About the property

Escape the city or suburbia to the robust frontier setting of the Blue Ridge Mountains near Charlottesville. Our log cabin is the perfect cure for cabin fever. Enjoy a week or weekend with family and friends in this authentic restored 1880's double log cabin.

Popular for getaway weekends for winery tours (centrally located to area wineries), family reunions, special birthdays, wedding groups/family, guys or gals weekends away, Charlottesville historic sites, UVA reunions, UVA game weekends, Foxfield horse races, Monticello tours, college sports and tour weekends, Frontier Culture Museum, and much more.

Centrally located to area wineries. 6.6 miles to Pippin Hill Vineyards. 10.4 miles to Delfosse Vineyards and Winery. 14 miles to Bold Rock Cidery, Nellysford. 15 miles to Blue Mountain Brewery, Afton. 15 miles to Veritas Vineyard, Afton. 19 miles to Roseland Farm Vineyard, Crozet. 19 miles to Blenheim Vineyards. 21 miles to Jefferson Vineyards. And MORE!

Immerse yourself in the ambiance of yesteryear on 400 mountainside forested acres. Hand hewn chestnut logs, reclaimed wood floors, restored antique stoves, furniture, and claw-foot tubs, - all contribute to the historic atmosphere, while folding glass walls, spacious rooms, central heating and air conditioning, and modern appliances provide the comfort and ease of modern day life.

The Great room features a wood burning stone fireplace, TV / blue Ray DVD with satellite, folding glass doors at both ends so your entertaining can spill out onto the front porch or the back yard. A large comfy sectional sofa has been added (not shown in photos). A long front porch is ample for dining and perfect for swinging on the antique porch swing and relaxing in rocking chairs.

The kitchen has modern appliances, and an antique refrigerator (and an antique wood cook stove for the adventurous sort - though best used for ambiance on a chilly morning while bonding over your morning coffee). The kitchen is arranged as the early kitchens were, with the table in the middle of the room.

An outdoor fire pit provides hours of entertainment for young and not-so-young alike.

This house is made up of two log cabins, one moved up from a lower location on the same mountain, and another moved in from another property, joined together by a great room. There are four bedrooms plus a bunk room, three full baths plus another with sink and tub only.

Sleeping arrangements:

Hand made period quilts cover all beds.

The arrangement is perfect for two families to occupy with semi-privacy.

Check-in 2:00 pm, Check-out 11:00 am

Bedroom 1 (main floor) - 1 queen & 1 double bed with a working antique wood stove for ambiance

Bedroom 2 (main floor) - 1 full & 1 twin bed (direct access to bath)

Bedroom 3 (second floor) - 1 queen & 1 double bed with a working antique wood stove for ambiance

Bunk area (second floor near bedroom three) - 3 twin beds. Kids love this room with its unusual doorway

Bedroom 4 / loft (second floor over kitchen with its own stairway) - 2 double beds and a narrow couch. This is a large room with a private stair. There is no door, but it feels quite private. (This is my favorite room.) and there is an adjoining sink and tub (no toilet). Air mattresses would fit it this room for extra people.

Bathrooms furnished with restored cast-iron sinks and claw-foot tub showers, and modern water-saving toilets.

Bathrooms 1 & 2 - main floor

Bathroom 3 - second floor

Bathroom 4 - second floor with sink and tub only

The joined cabins are both 100+ years old, restored in 2009.

Note that cell phone reception is sometimes sketchy. Verizon nearly always has a signal, especially in the kitchen and porch area, and often all over the house.

We suggest you grocery shop before arrival as the nearest full grocery is 25 minutes away. Kroger in Charlottesville at the intersection of Rt 29 and Rt 250 is the closest full grocery.

Come glimpse the best of life of our early settlers!

About Susan Pierce

We are Virginia natives and our family has lived in the Charlottesville area for several generations.

