness first hand the rugged coastline as winter storms sometimes roll in down the Strait of Juan de Fuca sending spray up the new bulkhead. Experience the "Like Living on a boat" firsthand. You will understand why our deck chairs are bungie tied to the deck!

Sister property to Sandpiper Haven (also in Oak Harbor, about 10 minutes away), Sunset Beach Haven has the same owners and managers. Read our reviews on Sandpiper Haven (property no. 395752) and you'll see the commitment we have to providing a memorable vacation experience in a lovely home-away-from-home with stunning views. And don't miss the "about us" on THIS listing, which has tucked away at the bottom 20, five star reviews for Sunset Beach Haven that were from the previous owners. We are the new owners (purchased October, 2015).

Yes, it's like being on a boat perched right at the water's edge, but better with the creature comforts you come to expect in a vacation getaway, and then some!

Note that Sunset Beach Haven has been updated since 2012 with new finishes, appliances, dishes, cookware, and furnishings. And the LR furniture is the new brown Macys. We are having a tough time recreating those shots of the great room. The amazing light and ocean outside have made that challenging so yes, we still have some older photos posted.

We have also added cable and Wifi. Wiring, and plumbing have also been updated and insulation has been added as well. New radiant heaters keep the house comfortable year-round, even in the winter storms.

Sunset Beach Haven is best suited for: families, romantic getaways, couples retreats, girls weekends away, small reunions, great stays when attending a wedding, holiday gatherings, anniversary present for the grandparents, rewards for employees, adventure-seekers, and many more.

Visit our website, see our video, and read our guest comments and reviews and look no further. Stay and Play at Sunset Beach Haven.

Thank you! We appreciate your confidence in choosing our home for your vacation.

Note, although we allow for "instant book", we do contact all Guests after reservations and ask a few questions to make sure the fit is good. If we find out after the fact that some Groups are not a good fit for our property - bringing too many Guests, or pets or previous poor reviews, for example, we may need to cancel the reservation. On rare occasion we may have received a booking on a different listing site that has not updated to Home Away (usually synced several times a day). We try and resolve these issues promptly, within 24 hours of your booking, so any cancellations of your reservation if needed are only made in extreme circumstances. It is our home, after all, and we want to make sure it is a good fit for both parties. Thank you for your understanding.

About Julie and Peter Mattson

We are a family of four and have always loved the out of doors. Here we are in the Kenai Fjords exploring in 2014. Julie grew up outside of Boston, and Pete in Durango, Colorado. We both met out in the Seattle area back in 1994 through our love of kayaking and the out-of-doors. Come and stay at our home and see what we enjoy so much about the Pacific Northwest (PNW), Whidbey Island, and Sunset Beach Haven in particular.

Julie and Peter Mattson purchased this cottage in 2015

Why Julie and Peter Mattson chose Oak Harbor

We love Whidbey Island and have spent years traveling around the Pacific Northwest exploring. We looked at many different communities when considering vacation properties. Whidbey Island was by far the winner, and Sunset Beach Haven is our second vacation property, joining Sandpiper Haven (purchased in 2011). Sunset Beach Haven gives us an opportunity to share the views and exposure of the west side of the island. Whidbey has so much of everything great that the northwest to offer and perfect views of, mountains, water, and beaches, with options for hiking, biking, clamming, kayaking, fishing, and exploring, or just plain kicking back as a family with games, puzzles, a good home-cooked meal, or curling up on the couch with a good book.

What makes this cottage unique

It is the little touches - the well supplied kitchen, the comfortable beds and bedding, and the way that even on the days where you have no desire to step outside, it is possible to find something interesting to read, or play, cook, watch a movie, or just enjoy great conversation and eachother's company. Memories made for a lifetime.

We try to think how we would want to experience a stay, and then provide that for our guests.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Review posted on Home Away/VRBO when Sunset Beach was "Fairwinds on West Beach" (different owners):

"We were fortunate to have chosen this property to stay during our All Sixties Class Reunion. It was perfect and better than we expected. The home was furnished with everything we could ever need or want. So much more comfortable than staying at a hotel. The best was being able to share the beautiful ocean and sunsets with our friends. Looking forward to future stays!! Thank you!!"

We loved the view! We were able to see smith island directly across and the twinkling of lights at night of Victoria

The owners were very accommodating and loved the extra personal touch! They had everything! Binoculars, fishing pole, washer dryer to name a few. We will definitely will return again. Thank you Peter and Julie!!!

You can't get closer to the water than Sunset Beach Haven

  • 4 of 5

Sunset Beach Haven gave us a thoroughly enjoyable and somewhat exciting extended weekend in February. We experienced a year of ocean front living in only 4 days! We had a downpour on Friday. Saturday handed us a winter windstorm (along with a few rain drops and sun). From our dry, warm living room, it looked as if we were actually on a ship (without all the rocking back and forth). We watched while the waves crashed against the shore and over the bulkheads, and jumped when an occasional large wave peppered our picture windows--we were grateful our living quarters were on the second floor. Sunday--snow! It was very cold, but sunny in the afternoon with a slight breeze. Finally, Monday, although cold, couldn't have been more beautiful and sunny when we could finally get out and do more sightseeing without getting wet, freezing or being blown off our feet. Because of the inclement weather, we spent most of our time at the beach house just enjoying the view and appreciating our surroundings. The beach house is clean, dry and well stocked with bath and kitchen supplies and the furniture is comfortable. We would love to come back in the summer and experience some warm weather at the beach, sitting on the deck or roasting marshmallows over the fire pit on the side of the house. We'd love to be able to walk along the beach, which was not walk-able when we were there. Thanks for a great weekend! cjp and ap

Owner's Response: Dear Carolyn, Thanks again for choosing our home and for leaving such a nice and thorough review! You folks were great Guests. Yes, you sure did get some chilly weather. It's not often that Oak Harbor actually gets snow!!! Come back in summertime and stroll the beaches for miles :). All the best - Julie and Peter

A lovely home with a beautiful view!

  • 5 of 5

Couldn't ask for more from a VRBO stay. The hosts were friendly and communicative and provided lots of clear instructions, recommendations, and general hospitality. The home is clean, well stocked, bright and airy, and generally fantastic.

One quick tip--since the waves do crash up onto the windows (though we didn't experience that), the windows were a little salty when we arrived. The supplies are there for a quick window rinse (which took about 5 minutes total) and it made a huge difference in the view! It's worth the time as soon as you get there to rinse those windows!

Overall, only good things to say about Sunset Beach Haven. We highly recommend this one!

Owner's Response: Dear Josh, We are so glad you enjoyed your stay. You both were wonderful Guests and thanks for taking great care of our home. And we are so glad you mentioned the windows!!! We leave instructions and a large squeegee and bucket and outdoor spigot for folks to do just that l, and as you say it only takes 5 minutes and is so worth it. We received criticism by Guests once of how the windows were “dirty” when we’d just cleaned them the day before. If it’s stormy and spraying, that simple step really helps daily during your stay and doesn’t take much effort. The views are too nice to pass it up. Really, like living on a boat! We hope you come again! - Julie and Peter

Lovely Stay

  • 5 of 5

This was a very relaxing place. Beautiful view from every window, including bedrooms. You can hear the waves. During high tide the water is right under you, low tide, there is enough beach to take lovely walks. The owners have placed nice amenities, lotion, dish-soap, coffee and some other things you may need. Beds were clean and comfortable and the living area is comfortable as well. They are also at the ready if you have questions. We will stay there again.
