Awaken to songbirds singing in the majestic 300-year old White Oak, Walnut and Arizona Ash trees just outside Heartland Guesthouse! Open the blinds and step out on the Master Bedroom's private balcony to celebrate the dazzling morning sunrise over the Huachuca Mountains to the east. Toddle downstairs to grind fresh coffee beans for the French press coffee pot and relax in the sunroom or under the trees in our Oak Park while you relish the sights and sounds of Nature -- not traffic, not subways, not honking horns, not bustling cities – but Nature. If this sounds delightful, you’re our kind of Guest!

Located in the high Madrean Oak Grasslands of southern Arizona, at an altitude of nearly 5200 feet, Heartland Guesthouse lies on the Heartland Ranch near the long-ago community of Canelo between the west slope of the Huachuca Mountains and the Canelo Hills. Weather is temperate year-round, with temperatures generally running about 15 degrees cooler than Tucson and 20-25 degrees cooler than Phoenix. Heartland Ranch is a 160-acre former bustling livestock ranch that now quietly awaits our next Guests. Once guardian of cattle, horses, goats, sheep and, yes, alpacas, our “retired” Anatolian Shepherd dog Zena now snoozes peacefully during the days while Bruno, the rescued Lab/Chesapeake retriever mix, faithfully watches over the Ranch, Guesthouse and its people. Zena, by the way, is shameless about being petted and handed treats, so be forewarned. There's a reason we’ve placed a well-stocked 'Pet Treats' jar just inside the Guesthouse door!

The Guesthouse entry leads through an “Arizona room”, known to the rest of the world as a sunroom, which opens to the vaulted great room (the ceiling is 18’ high!) with its cozy wood pellet stove, spacious dining area overlooking the myriad bird feeders just outside the patio, breakfast bar and fully-equipped kitchen with newer electric range, new microwave, full-size refrigerator/freezer, blender, mixer, slow cooker, toaster, rice maker, high-quality cutlery and Corian counters. 'Foodies' ourselves, we have equipped the Guesthouse kitchen with everything a foodie would need, whether staying a week or a month. We even include the spices and cooking oil!

Also on the first floor is a generous bedroom adjacent to the bathroom. This bedroom is furnished with a very comfortable King bed; on request we happily make it into 2 Twin beds. The first-floor bathroom has handi-bars for the safety and convenience of older guests, and we can add armrests to the toilet and a shower seat in the tub on request. Our most recent long-term tenant in the Guesthouse, prior to it becoming a vacation rental, was a gentleman who used a walker for getting around, so we know the lower level of the Guesthouse is very suitable for someone with mild mobility restrictions.

The second-floor master bedroom is large, with a 'VERY comfortable' (to quote our guests) Queen bed, vaulted ceiling, private balcony and ensuite bathroom. Also on the second floor is a loft with office or library set-up including a desk, phone, bookcase and wired or wireless Internet connection to high-speed satellite.

Important note: Due to limitations of the septic system, Heartland Guesthouse is able to accept a maximum of up to 5 adults and 3 children under the age of twelve (a total of 8 persons) for up to a week at a time. Parties of 1-6 guests have no such length-of-stay restrictions. Thank you for your understanding.

As for activities while staying at the Guesthouse, here are just a few:

Birding! Birding! Birding! Year round, we provide a reliable source of fresh water and plentiful food for the myriad species of resident, breeding and migratory birds who visit Heartland Guesthouse and the surrounding magnificent live oak forest. Every Spring, we or our Guests add yet another bird to our Sightings list. Even if you aren't a 'birder', you can't help but enjoy the avian antics that take place just outside the Guesthouse patio and within easy viewing from the dining area.

For folks who are looking for complete and total relaxation in a beautiful location, we have an interesting library of books, CDs and DVDs, that we can augment to your special interests, as well as games, jigsaw puzzles, hiking staffs, golf umbrellas, a National Forest practically right outside your door and, on your return, comfortable seating near the cozy pellet stove or outside on the patio.

A fully-equipped kitchen means you can cook all your meals to your heart’s content or just prepare a quick and easy breakfast before you head out the door to area adventures and excellent dining.