Susan Pierce purchased this house in 1953

Why Susan Pierce chose Afton

This property was purchased by our Grandfather in 1953 as a working apple orchard. As a local Charlottesville businessman, he wanted to create a country getaway on the mountain. We've made his dream a reality. Our extended family spends holidays and long weekends here also.

What makes this house unique

When you really want to get away from it all, this is the place. This double, restored log cabin is located on 400 acres of forested mountainside. Wildlife abounds; bear, variety of bird species, raccoons, deer, flocks of turkeys. On a clear night the sky is dense with bright stars (UVA conservatory is located close by because light pollution is so low). Once or twice a day you can hear a train whistle far in the distance, to take you back a century. The cabin is centrally located to the area's wineries.

Charlottesville is so close by that in 20 minutes you can be at a UVA football game or University of Virginia graduation, or at the historic mall complete with its outdoor pavilion and live performances. It's the same distance in the other direction to Wintergreen Ski Resort. There are many activities within easy distance along scenic local byways; historic locations such as Thomas Jefferson's Monticello in Charlottesville and the Frontier Culture Museum in Staunton, cultural experiences such as Blackfriar's Shakespeare Theater, outdoor adventures such as tubing and canoeing on the James River and hiking, apple and strawberry picking, Skyline Drive for fall colors, antique stores, wineries, breweries, horse shows, golf, fine dining, and much more!

Great cabin

  • 5 of 5

Huge place and nice property. It has excellent hot water, plenty for our big group. We really enjoyed sitting around the fire pit and visiting wineries and breweries in the area.

Adoring this Heards Mountain Cabin

  • 5 of 5

Had 13 total women up in the mountains to celebrate my 40th Birthday, and couldn't have loved everything about this charming cabin, any more. The bare bones feel of the natural building materials, but the coziness of soft furniture and accessories, made this such a treat. The mountain side surrounding is so peaceful and we got to hear a wood pecker, make s'mores around the fire pit and even took a fun drive up one of the trails. Definitely would love to make it back up sometime! Loved this property!! Thanks again for sharing your awesome cabin with us Susan! ~Jenn

Mountain Solitude

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this beautiful original log cabin set in a rugged mountain forest high above the windy gravel road and long driveway that gets you there. There are many long, kept mountain trails and old mountain roads to roam on the property...plenty of space to walk / hike or run mountain trails without seeing anyone. Silence except for nature. No ambient light at night, beautiful star gazing. We greatly enjoyed fires in the fireplace and kitchen stove ...and outside around the fire pit. Very comfortable sectional couch in the great room with the fireplace and TV; long dining table; wonderful covered porch outside with rocking chairs. Large kitchen with a beautiful cast Iron Stove.... a favorite gathering place for our gang for meals, socializing, games. Multiple private bedrooms / multiple baths. Easy reach to Wintergreen for skiing, or all over for antique shopping, or Charlottesville. We greatly enjoyed the original log cabin experience, and with modern comforts and conveniences. Super responsive and helpful owners. We loved our stay in this cabin.

Our family--6 adults, a 5 year old boy and his 8 month old sister spent Thanksgiving here and it was truly wonderful. Our grandson had so many adventures, diving into the leaves, hide and seek, hiking with his Daddy, playing games and roasting Marshmallows at the fire pit, he didn't want to leave. We all agreed it was the perfect way to spend the holiday.

Ladies Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Perfect for a weekend getaway for 10 ladies. The house has a very long driveway and feels very secluded but in a good way! The house was so charming and perfect size for all of us. The great room was a perfect place to gather and eat, chat, and relax. The bedrooms were very comfortable and there were plenty of sheets, towels, and blankets. Plenty of bathrooms. We used a local company to take us to 3 nearby wineries for the day and the van was able to drive right up to the house. It really was the perfect house to gather!

We were a group of fifteen people including kids and loved our stay. The cabin was extremely clean and met our standards. We had the best time at the cabin, very peaceful and serene.
