About this property

The Getaway that's Just Far Enough

Private 3 bedroom/2 bathroom vacation rental house along a quiet rural lane on a Christmas tree farm in Hampshire County WV (between Winchester, VA and Cumberland, MD). A good place for mini-reunions (we often have families from the DC/Baltimore area meet up with relatives from places west), a relaxing escape from the hustle-and-bustle, a good base for looking for your own vacation property in the headwaters of the Potomac River/Potomac Highlands.

3 bedrooms and living room sleep sofa sleep 8 (1 queen, 1 double, 2 twins, and queen sleep sofa).
Bath with shower for master bedroom, shared bath with shower/tub for remaining rooms. Linens and towels provided.

Washer & dryer.
Fully equipped kitchen with eat-at counter. Delicious water from the tap! Dining area seats 6 (or can be extended with available card-table and chairs.) Deck table and chairs for 6 with gas grill and peaceful woodsy view. Hammock in the back yard.

Window AC, elec heat & woodstove, WiFi, satellite TV & DVD player, games. TV in master bedroom is on same satellite box as living room TV.

Parking directly in front of house.

Our home is nearby, but across a wide lawn (about a football field's length distance), so handy if needed, but affording plenty of privacy. No other houses are anywhere in sight.

Near Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad (round-trip excursions weekends June-fall with daily rides in October), historic Romney (West Virginia's first town), Fort Edwards Visitor Center (interprets the French and Indian War), Cacapon River & South Branch of Potomac River for canoeing and fishing, Ice Mountain Nature Conservancy Preserve, the Paw Paw Tunnel, 3 Wildlife Management Areas (open for public hunting and fishing), several state parks (Cacapon State Park, Canaan Valley State Park, Lost River State Park) and Smoke Hole Caverns, Seneca Rocks, and Dolly Sods Wilderness Area are easy day trips. Several golf courses are within easy reach.

Rates include 6% Hampshire County Lodging tax.

Cozy cottage
A very cozy cottage, especially with the fire going. It was exactly what was described and the pictures showed. Great view off the deck. Easy check in/out. Not to far from some of the small towns nearby.

About the host

Grew up in Jacksonville, NC, went to Sweet Briar College, then George Washington University, while working in association publishing and living in Washington DC. Since 1985 when we moved here full time, I have done publications consulting and marketing, freelance web and print design, and taught as an adjunct at a nearby community college. This is in addition to raising 4 children (now grown) with my husband, Phil, a retired naval officer, and operating Almost Heavenly Trees and Greenery, a Christmas tree business (we retail in Alexandria, VA). It is a cobbled-together existence that has been interesting as well as satisfying. Offspring are sprinkled around the world, from a son just about to finish the London Business School after the Naval Academy and 6 years active duty; another in San Diego working for a small tech company after finishing 6 years of Naval service after graduating from Duquesne University and NROTC. Our daughter who graduated from WVU is wrapping up a Peace Corps tour in Azerbaijan and plans to teach there for another year, and her twin sister, graduate of Shepherd University, is preparing to become a personal trainer specializing in helping cancer survivors regain their fitness.
I helped found the local arts council (and serve as concerts chair/webmaster/treasurer), chamber of commerce, and visitors bureau, and for 17 years worked for the WV state travel guide (so I know a lot about the area and the state).

Why they chose this property

We moved from downtown Washington, DC, to the glorious hills of West Virginia after building our own home from scratch and starting a Christmas tree farm. We designed and built Just Far Enough Getaway in 1991 for my mother-in-law after she had a stroke, and were blessed to have 12 years with her there. Not wanting to sell or have long-term renters, we decided to expand our network of friends by hosting visitors for short-term stays. We've enjoyed getting to know folks from all sorts of places, including England, Ireland, Germany, Alaska, California, Chile, Alabama, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, North and South Carolina, Florida, Kentucky, Tennesee, and Ohio, all over West Virginia, as well as the DC/MD/VA area. We love meeting new folks (and welcoming return guests). If, however, you want to enjoy your privacy, our house is far enough across the wide lawn to allow you that seclusion, yet close enough if needed.

What makes this property unique

Peaceful, quiet, comfortable--a great place to truly relax. It is 'just far enough' away from the hustle bustle, but close enough to easily take advantage of a multitude of enjoyments--from historic and wonderful natural sites, to hiking, golf, fishing, skiing. Fairs and festivals, live music and theater are often available in the surrounding area. Amble along the rural road with lovely vistas including peach orchards, or wander among the Christmas trees down the hill. Take a nap in the hammock in the back yard or gather with friends and family on the deck for a cookout. We have had many guests who met up here as a mid-way point between far-flung family members or friends (we even had a lady from Alaska bring her mother from Arizona and reunite with a cousin from North Carolina here!) Others have come for a romantic getaway (one guest recently surprised her fiancé for his birthday).
