Relax in a historic country home in Prince Edward County's beach/ wine district
About Shannon Kyles
I am an architectural historian, professor of architecture, webmistress for ontarioarchitecture.com, and CBC columnist on historic architecture. I rebuilt this house because it is so lovely and I am concerned that our built heritage is being destroyed. This house was part of the Underground Railway as well as being used a a feed store, a hospital and a private home.
Shannon Kyles purchased this Cottage in 2010
Why Shannon Kyles chose Consecon
In June there are dozens or turtles that lay their eggs on the lawn and around the rees and hedges. The pond is full of frogs, toads and dragonflies. There are red winged blackbirds, herons, hummingbirds, and orioles in the nearby trees. The house has the large, generous proportions of a by-gone age. The windows are all original as are the doors, trim and baseboards. The house is stunning, and so is the location.
What makes this Cottage unique
You can cycle to The Grange, Closson Chase, Normand Hardy, Stanner, and many other local wineries. By car these wineries are ten minutes away. The property runs along the edge of the Millennium Trail, which is a 60 kilometer rail trail perfect for cycling and nature walks. Lake Consecon is about 8 kilometers long. The road around the lake is almost 20 kilometres, perfect for a short cycle.

Living history in Prince Edward County
We were a group of 9 for a couple of days in August. Gryphon Cottage was perfect. Comfortable beds. Spacious bedrooms. Big wraparound porch. Close to vineyards..
Bring a movie on blue-ray disc and watch it in the lower floor movie room on a gigantic screen!
Really unique place for a family reunion getaway!
What a wonderful way to stay in a very old house that one normally only gets to tour through. We had a family reunion and ranged in age from 66 years to 21 months. We all enjoyed the house with enough rooms where we could congregate comfortably and also get away for some one on one time. There was something for everyone to do - from wineries and breweries to antique shopping, biking, walking and nature exploration. Shannon was great to deal with and made our stay that much more enjoyable. The decks were so wonderful to sit on, especially the side deck with the swing. There is comfortable seating everywhere , which is a big plus for us seniors. I only gave a 4 for cleanliness because some of the small appliances in the kitchen could use a good cleaning. Otherwise, everywhere else was fine. Thank you Shannon for a great time!
Gorgeous Country Property
This property is gorgeous from top to bottom. The birds and butterflies love it as much as we did.
Loved everything about this historic home. We had 8 people staying for a Family Anniversary Celebration. This home fit the bill perfectly! Very large roomy home, quiet surroundings, equipped and furnished very comfortably, beautiful gardens with extensive birds and most important, all the beds were very comfortable! Highly recommend and would stay here again if we have another reunion!
It was lovely to have you stay. I'll look forward to meeting you again.
Lovely regency home with plenty of space for all!
Overall, our stay was very pleasant at the Gryphon. The property is large, quiet and conducive to outdoor games and evening bonfires. The house is large, charming and rustic with lots of space for many guests and interesting architecture throughout. Shannon was very easy to deal with and responded quickly to any requests.
My only suggestion would be an area rug in the basement bedroom to warm up the space since the dark stone floors are a very rustic and a little cool to the touch.
That's a great idea. I'll get one. Thanks. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay and thanks for leaving the house in such a good state.
Weekend With Friends
We had a great weekend stay at Gryphon cottage. There were five couples and this property worked perfectly for us since all the bedrooms had en-suite bedrooms. There was lots of space so we weren’t crowed and everyone had their own space. We also liked the outdoor space for playing bocce, mölkky and giant dice Yahtzee. It is a very quiet rural area but close to wineries, towns and other attractions in the area. The bbq needs an update but other than that there was an abundant supply of dishes and cooking utensils. The beds were comfortable, linens and towels were all supplied. The owner Shannon was easy to communicate with and responded quickly to any questions we had. I would stay here again if traveling to the area.
It was great to have you stay. The bar b que is in need of a new element, and this is being done this week. No one had used it in a while, so I didn't know. I had to look up mölkky. It looks really fun! I'll look forward to seeing you again.
