The House On The Hill is located in Breton Cove, a tiny fishing community on the Cabot Trail. Hidden away in the woods with a 220 metre driveway, it affords total privacy. The house is halfway between Baddeck and Ingonish, making it easy to access golf courses, museums, beaches, hiking trails, and the spectacular scenery of Cape Breton Island.
The Cape Breton Highlands National Park is only 30 minutes away, it has excellent beaches, and great hiking. Wildlife abounds in the park, but it is also present just outside the house. Moose, fox, eagles, and even the occasional black bear, are your neighbours. We ask that you refrain from feeding the wildlife and to remember that they are wild creatures living in the wilderness.
The house sits on a treed hillside with views of the ocean through the foliage. A spacious lawn provides a safe setting for children and barbecues. Little River Harbour is just down the road. Lobster and crab can be bought right off the boats during the seasons. Boating excursions for fishing, sightseeing, whale watching can be arranged locally. There is a swimming beach at Little River harbour popular with the locals and visitors alike. Close by are several artisan shops featuring works in glass, leather, and other mediums. Excellent pottery, iron works sculptures, funky hats, and pewter casts are some of the things you will find. Music is a big part of Cape Breton life and there are Ceilidhs to attend for toe tapping traditional fiddle tunes.
The house features a central atrium stairway with 4 bedrooms (2 Queen beds and 2 Double beds). there is a large 'sunroom' for relaxation and socializing, as well as an interior living room with televison. The open concept kitchen/dining area is large and well appointed with stove and oven, refrigerator, freezer, dishwasher, microwave, coffee maker, dishes, and eating and cooking utensils. There is a breakfast counter with seating, as well as a pine dining room table. A gas barbecue sits outside. WIFI, television with basic cable and Netflix, books, and games are there for your entertainment in the evenings and the occasional rainy day. The bathroom upstairs has a cast iron bathtub with shower. The lower bathroom has a shower as well as washing machine and dryer. The property has walking trails close by, several longer trails are in the area.
The master bedroom is quite large with a queen bed and a sitting area, ample closet space and dresser. The second bedroom also features a queen bed. There is a nook with a desk and bookshelves, and a hanging closet. The third bedroom is small with a sloped ceiling where the double bed is. It's cozy and cute, kids love it. The fourth bedroom is downstairs and also features a double bed. This room, at ground level, is large and pleasant, the bathroom is next to it which makes it perfect for those less mobile. It also holds the water heather and water pressure tank.
The house has a terrace at the front, and a raised deck at the rear, with an additional terrace at the entrance to the sun room. There is ample parking.
This is strictly a NO SMOKING house. In addition, all cleaning products we use are "NO SCENT" in consideration of persons with allergies. We ask that you use our scent free detergent for your wash, and refrain from using scented products or spray scents in our home. NO PETS allowed for allergy relief as well. Smoking is only allowed outdoors with due consideration for forest fire conditions.
We are a retired couple who love sailing and travel. Breton Cove and the surrounding community has been our home since 1996.
Nick Argento and Judy Lark purchased this chateau / country house in 2003
We chose this property because it is a well constructed house with passive solar and other environmental qualities. In addition it is situated in one of the friendliest and most socially varied communities in Cape Breton.
The house features a central atrium which gives it an open concept feel, yet there are numerous nooks and crannies to snuggle in.Original artwork adorn the house. Outside, the thyme lawns are surrounded by birch, spruce, and maples. The long gravel drive curves down to the world famous Cabot Trail. It is centrally located to Cabot Trail attractions and is nearly equidistant to the Cape Breton Highlands National Park and Baddeck.
Our home is a scent free environment for allergy relief.
This was our third year in a row visiting Cape Breton and our third rental home. This house was just perfect for our needs. Very clean and well appointed with all the things you would need to be comfortable. The owners, Nick and Judy were great hosts and wonderful people. Nick is quite the artist with many of his paintings displayed throughout the house. The house is centrally located on the Cabot Trail and a great base to use for sightseeing trips. We’re looking forward to our next trip to the area and would definitely use this house again.
Wonderful location and host. Thank you!
We were here for a week. House is set off the highway nicely, and it is near the geographic center, so you can make trips in both directions. It was a little over 30 minutes to Ingonish, which is where our conference was. Beach was wonderful, and essentially private. Nobody else was there. It would have been good to be able to drive a car down the path to the beach--not clear why we couldn't. Certainly a walkable distance, though. House was clean, lots of room, didn't run out of hot water with 3 adults. The only thing we would have wanted was a fire pit somewhere, to be able to enjoy a fire at night.
The "house on the hill" was as advertised. All the conveniences we needed. We really enjoyed the sun room!
Spent about week here with our family of six (3 adults and 3 kids under 10). It’s very well equipped and clean. We usually cook a lot of meals and found the kitchen to be surprisingly well equipped. Location is great and quite private. The owners are fantastic. Very helpful, and responsive, as they are close by. Would highly recommend this place.
We really enjoyed this clean, well-maintained home. It had everything for cooking and was very quiet. We used it as our base camp for conveniently golfing Bell Bay and the Ingonish "Highlands" course. The accommodation can easily handle 3 couples, or a very large family with its 4 bedrooms and 2 baths.
Beach access is limited, and very rocky at Breton Cove. I highly recommend the 45 minute drive to the incredible Highlands National Park beach. We also golfed the Cliffs and Links course at Inverness, but that is a bit of a drive at 1.75 hours. It is the Island, and one cannot do anything about the curves in the roads!
We would stay here again, definitely.
New in 2017: Archery range just a few minutes away.
