Aloha! E komo mai. Nou ka hale. Welcome to our Big Island home, or hale (pronounced HA-LAY). Located in Volcano Village, and just minutes from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, we invite you to make our house your home away from home during your next visit.

Hale Hubner is perfect for friends, couples, and small groups or families that wish to experience the Puna lifestyle at its best. We also offer a wonderful retreat for Kama'aina looking to get away. Comfortably nestled in the lush hapu'u fern and ohia rainforest, you will find our location offers relaxing comfort and privacy all the while keeping you close to the variety nearby attractions the Big Island has to offer.

Our house is a cozy 750 sq ft studio-style custom-built 1 bed/1 bath that sleeps 2-4 people comfortably. The warm pine wood interior naturally juxtaposes the green views of lush vegetation visible from all the large picture windows throughout the house. A spacious sun deck greets you as you exit the house, and provides excellent views of the vibrant stars during the dark evenings. On clear nights, the glow of Kilauea's Halema'uma'u crater is just visible through the tree line!

A master bed area is walled off for your privacy, and a queen-size futon in the main living area folds out to provide a second bed for additional travelers. The main living/sleeping area is located on the second level of the house and is only accessible by stairs; therefore, we are unfortunately not accessible for visitors with disabilities that prevent the climbing of steps. For families looking to stay with us, we prefer there be at least one adult per child, if possible.

We strive to provide a warm and inviting stress-free yet affordable alternative to the big resorts. We hope you like what you see here and choose Hale Hubner for you next visit to the Big Island. Mahalo!

About Matt or Tara Hubner

We are Tara and Matt Hubner. We come from Texas but currently reside in Colorado. However, our hearts reside on the Big Island. We purchased our house in 2011 in hopes that we will live there permanently one day. We try to return as often as possible, but gladly open our home to you when we cannot be there to enjoy it.

Why Matt or Tara Hubner chose Volcano Village

The National Park and the volcanoes of the Big Island hold a special place in our hearts. We love all that the park has to offer in its natural wonders. The town of Volcano is nicely situated adjacent to the park, but there is also so much more to do nearby that it makes for the perfect location to enjoy the Big Island. We love the beaches and the snorkeling/diving all within the distance of a short drive. We love the diverse nature of the people of the area and the aloha spirit that they truly share with those who don't try and bring the mainland go-go-go attitude with them. We love the nearby markets that you can find on a daily basis. We also enjoy the shops and modern amenities of the nearby towns and Hilo. It's hard to beat the cool weather at 4000 ft elevation. So whether you're interested outdoor activities, peace and relaxation, or restaurants and shopping; there's everything one needs within just a quick drive from here. All this plus the fact that there are little to no crowds makes it our favorite place in the world!

What makes this cottage unique

One of our favorite things to do is drive out at night to the Jaggar Museum overlook. It's only a 10-15 minute drive to the crater rim from our house, and the views of the glowing caldera are mesmerizing. We try to go out every night that we can, and often there are people playing music or dancing hula for Madame Pele, and this makes it quite an experience. We've found that on clear nights it is possible to see the glow from Kilauea from our lanai and from the back of our property. We enjoy ordering takeout from some of the nearby restaurants and dining on our lanai under the stars.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Review from TripAdvisor. "Wow! Our stay at Hale Hubner was amazing! It was more then what we expected. Unfortunately we only stayed there for 2 nights, it has everything for a long stay for 2 persons. The location is very private in the forest of Vulcano and the large windows showed this view in every room. The neighbourhood is very friendly with neightbourwatch. We loved everything. The friendly e-mails from the owners and personal touch with pictures of the family made us feel at home. Beautiful interieur with a relaxing sofa. Good wifi. The large balcony including a new gass bbq and easy chairs where very relaxing and convinient. The bed was soft with seperate electric blankets on the matras, for extra heating. Because I'm always cold I turned it on just a half an hour before jumping into bed, my husband liked it just the way it was. We didn't use the woodstove, but I can imagen the use of it is very cosy because it can be cold in the evening and night. The kitchen is fully suplied. If we ever return in the future we will definately stay here again. The town is small, but you have to visit Greg and Joyce with their kids at cafe Ohi'a to enjoy a delicious sandwich for lunch. Their kindness warmed our harts."

Great "home" while visiting Volcano National Park

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay here - close enough to the park for easy trips back and forth. The kitchen is well stocked with pans/utensils - everything needed to make a meal. The lush landscaping has the feel of being in a rainforest! Great meal at the Thai Thai restaurant nearby and Volcano Garden Arts was a great stop also. Wonderful hiking in the park and it was always nice to return "home" to Hale Hubner!

The house is a cute, rustic open space close to Volcano National Park.

  • 4 of 5

The house is a cute, rustic open space close to Volcano National Park. The location was fantastic. The house was very well equipped, except for heat. There is a wood stove in the living/dining area, that we chose not to use for the two nights we were here. Wood was not supplied and the stove had to be cleaned of ashes before we left. Too much to think about. There was an electric heater and electric blankets in the bedroom, but the mornings were cold outside bed. Other than that, it was a perfect place to stay for our amazing visit at Volcano National Park.

Owner's Response: I’m so glad you found almost all about our house great. Making sure our guests stay warm is something I’m obsessed with, especially during the winter months. I try to be very upfront with all guest and potential guests that during the winter months the wood stove can mean the difference between a temperature in the house in the 70s, or even 80s, versus 60s without. So, I’m very glad you bring this up. I would like to offer a quick counter to the point about guests having to clean up all ashes in the wood stove. We do have a note in the house requesting that excess ashes be removed, but we don’t require all ashes to be cleaned. In fact, a wood stove requires a good layer of ash at the bottom for efficiency. I’m sorry if that note was not completely clear, and I’ll revise it for clarity. Thank you for your valuable feedback, and I’m glad that overall you had a great time and enjoyed our home. Mahlo nui loa!

Volcano Hawaii

  • 5 of 5

Love this place! This was our second time staying here and it was just perfect. It’s private, secluded and quiet. All seven days were sunny and hot with the evenings cooling down nicely to sleep. Make sure you go to the Tuk Tuk food truck for lunch or dinner. It’s excellent. I would definitely recommend staying at this most perfect volcano getaway.

We’re always so thrilled to have repeat guests, and to know you enjoy our forte place in the world as much as we do is a great honor. Thank you for giving us your praise again. I certainly hope we’ll hear from you for another visit in the future! Aloha nui!

Secluded cottage close to Kilauea

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at the Hale Hubner-Private Cozy Rain Forest Cottage. We were given very detailed directions to the cottage but a flash light is recommended if you arrive after dark to enter the gate lock number. The cottage is very clean, and the bed is comfortable. We were comfortable in the winter with the electric fireplace and heated mattress pad. The cottage also has a binder full of other information on popular tours, restaurants, and detailed instructions on the TV/cable operations. We highly recommend this cottage to others wanting to tour Kilauea and the botanical garden.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your feedback on the instructions. I work hard to make them as useful as possible, and it helps to have your input to know that they are doing their job well. Thank you for recommending the flashlight for your arrival. Most of us now have lights on our phones that will do the job, but in case future guests don’t, we include this reminder in our driving and arrival instructions as it will help if you arrive after dark. I’m glad that you found the electric heating we provide adequate. We understand that not all guests may be comfortable using the wood stove, so we provide the heated mattress pads, electric fireplace and an oscillating radiant heater. However, I like to often point out that on our coldest nights the wood stove may mean the difference between a house temperature in the 70s versus the 60s without. Thank you for your recommendation, and I hope we hear from you again in the future. Mahalo nui!
