About this property

This 1890's Cottage Has A Panoramic View Of Lake Macatawa and the Holland Harbor

This charming turn of the century cottage has a spectacular view of Lake Macatawa, the Holland Harbor, marinas and all the water activities. These can be enjoyed from the large screened-in front porch that extends across the entire front of the cottage. It is in a resort community of historic cottages established in 1886 and is on both the Michigan and National Historic Registry. As you enter the cottage, you are immediately transported back to the late 1800's resort community atmosphere by the original wood interior and much of the original furniture. The views of Lake Macatawa from the wicker furnished porch, the living room, the dining room and each bedroom further support the feeling of a unique, relaxed, casual and winsome atmosphere.

Of course, modern conveniences including WiFi, TV/cable, DVD, grill, washer and dryer are included for your connectedness, entertainment and convenience.

The owner has just added a new heating and air conditioning system to the cottage so that you can enjoy its charm and comfort no matter what the weather offers. The Four Season opportunities are great for long weekend getaways, family reunions, and holiday celebrations.

Your strolls down the walks and the boardwalks, while enjoying lake views and the 1890's cottage architecture surrounding you, will again be a reminder that you are experiencing a resort community with a rich historic past. The lovely sun, beaches and water of Lake Michigan are only a five minute walk from the cottage. Immediate proximity to bike paths, waterfront walks and steps up Mt. Pisgah provide multiple opportunities for exceptional views and exercise activities.

Historic Cottage with a Lake View
This charming old-world cottage provided a comfortable space to relax and re-connect with family and friends. We particularly loved the view of Lake Macatawa and watched a dingy 'Snipe' regatta with our morning coffee. The short walk to the 'singing sands' is the real reason to come here; magnificent and majestic Lake Michigan.

Great location and host
The house, in all of its 1890’s glory, has an awesome view of the lake! The screened porch is fabulous. The house is nearly all original and virtually unchanged but has new central a/c and heat. Historic house buffs will love this property. Great location for hiking, biking, boating and swimming. The host is incredibly friendly and very promptly responds to any issues you might have (our “issues” were too trivial to mention.)

Cottage Stay at Ottawa Beach
I grew up spending summers at a cottage in Ottawa Beach, so renting Jim's place was a beautiful step back in time! Thoroughly enjoyed the peaceful location. The front porch view is truly magnificent! Jim was available if needed, but everything was perfect, so not even necessary. Would love to stay again - thank you, Jim!

Excellent property manager and great location
The property manager was so courteous and promptly responded to all our questions. And it helped that he lives one house down the street. We loved the house and the location. We can’t wait to get back to the same house again on our next vacation

About the host

Jim and Dee Dee have spent the majority of their lives in the Holland and West Michigan area. Dee Dee taught in the Holland Community Schools for many years prior to her recent retirement. Jim has just retired after his 42 years as a professor at Hope College. While their adult children are no longer living in West Michigan, they have spent their young lives in this community and consider the lake and this historic area their roots and visit as often as possible. Through their extensive travel, Jim and Dee Dee have come to realize that this historic resort area is extraordinary and a wonderful little piece of paradise.

Why they chose this property

Both Dee Dee and Jim grew up spending many of their summers at the Holland State Park beaches. Each time they entered or left the State Park, they noticed the group of historic cottages perched on the bluff, overlooking Lake Macatawa. Those cottages were part of their childhood memories and experiences. So, it was no surprise that when one of the eight cottages became available, they jumped at the opportunity to acquire it.

What makes this property unique

As you walk into the cottage, you will immediately relax and realize you are now on vacation. The pace has slowed and it is time for sitting on the front porch and beginning that book you have been wanting to read. Or maybe, you want to take a short walk to the beach to soak up the sun's rays, splash in the water, take a stroll, fish on the pier, or simply view, paint or take a picture of the iconic Holland Harbor Lighthouse.

You may want to take a bike ride along our bike paths to nearby marinas, the city of Holland, Port Sheldon or even Grand Haven (a 20 mile bike ride away). Maybe a climb up the Mount Pisgah dune steps followed by an ice cream cone at the General Store, a hot dog at Dune Dog's or a hamburger and drink at Ottawa Beach Inn will pique your interest? All of these are within a five minute walk. If you are willing to drive five minutes, the Itty Bitty Bar or DeBoer''s Bakery are also favorites for locals.

For you history buffs, imagine being transported back to the 1890's. From your porch, you would have looked over the Holland Harbor, seen a large hotel, Hotel Ottawa, below you. Steamers full of summer guests were filling the Harbor on their way to the Hotel Ottawa and other resort hotels on the bay. Trains of hotel guests also were arriving from Grand Rapids and areas east.

Learn more about this resort history by taking a leisurely walk down the newly erected boardwalk in front of the cottage. You will encounter several interpretive kiosks including pictures and text outlining the unique history of this resort community, the Ottawa Hotel, Mt. Pisgah, the Pump House and the State Park. Also take an opportunity during the day and in the evening to walk through the historical cottage association, noting the 1890's cottage architecture and the friendliness and charm of the neighborhood.

But however you wish to enjoy the area, you will realize you have found a unique and wonderful spot loaded with history, current activities and relaxation.
