Relax in a historic country home in Prince Edward County's beach/ wine district
About Shannon Kyles
I am an architectural historian, professor of architecture, webmistress for ontarioarchitecture.com, and CBC columnist on historic architecture. I rebuilt this house because it is so lovely and I am concerned that our built heritage is being destroyed. This house was part of the Underground Railway as well as being used a a feed store, a hospital and a private home.
Shannon Kyles purchased this Cottage in 2010
Why Shannon Kyles chose Consecon
In June there are dozens or turtles that lay their eggs on the lawn and around the rees and hedges. The pond is full of frogs, toads and dragonflies. There are red winged blackbirds, herons, hummingbirds, and orioles in the nearby trees. The house has the large, generous proportions of a by-gone age. The windows are all original as are the doors, trim and baseboards. The house is stunning, and so is the location.
What makes this Cottage unique
You can cycle to The Grange, Closson Chase, Normand Hardy, Stanner, and many other local wineries. By car these wineries are ten minutes away. The property runs along the edge of the Millennium Trail, which is a 60 kilometer rail trail perfect for cycling and nature walks. Lake Consecon is about 8 kilometers long. The road around the lake is almost 20 kilometres, perfect for a short cycle.

Weekend With Friends
We had a great weekend stay at Gryphon cottage. There were five couples and this property worked perfectly for us since all the bedrooms had en-suite bedrooms. There was lots of space so we weren’t crowed and everyone had their own space. We also liked the outdoor space for playing bocce, mölkky and giant dice Yahtzee. It is a very quiet rural area but close to wineries, towns and other attractions in the area. The bbq needs an update but other than that there was an abundant supply of dishes and cooking utensils. The beds were comfortable, linens and towels were all supplied. The owner Shannon was easy to communicate with and responded quickly to any questions we had. I would stay here again if traveling to the area.
It was great to have you stay. The bar b que is in need of a new element, and this is being done this week. No one had used it in a while, so I didn't know. I had to look up mölkky. It looks really fun! I'll look forward to seeing you again.
This was a great property and huge house! We had 7 ladies for the weekend and had a wonderful experience. Shannon was very easy to deal with and always prompt to respond. The house was clean and on such a beautiful piece of property, surrounded by so much nature right in the heart of PEC. Would definitely stay there again.
I'm so glad the weather was good for you. It was lovely to have you. I'll look forward to seeing you again.
Architectural Gem in The County
I hesitate to say that the Gryphon is a birder’s paradise, as that suggests that there is nothing for others. The total opposite is true. In addition to regular sightings of Baltimore orioles, loons, swans, rose breasted nuthatches, and American goldfinches, Gryphon guests can enjoy an evening chorus of frog sounds from the pond, a lovely view of the lake, beach walks by the nearby sand dunes, visits to local wineries, and the sheer joy of staying in an authentic Regency Cottage that was saved from the wrecking ball by Superhost Shannon Kyles, dismantled piece by piece, and moved almost 300 km from Ancaster, Ontario to a scenic lot on the shores of Lake Consecon. We stayed on the main floor in the Simoorg room and slept soundly in the ‘pineapple’ bed, a lovely four-poster with elaborately carved posts and the most comfortable mattress I have experienced in quite some time! What a nice blend of architectural conservation with all the mod-cons travellers have come to expect in a fine inn.
It was such a pleasure to have you stay. I do hope you will come back again soon. It's nice to have people identifying the birds!!
A Wonderful Interlude
This is a beautiful property and when the young trees mature it will be stunning. Views from both the front and back windows invite you to spend quiet moments of enjoyment. The history of the house and how it came to be in Prince Edward County is such a positive and proactive project undertaken by Shannon, her students, friends and local contractors.
The living room with its efficient yet beautiful fireplace is a wonderful place to relax. The art work is terrific and enhances the atmosphere. I look forward to returning in the warmer weather and using the French doors to go out and sit on the vernanda while sipping a glass of the local wine.
The lovely dining room also has a fine large fireplace and there is room to sit at least eight people around the table. The kitchen is light and airy with a beautiful view of the lake through an avenue of trees. There is much bird life to observe including swans.
The very attractive bedrooms are generous in size and if all the beds were as comfortable as mine, you can look forward to a peaceful night's sleep.
There is a TV room downstairs with one of the biggest screens I have experienced in a house.
We spent a day driving around the county and so enjoyed the many examples of fine Empire Loyalist architecture, the variety of landscape, including beaches and the many wineries.
Altogether it was a wonderful visit and I plan to return again.
A romantic stay in PEC
My husband and I stayed for two nights in Shannon's home and had a 10 out of 10 experience. The house has so much charm and character and had lots of thoughtful touches. All the rooms are a great size and very comfortable. Shannon was a great host and was very accommodating and a great communicator. We definitely would recommend this property to the Home Away community.
It was so nice to meet you and I will look forard to seeeing you again soon.
Present pleasures in a past environment
We had a beautiful stay in this restored Regency cottage - quiet setting, interesting room, and a gracious host who told us all about the house and the area. An easy drive to good places to visit and to eat. Our rooms were spacious and clean and the bathroom was well equipped. We recommend you stay at the Gryphon whenever you visit the area.
Thank you Susan. I am glad you enjoyed your stay and I look forward to seeing you again,
