About the property

Relax in a hitoric country home in Prince Edward County's beach/ wine district.

The Gryphon, a Regency Cottage, is a completely restored historic home nestled into a large garden and natural wildlife preserve. Regency cottages were situated to take advantage of the vistas and gardens belonging to the estate. Each window looks out over a field of wildflowers, a formal garden, a rural farmland, or Lake Consecon. Twelve foot ceilings and antique furniture add to the feeling of old time charm.

Prince Edward County is a mecca for artists, nature lovers and anyone looking for a getaway … for a weekend break or for life.

Renowned for its sailing, fishing and giant sand dunes, The County also offers live theatre, artists studios and galleries, unique regional cuisine and a flourishing wine region.

The perfect place for a getaway – a day trip from Toronto or Ottawa.

About Shannon Kyles

I am an architectural historian, professor of architecture, webmistress for, and CBC columnist on historic architecture. I rebuilt this house because it is so lovely and I am concerned that our built heritage is being destroyed. This house was part of the Underground Railway as well as being used a a feed store, a hospital and a private home.

Shannon Kyles purchased this cottage in 2010

Why Shannon Kyles chose Consecon

In June there are dozens or turtles that lay their eggs on the lawn and around the rees and hedges. The pond is full of frogs, toads and dragonflies. There are red winged blackbirds, herons, hummingbirds, and orioles in the nearby trees. The house has the large, generous proportions of a by-gone age. The windows are all original as are the doors, trim and baseboards. The house is stunning, and so is the location.

What makes this cottage unique

You can cycle to The Grange, Closson Chase, Normand Hardy, Stanner, and many other local wineries. By car these wineries are ten minutes away. The property runs along the edge of the Millennium Trail, which is a 60 kilometer rail trail perfect for cycling and nature walks. Lake Consecon is about 8 kilometers long. The road around the lake is almost 20 kilometres, perfect for a short cycle.

Very spacious and beautifully arranged. Perfect for wine tours by bike.

  • 5 of 5

There has been an enormous amount of care put into this property. The owner was very helpful and accommodating.

The location is perfect for cycling to various wineries, A great mix of exercise and fun for four or five couples. And we found it a joy to return to and celebrate with the purchases.

In the morning it is peaceful and relaxing on the massive back deck

Beautiful house in a beautiful setting!

  • 5 of 5

Everything about our stay was wonderful. Shannon was so kind in all of the preparations to ensure that we had all of the information we needed before our arrival. The house itself is a work of art with each room imparting its own character to the overall ambience. The property it is situated on provides wonderful views with a morning cup of coffee or a glass of wine in the evening. Can't wait to return!

We rented this beautiful home for a family weekend and loved it!

Its location is ideal for exploring all the splendours of PEC. The house is filled with character and authenticity, like the owner, who is extremely friendly! The beds were all clean and comfortable. It was a real pleasure to be together as a family in this exceptional heritage environment. You will enjoy it!

Beautiful vacation spot

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Gryphon over the Christmas holidays with our family and had a truly memorable experience. The house is in a great location and sits on a beautiful property. There were 7 of us and had more than enough room for both our families. The beds were super comfortable and the house had all amenities we could have asked for. The theatre room was a big plus to be able to hang out, watch movies and play games. The period decorations and details in the home make it a special place - but especially love all the updated bathrooms and the master bedroom and bath are gorgeous! I look forward to visiting the Gryphon in the spring or summer this year to experience the property without all the snow!! Shannon is a great host and appreciate her attention to details and her responsiveness when we needed to contact her.

Relaxing and lovely

  • 5 of 5

I have known the proprietress Shannon for more than 15 years and she never ceases to surprise and impress. She has transported and rebuilt a beautiful historic house. We stayed in the South Apartment, complete with a sitting area facing the lake and a small library. Private and quiet enough for our 2 yr. old to sleep while we enjoyed the company of the other guests upstairs in the parlour in front of a crackling fire. Dinner was served in the dining area next to the hearth. The house has soaring ceilings and large windows with expansive views. A stone’s throw from the beaches and wineries. A historic home with modern comforts. A hostess with intimate knowledge of the architecture of the home and the environs. We look forward to returning.
