About this property

Takala Trails Ranch - The Chalet - Nanaimo

Come and escape to the peace and tranquility of our chalet style cabin, nestled in a park like setting of tall Fir trees. Sit and relax on the porch with your morning coffee and enjoy the fresh air and the birds and wildlife as they go about their business. Bring your horse (or use one of ours), mountain bike, or hiking boots and explore the 'great outdoors' that borders our ranch. You will not know you are only minutes away from all the amenities that civilization has to offer you.... restaurants, English style pubs, farmers markets, golf courses, adventure park ziplining to name just a few. The ferry terminals of Departure Bay and Duke Point are a short 20 minute drive from here. The Nanaimo Airport is just 5 minutes away. Many of our guests use our cottage as a Home Base for exploring the rest of Vancouver Island. The beautiful town of Victoria is just a short 1 1/2 hour drive south, and the rugged West Coast town of Tofino and Long Beach is about a 2 1/2 hour drive West.

Our Cabin has 2 comfortable queen-size beds in the loft. A certain amount of dexterity is needed to climb the ladder to the loft. The kitchen is fully equipped with dishes and cooking utensils. There is a propane cooler on the deck and a small fridge that we provide freezer packs that are replaced every other day. There is a butane stove plus a BBQ for cooking. The energy needed for the lights are provided by a generator. There is a woodstove in the cabin for heat on cooler days or evenings. We supply the firewood for this as well as the outdoor firepit. Hot water for showering is propane heated and a battery powered pump for the spray. The adjoining bathroom has a septic system and the flush is manually activated by pouring in a jug of water. Fresh water is provided as needed for drinking and cooking. There are no TV's, computers or other electronic devices or conveniences of home here, so if you want to get away from it all this is the place for you!

Wonderful property
Doug and Mary were wonderful hosts. The cabin itself is perfectly quaint and rustic, and the horses are beautiful!! We enjoyed our time here, and were sad to leave.

Idyllic location but had mouse problem
The only help given by property owners was a mouse trap. I plugged the main hole where pipes entered the cabin with steel wool but frankly don’t think that was my job. Cabin needs an inspection to make sure all access points have been plugged. Caught the mouse after the hole was plugged which concerns me- do they have a nest inside the cabin. Mice were able to climb up gaps between wood cladding walls inside. Mouse poop everywhere including in top shelf dishes. I spent a lot of time trying to clean up and sanitize so my kids didn’t get sick. At end of stay there was still more mouse poop on kitchen counters, top of cutting board resting on microwave, under kitchen sink and cutlery drawer. When I told owners there was mouse problem, they did not come down to clean dishes, cupboards, etc. Shocked me. There also was no water in the solar shower. A dribble came out when landowner oriented me to how to use it at start of stay. Didn’t discover water barrel was empty until the owners were gone on holiday trip.
