About this property

Linda's Convent Garden Home 4

This summer home in the most beautiful city of Crete has a rich history and charm!

Highlights
70sqm, 2 bedrooms with air conditioning, 7 Beds (several double and single beds), gallery and interior patio, fireplace, stone floor, idyllic with vine arbor covered courtyard, central, yet peaceful location, 150m to old harbor and town beach for refreshing morning bath as well as a charming village square with numerous taverns

History
Build by the Venetians about 500 years ago as part of a monastery right behind the old port, it was later used by the Turks as a residence. The Turks expand the smaller of the two rooms on the upper floor by a typical wooden oriel. Then 100 years ago, the Turkish inhabitants in this idyllic village atmosphere Splantsia district are replaced by Greek refugees from Smyrna (now Ismir). Our Greek-German family bought the house about 15 years ago in completely desolate condition. We lovingly modernized it and kept the original style, so that the charm of the house is still preserved today.

Equipment
The house has a living space of 70 square meters. On the ground floor a living/kitchen room with a fireplace and a bathroom with a washing machine and hot water boiler. Upstairs are two bedrooms with several single and double beds. Additional space for beds is integrated on the gallery on the upper part of the large bed room. Likewise upstairs the house has a inside patio covered with an vine arbor. The patio has an open shower and space for two more beds, mostly used by us for siesta. Finally the most beautiful room of the house is the courtyard right in front of the house. It is also covered by a vine and bouganvilla arbor. This idyllic courtyard you will leave only just for shopping or for a refreshing bath at the 150m distant city beach 'Koumkapi'.

- You have access to all the rooms and items in the house and you have the house to yourself only. - I dwell in Germany and I am available by mobile phone for all your concerns. However, we have a friend (German lady) who cares about the local issues and needs of you. She also hands out the key and is for your disposal for tips in and around Chania. - The rent is inclusive of electricity and water use. Both are rare in Crete, soo please take care of it. Electricity is produced via an oil power plant (!) in Heraklion and the oil is shipped! What a dramatic waste! Also keep in mind that water is precious on this dry island. - The house is the summer residence of our family, so there are numerous private items. Everything in the house can be used, but please use it with caution and care. - Please us the hot water boiler only for showers. Thus, you should turn the boiler off right after showering. - For doing the dishes, you can heat up the water using the water-heater right next to the sink. - Please feel free using the two bikes in the store room on the right of the main entrance. The keys are in the dresser drawer in the entrance hallway. - Bedding, towels, etc. are in the closet in the large room 1st floor and on the shelves and in the chest on the gallery. Before leaving the house, please put all used textiles in the kitchen. - For final cleaning we charged an extra and binding fee of additional 30 EUR.

Historical house - clean and tidy
This property is clean orderly had great beds and bedding and is in an amazing old neighborhood. It is a bit tricky to find and mapping does not account for the intricacies of the one way streets. I would highly recommend cars rented to access it be small. In chilly weather when the outdoors area isn’t really useful the family area is small. Overall it is exactly as advertised.

Feel the presence of the past
The house is located within the old section of Chaniá where you can get some sense of what life might have been like in previous eras and still enjoy comfortable amenities of modern living. One can relax or read and have meals in a shaded outdoor space, a rarity for the neighborhood where there are many cafés but few green parks to relax. We were happy that Michalis shared his family place with us.

Feel Like a Local in this Wonderfully Renovated, Rustic Home
This was an amazing property, although the word property seems too sterile a way to refer to this personal and unique vacation home. First off, the old city of Chania is amazing: the streets wind through picture book lanes and back alleys that all connect to one another. So although it can feel like a maze, you never hit a dead end. The home itself is rustic, historic, and welcoming. The photos in the listing, although accurate, don't convey the continuity of the space. It was painstakingly restored and thought out in every detail. My 2 daughters (18 and 14) and I were traveling together. I had the one queen size bed and my daughters took the room with the queen and a loft with another queen. I think the loft also had room for more kids with a connected room. There was only one bathroom, but we found it met our needs. The bathroom was downstairs from the bedrooms with a winding staircase, but if you hold onto the railing you should be fine. We didn't have an issue with this. Guylaine is the property manager. She was warm, informative, and available. We appreciated her help. There are two outdoor dining spaces, which are in lieu of a family room per se. We enjoyed dinners and wine in both of the spaces. It's set up to encourage communal meals and the outdoor areas themselves are sublime. It's located in a nice area of the town adjacent to a historic church and square, where a lot of locals live and yet it's not at all disconnected from where the tourist areas are. There are a number of family photos on the walls which tell the story through images a little of the history of the family. I found them interesting and conducive to feel as if you were a part of the narrative. My favorite aspect of the house were the views from the windows. When we went the flowers on the vines were in full bloom and very inviting. Overall this was my favorite place in our few weeks in Greece. The combination of the history, the location, and the space itself made it a relaxing piece of Chania, Crete, and Greece in such a way as to make us feel we were truly experiencing each.

Historic Charm
If you love the feel of history and tradition, you will love this home and its location. The home is a refinished corner of an old monastery and the location is a character alleyway next to an impressive church. The house was clean and comfortable and our host gracious and accommodating. I would stay here again :)

I belong to a Greek - German big fat Greek family. We rent our summer house on our home island of Crete in Greece. It is newly refurbished and is waiting to be rented out by you.
I am looking forward to your inquiries.

Why they chose this property

We bought this house in a complete run-down condition in 1996. Our family comes from a mountain village in crete and now lives in Germany. In order to have a family location close to the sea side as well we decided for Chania. Chania is one of the most beautiful cities in Greece and we fell in love with the neighborhood. I am sure you will do so too.

What makes this property unique

The house and the micro location in old neighborhood of Spantia is just perfect. We sit in the courtyard all day and once in a while we go swimming at the city beach 200m around the corner. It takes us just one minute to the vivid square with restaurants and bars and another 5 min to the old venitian harbour. Still the location is quiet and village like.
