Tranquil Brule River, Nature Lover and Fisherman's Retreat.

Bedrooms 3
Space 1,800 sq ft
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Lodge, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 7-8)

This rare 4-season home sits on 1,000 feet of private river frontage on the Brule river, (Bois Brule, Fr. burnt wood). The Brule river is a famous, spring-fed trout stream flowing north from Upper St. Croix Lake, at the continental divide, into Lake Superior. It is noted for it's natural beauty, quiet serenity and rich history. This rental home is a unique, cozy, architectural gem, filled with charm, nestled inside the Brule River State Forest.

The main area is an open floor plan with a wrap around deck and an area for outdoor dining, overlooking the river. The full kitchen is equipped with appliances and staples. There is satellite TV, Wi-Fi, high speed fiberoptic cable and a DVD player.

There are three bedrooms, including a master suite on the first floor. Two bedrooms and full bath are on the lower floor. Each room has large widows with beautiful views of the river approximately 50' away. The lower level sleeps 4-5 with a double bed and a single in one bedroom, which also includes a sink area, and a second bedroom with two single beds. Both lower bedrooms have doors leading out to a patio.

Nature surrounds this retreat with tranquil serenity and fresh, clean mornings to have your coffee sitting on the deck looking out at the river, or at the dock, watching the fish jumping and eagles soaring overhead.

Don your waders and fish in front of the house, or paddle a canoe upriver to cast a fly in one of the notable lakes, or contact one of the local guides for a fishing experience of a lifetime.

It's a must to take a canoe or kayak from the dock, up or down the gentle flowing Brule river viewing the elegant, old log homes built by original residents from the turn of the last century.

Begin at Stones Bridge and take a leisurely, 4 hour canoe trip, through an uncut natural northern pine forest that was the once the Voyageur's highway to the Mississippi and beyond, via the St. Croix River. The 'trip down from Stones' is dotted with small rapids here and there and passes 'Cedar Island' a stately, turn of the 20th century fishing camp, visited by five past presidents.

Step just outside the back door and take a long leisurely walk, ski or snow shoe, on one of the many nearby hiking trails or just head out into the woods. Or drive to one of the many trail heads on the scenic North Country Trail or Brule State Forest trails.

There are many area lakes. Nearby. Lake Nebagamon has groceries, restaurants, a swimming beech and boat landing. Drive north of Brule township 13 miles to the mouth of the Brule and picnic on the sandy shore of Lake Superior.

This property both beacons you to stop and relax, and be mystified by the awe-inspiring, 300 year old Norway and White pine forest that surrounds you, and it also enlivens you to get out and enjoy some of your favorite outdoor activities in an enchanting place.

About Clague Hodgson

This property has been in the family since it was built by Corrin and Mary Hodgson in 1963. It is a favorite spot, and we enjoy frequent visits and sharing it with others when we are not able to be there.

Clague Hodgson purchased this house in 1963

Why Clague Hodgson chose Lake Nebagamon

The Brule river is one of the most desirable river destinations in the US. It is home to five salmonid species and flows through an uncut natural northern pine forest. It was once also the Voyageur's highway to the Mississippi and beyond, via the St. Croix River. We like the wildlife, natural beauty, and privacy of the property.

What makes this house unique

The quiet serenity, fresh air, natural beauty, wildlife, fishing, and privacy. I first crossed the river in a canoe with my parents in 1963, and we landed and camped on the property where the lodge now is located. We are now in the 4th generation of family at this place.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hello Clague,

I wanted to let you know that my wife and I had a great time and stay at the cabin.…

Until now I have not had the opportunity to stay on the river. You truly have an amazing spot and we could not have been happier with our stay.

Bob stopped in a time or two to check in on everything which was much appreciated….Despite some rain we spent the majority of our time on the river and your cabin was a perfect spot to return to at the end of the day. We truly appreciated everything.

Thanks again!

Getaway : return trip

  • 4 of 5

Went last year in august- came home and Immediately booked 2 weeks this august. We just returned. Love the central location to Duluth- Apostle island seashore, Ashland and with a little streach: Bayfield. The cabin is quite remote, but their are several other cabins on the other side of the river in sight, and canoeists passing by. Wifi is very good. We watched the olympics nightly- reception was great. Last year we never really turned on the TV. Water is pristeen clean 63 to 65 degrees. Canoeing is great. The best canoe needs some TLC soon. We mentioned it to the caretaker and would bet that it will be attended to timely. The semi- dated cabin is really clean, and the caretaker maintains it well. Very peacefull setting. Kitchen and whole property is very well equipped. We were there for the last day of the meteor shower- Cloudy night- otherwise we would have had a nice show. If we don't spend our next summer vacation canoe camping the Namekagan or Fambeau, we will probably return again. Two weeks was so much nicer than one.
