About Dave Anderson

We love the Big Island because of its people and its raw beauty, and of course the dolphins and whales that live here. My wife Gisele and I run Capt. Dave's Dolphin and Whale Safari in Dana Point California. Check out our website to learn more about us. The waters near Kailua Kona are one of the best places in the world to swim with wild dolphins year round and these waters also have incredible humpback whale watching, in season.

Dave Anderson purchased this house in 2004

Why Dave Anderson chose Kailua-Kona

I believe you will love this home, as we do, because of the beautiful view across Lyman's bay, which is considered sacred ground and it will never be developed. And you can look out at the open ocean as well. The pocket doors and windows disappear so you can literally bring the outside inside. It is only 20 feet from the turquoise water, and because it is a newer home it comes with central air, which is actually a surprising rarity in many oceanfront properties in Kona. I believe this home is one of the most beautiful homes on the Big Island. It has a simple unpretentious beauty. I love that we can share this home with others, like we have shared the beautiful dolphins and whales we love with others. Kona has so much to do; restaurants and nightlife, if you are looking to do that, or if you are like us, this is paradise for nature lovers. You will love the giant sea turtles and eels and fish and crabs and birds and geckos and dolphins and whales sighted at various times right from the home. Kona is a great community of people. And we are certain that you will enjoy staying in the center of this very culturally diversified community.

What makes this house unique

Half of all our profits from the rental of this home, after expenses, will go to help Hawaiian people in need, especially children. Go to our website to see some of the people we love and are blessed to have been able to help over the years through our whale watching business.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hi, I've been searching VRBO for a vacation rental for our family. It's out of our price range, but I had to tell you how absolutely beautiful your home is. The photographs of the view are breathtaking! Aloha!

Dream vacation in a dream location!

  • 5 of 5

The house was exactly as described and met all our expectations. The owners were prompt with all communication. The only snafu was my fault, in not letting the owners know before arriving at the house that I wanted to use the A/C; thus the first few hours there were warmer than I wanted. The stove was a bit tricky for me to figure out, but the three millennials with me had it working in no time. I would stay here again in a heartbeat!

Perfect Vacation Spot

  • 5 of 5

The house was awesome and we couldn’t be happier with our choice to stay here. We were there for 7 nights and it was the perfect spot to spend our downtime after a busy day on the Island. The house was comfortable, very clean and fully stocked. There was also some beach chairs, bogey boards and an umbrella for our use on the beach. Dave made sure our stay was comfortable and was very response to our needs. We spent most of our time out on the deck watching surfers in the distance and listening to the waves. I highly recommend this house if you are headed to the Big Island!

Better Than the Pictures

  • 5 of 5

House: Privacy and quiet next to EVERYTHING and house was close to perfect. The experience from the outside is a joy. You have grass with lovely birds, exotic plants and an ocean with waves that will satisfy anyone's lust for crashing surf. You don't have easy access to the water. It's an island rock location, rather than a beach. But it's supremely satisfying. The pictures don't compare to reality. The house was immaculate. My bed linens were first rate. I'm fussy about that. The appliances are tricky. My one caution for this property: try cooking before you purchase expensive ingredients. There are sharp knives if you look. The oven is not reliable for sensitive cooking. The stovetop is not easily regulated either. Master the system by cooking eggs on the stove and baking easy bake oven rolls first to get the feel of it. I had to share that info, but hope it dissuades no one from renting. It's one of the best house I've rented and I rent two or three times a year in the price range. The upstairs bathrooms are first rate and there are clean towels and linens stuffed everywhere in drawers and cabinets. There are no blankets or bathroom rugs, which was odd. Views from two of the three bedrooms are what you pay money for: they are beautiful and the sounds of the surf never stop. The neighbors never bothered me with noise. Tap water was a-okay and laundry appliances are top notch (buy detergent and dryer sheets). The owner charges for AC. I don't blame him. I'd recommend getting the AC started before you arrive with bags and the sweaty effort of getting settled. I'd also ask the owner to text you a picture of the street entrance. It's not easy to see.

Area: the house is maybe two minutes from the Alli stuff. It's a short trip from the doorstep if you want to shop, eat or get a tattoo. The area offers everything a tourist wants. You can rent a boat to take out solo, scuba with tours, snorkel or scuba at night with manta rays or just hit a beach. We did that and hit the luau at the Sheraton. It was fantastic. There is also easy access to the ocean. You can see it to the left from the yard. I collected a few great pieces of coral from the amazing amount of coral that won't seem interesting after you're there five minutes. That beach is covered in coral and lava rocks. Three sea turtles made a visit in my one hour adventure. One parked itself on my foot.

Owner: seemed first rate. He was responsive, fair, inquisitive and easy to do business with.

Owner's Response: Aloha and Thank you for your wonderful review. I am so glad you loved our home so much. It really is a special place. As far as improving, we of course always want to do so, so our oven is going to get looked at next week. It may need a new thermostat. We are so close to water that electronics go quickly from salt air. We are ordering some new bath mats today as well. As far as the view from the bedrooms all three have amazing views of ocean ...the back bedroom upstairs you have to open blinds to see the ocean and it is behind you when laying down in bed but it is beautiful view. However the other two bedrooms are closer to ocean and with the pocket windows. The sound pours in and you feel like you are outside. I agree they are hard to beat. Mahalo and please return when you miss the sounds of ocean. Dave

The property was amazing!

The house is in a perfect spot. One mile from the beach, two miles from the town, and a short walk to Da Poke Shack. The house is clean, well kept, and was the perfect size for three couples.
