Venture out from Moab around to the Colorado side of the La Sal Mountains, 14 miles from Utah Highway 191 on Utah Route 46, to discover the untrammeled side of the La Sal Mountains and a lodging company and animal sanctuary engulfed in abundant peace and quiet that defies definition.

It is, all at once, a lodge, rental cabins, a massage therapy center, and an animal sanctuary. A most fascinating and beautiful place indeed.

What started as a more traditional tourist oriented lodge in the early 1990s, founded by Lisa Ballantyne and Teague Eskelsen, has become a healing place for humans and for the special needs animals at the sanctuary. The animal sanctuary is only two years old but already is home to several special needs horses, a pack of lovable hounds, and cats in every size, shape and description.

Why Jerry Murdock chose La Sal

This cabin has a full kitchen and living room/dining room areas along with plush sleeping areas. We are centrally located among 12 National Parks and Monuments. This beautiful cabin is secluded, quiet and private, yet is accessible to the highway for easy visits to sites of your choice, or just relax on the covered patio and enjoy the scenery and quiet. The sunrises and sunsets here are spectacular, and the star gazing is out of this world. You are sure to enjoy the cabin and all of its western luxuries.

Thank you,

Jerry and Tina Murdock

What makes this cabin unique

Guestbook comments from the manager

My husband and I stayed 4 nights at the cabin during April and enjoyed it very much. It was equipped with everything we needed. Nice and quiet and away from the crowds. We cooked dinner three nights on the propane bbq on the front porch, very relaxing. We liked the remoteness, yet it was close enough to drive less than an hour to the National Parks for hiking. Out the front door, we were greeted with snow capped mountains--beautiful. We counted 12 deer one early evening munching on some green grass, only feet from the cabin. The staff operating the place were friendly and helpful. Thank you for a pleasant stay.

Charming cabin.

  • 4 of 5

The interior of this cabin was very nice. Well constructed with beautiful pine furniture, wall sconces, etc. Very comfortable, and we really the appreciated that each of the 3 bedrooms had a sink and mirror. Made getting out early each day to hike very easy for the 3 of us. We did a little porch sitting at the end of the day but the high winds precluded some of that and we did not grill. Kitchen was adequately equipped and could use a little updating of worn skillets. We cooked in for most dinners and enjoyed eating with our view of the La Sals. The bathroom shower head shot water over the top of the curtain so we fiddled with that a bit. A replacement would be nice, with an adjustment for those of us who don't care for needle-point showers. Only real glitch we ran into was that we could not get the clothes dryer to work, so ended up just hanging the load up to dry in the desert air. Didn't take long!!! I would recommend this cabin for anyone exploring the Arches and Canyonlands areas. A bit more driving than if you stay in Moab, but the quiet setting at the end of the day was well worth it.

What I Expected for the Most Part

  • 4 of 5

We normally stay in town in Moab, UT and decided to try something different. Proper expectations were set for the most part. It says in the email after booking there wouldn't be any cell service as stated in the listing, but I didn't recall that and went back to look it wasn't there. Not a problem as I discussed with the fam and we decided it wasn't a problem- I didn't like that there wasn't a landline in the cabin (maybe they can't because of location). Wifi is spotty but they tell you upfront.

Cabin is about 25 min from Moab and we were able to find plenty to do around for the nights we were there. The two queen beds were comfortable. I didn't find the twin bed comfortable at all, needs new sheets (just worn) and it was really loud. We had some troubles with the blinds. Kitchen was good- we would have wished for a baking sheet. Cabin was pretty clean. No issues with noise.

My kids played with the dogs that were on the property and loved seeing them.

Overall, good visit. Thanks!

Owner's Response: We appreciate your comments and look forward to your next stay with us! We will review our description of this particular location to ensure no further confusion. On the other hand, most guests enjoy the seclusion of it all with limited cell service, etc... Best wishes!

Magnificently facing the La Sals. All the non-human animals' presence add fabulous vibe.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the cabins at the beginning of September. Very short visit of 3 nights. Arriving to our cabin was so well organized by perfect directions and felt like home away from home, for sure. We found everything we needed to cook, sleep and hang out. Facing south side of La Sal Mountains felt spectacular. Meeting the horses, cats, dogs and the late sheep Steve was a great feeling. Also the late horse Whiskey was someone we met during the stay. Our leaning person Levaughn (spell?) introduce us to all these non-human animals on our first morning. Thanks to her amazing touch with animals. They said a warm welcome to us. She gave us a short tour around including the Lodge. Connected with her instantly. Want to go back and see her and all the friends there. We wanted meet with the owners as well but our limited time did not let this happen. Our last morning, just before we left, they were handling their furry friends last moments before they put them to sleep. We did not want to bother them. Hoping to meet them in our next visit soon. Due to old age and deadly illnesses, these beautiful friends were at the end of their lives .That morning touched me (my husband, and my niece ) very much. It just feels good but more so right to rent a gorgeous place that not only this business to make money but with other intentions - such as this animal sanctuary as well. We did want to live there. Even if we love our home very much, we wanted to make a new home at the cabins.

We look forward to coming back in few weeks!

Warm hugs to all (including non-human animals) to make the place feel good.

Love the location

  • 5 of 5

We had a week of our wonderful stay at your lodge/cabins in La Sal. I think every one of our group had a terrific time. The lodge and cabins are comfortable, the view is peaceful and beautiful. We visited Natural Bridges National Monuments, Canyonlands, Arches, La Sal loop, and still had time to relax at the lodge. I recommend La Sal lodge to friends. Thank you very much,

L. Huynh
