Immerse yourself in the ambiance of yesteryear on 400 mountainside forested acres. Hand hewn chestnut logs, reclaimed wood floors, restored antique stoves, furniture, and claw-foot tubs, - all contribute to the historic atmosphere, while folding glass walls, spacious rooms, central heating and air conditioning, and modern appliances provide the comfort and ease of modern day life.

The Great room features a wood burning stone fireplace, TV / blue Ray DVD with satellite, internet access, WIFI IS AVAILABLE. There are folding glass doors at both ends of the great room, so your entertaining can spill out onto the front porch or the back yard. Large comfy sectional sofa, rocking chairs. A long front porch is ample for dining and perfect for swinging on the antique porch swing and relaxing in rocking chairs.

The kitchen has modern appliances; electric range/oven, microwave, two standard drip coffee makers, an antique electric refrigerator, a freezer (plus an antique wood cook stove for the adventurous sort - though best used for ambiance on a cool morning while bonding over your morning coffee). The kitchen is arranged as the early kitchens were, with the table in the middle of the room.

The house is heated and air-conditioned with an electric, forced-air, whole house system. Plus there are a wood-burning fireplace, and three wood-burning stoves for ambiance.

An outdoor fire pit provides hours of entertainment for young and not-so-young alike.

This house is made up of two log cabins, one moved up from a lower location on the same mountain, and another moved in from another property, joined together by a great room into one large historic log cabin. There are four bedrooms plus a bunk room, three full baths plus another with sink and tub only.

Two of the bedrooms and bathrooms are on the main floor. Note that all bathrooms have claw-foot tub/shower combinations, but no handicapped accessible showers. There are 6 landscape steps from the driveway up to the yard, and then two more steps into the house.

Sleeping arrangements:
Hand made period quilts cover all beds.
The arrangement is perfect for two families to occupy with semi-privacy.

Bedroom 1 (main floor) - 1 queen & 1 double bed with a working antique wood stove for ambiance
Bedroom 2 (main floor) - 1 full & 1 twin bed (direct access to bath)
Bedroom 3 (second floor) - 1 queen & 1 double bed with a working antique wood stove for ambiance
Bunk area (second floor near bedroom three) - 3 twin beds. Kids love this room with its unusual doorway
Bedroom 4 / loft (second floor over kitchen with its own stairway) - 2 double beds and a narrow couch. This is a large room with a private stair. There is no door, but it feels quite private (this is my favorite room) and there is an adjoining bathroom. Air mattresses would fit in this room for extra bed options.

Bathrooms furnished with restored cast-iron sinks and claw-foot tub showers, and modern water-saving toilets.
Bathrooms 1 & 2 - main floor
Bathroom 3 - second floor
Bathroom 4 - second floor above kitchen

Wonderful family get away
Susan's place was a perfect place for me to gather with my children, their significant others, and grandchildren. The house was as advertised! it was secluded and quiet and the kitchen came fully appointed with pots, pans, utensils, plates, silverware, you name it. We cooked all our meals at the house and had everything we needed. Thank you Susan for letting us stay in your peaceful, mountain cabin.

Old World Charm w/ Modern Amenities.
The cabin was perfect! All who were with me couldn't stop commenting on its charm and calm. The location is remote, but that is its charm - connecting with family and friends without distractions. The exterior is nature's beauty; and the interior is modern and accommodating without loosing the aesthetics of the primitive yesteryears. We booked this VRBO to accompany our long weekend wine tour itinerary. Excellent! We can honestly say we would not change a thing - other maybe we needed to book a longer stay.

A Hidden Gem!
We booked a two-night stay for weekend getaway. We found the cabin to be the perfect spot to take advantage of all that the region has to offer and a special vacation destination in and of itself. It's a lovely space in perfect harmony with its surroundings. Everything was as advertised and owners were communicative and easy to work with. Highly recommend!

Lovely stay
Thank you for a wonderful weekend in the woods! Despite having rainy weather, we enjoyed ourselves -- the fire was cozy, the walks in the forest made us happy, and we enjoyed the quiet.

Great experience at this modern log cabin
We had a great time with our group of three families. We found the house to be a perfect blend of new and old. It had all of the modern appliances we needed, but we also enjoyed using the woodstove and fireplace. We hiked right from the house on the grounds and our kids were outside the entire weekend. The kitchen layout is definitely from another era, so it was a bit challenging having the sink on its own while cleaning up from larger meals. We didn't mind, but it might bother others. We loved the cabinet full of sheets for all of the beds. It was so nice that we did not need to bring our own linens. All in all a great experience and we are planning to return!

About the host

We are Virginia natives and our family has lived in the Charlottesville area for several generations.

Why they chose this property

This property was purchased by our Grandfather in 1953 as a working apple orchard. As a local Charlottesville businessman, he wanted to create a country getaway on the mountain. We've made his dream a reality by relocating, restoring, and enlarging the original log cabin. Our extended family spends holidays and long weekends here. We also own the next closest house, a 10 minute walk - an attractive timber frame/log house built in 2000, and renovated in 2020. Ask us about it - it's available too!

What makes this property unique

When you really want to get away from it all, this is the place. This double, restored log cabin is located on 400 acres of forested mountainside. Wildlife abounds; bear, variety of bird species, raccoons, deer, bobcats, flocks of turkeys. On a clear night the sky is dense with bright stars (UVA conservatory is located close by because light pollution is so low). Once or twice a day you can hear a train whistle far in the distance, to take you back a century. The cabin is centrally located to the area's wineries.
Charlottesville is so close by that in 20 minutes you can be at a UVA football game or University of Virginia graduation, or at the historic mall complete with its outdoor pavilion and live performances. It's the same distance in the other direction to Wintergreen Ski Resort. There are many activities within easy distance along scenic local byways; historic locations such as Thomas Jefferson's Monticello in Charlottesville and the Frontier Culture Museum in Staunton (not a typical museum, but instead an experiential gem, especially if you have youngsters and teens with you), cultural experiences such as Blackfriar's Shakespeare Theater, Kluge - Ruhe Aboriginal Art Museum, outdoor adventures such as tubing and canoeing on the James River and hiking, apple and strawberry picking, Skyline Drive for fall colors, antique stores, wineries, breweries, horse shows, golf, fine dining, contra dancing, Lock'n Music Festival, Blue Ridge Rock Festival, and much more!
18 miles to the convergence of the southern entrance of Shenandoah National Park’s Skyline Drive, the northern entrance of the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Appalachian Trail, and U. S. Bicycle Route 76. Hike or Bike the newly restored Claudius Crozet Blue Ridge Tunnel one way or out-and back. (Flashlights/headlamps necessary.)