Wineries, shopping, hiking, mountain biking, hunting, fishing, boating, star-gazing, visiting area tourist attractions, birding in one of the world's top birdwatching destinations, trail riding with horses or mountain bikes – these are just a few of the possibilities.

We maintain a Guest Activities Book and brochures with lots of ideas to keep you as occupied as you want to be, and we are happy to provide suggestions on places to visit, eat and enjoy. The activities available here are myriad, but the one thing you are not allowed to be here is bored!

Heartland Ranch, on which Heartland Guesthouse is situated, is rurally located 20 miles south of Sonoita and 15 miles west of Sierra Vista, surrounded on 2 sides by National Forest. A 'traffic jam' here means the raccoons or Montezuma Quail are taking their time crossing the road. State Highway 83 brings you to within 1.5 miles of the Guesthouse; and the graded, gravel road the rest of the way is easily traversed by passenger cars. Fort Huachuca, a US Army fort dating from the days of Cochise and Geronimo, graciously permits US citizens to apply for a 30-day access badge through the Fort to Sierra Vista, so that all the amenities of a city are just 30 minutes away. Sonoita is also 30 minutes away; Patagonia is another 15 minutes farther. Bisbee, Tombstone, Benson, Karchner Caverns, Tubac and the Mission at Tumacacori are all within approximately an hour’s drive away. Tucson and its International Airport, where rental cars may be obtained, is an hour and a half away; and the Guesthouse is 3 hours from Sky Harbor Airport in Phoenix, where airfares are often discounted.

Local phone service is provided year-round at the Guesthouse, and your friends, family and business associates will be able to reach you on a dedicated land line. Because cell service is very spotty in this area, we also provide unlimited long distance calling during our High Season. High Season runs from December 15-April 30 and has a minimum stay of 7 days. The rest of the year, rates by necessity are significantly lower; and we are therefore unable to provide long distance service at no cost. For off-season daily and weekly guests, calling cards will solve the problem; and they are available to be purchased at our cost if you wish. For Off-Season monthly guests, we are happy to pre-arrange unlimited long distance service for a very reasonable $29 per month.

We are proud to say Heartland Guesthouse is clean, clean, clean. If you, like us, have ever stayed in a less-than-clean vacation rental, you know how important this is. We sanitize the linens and towels between guests and the Guesthouse is scrubbed to within an inch of its life before each guest arrives. Because Heartland Guesthouse is maintained as a low-allergen vacation rental, we regretfully do not accept any pets at this time.

We know there are a few cheaper vacation rentals in this general area, but most are more expensive ones. Our Guests tell us that none deliver the amenities and hospitality for the price that Heartland Guesthouse does. Perhaps that's why so many of our Guests are repeat Guests; and they tend to book very, very early in the season to guarantee their preferred dates of stay. Generally, Heartland Guesthouse is nearly fully booked from November through April, so we know we're doing something right! If you are interested in Heartland Guesthouse (and we sincerely hope you are) we encourage you to book as early as possible to guarantee your preferred dates.

We will contact you about 2 weeks before your arrival to find out your particular interests in visiting this area and will tailor the Guesthouse's selection of guide books, activity brochures and maps to your taste. At that time, we will also provide a list of all the supplies we provide for our Guests, so you don't overpack, or overbuy, for your visit.

*Bird watching: This part of southern Arizona is one of the premier bird-watching areas in the world, and Heartland Guesthouse is renowned for the quantity of species of birds we are able to attract. Perhaps it is the majestic 300-year old Arizona White Oak forest just outside the Guesthouse. Perhaps it is the daily attention to the multitude of bird feeders and waterers. Perhaps we're just lucky! But even Audubon administrative staff and seasoned members have raved about the birding just outside the doors of Heartland Guesthouse. Be sure to bring your binoculars!

*Hiking: The Arizona Trail is a short distance away, as well as multiple trails into the Huachuca Mountains from both the east and west sides.

*Horse riding: There are rental stables in Sonoita for guided horseback tours. Or, bring your own horse and ride out from Heartland Ranch! Ask about fees for stall rental.

*Wine tasting: A number of excellent wineries within a 30-minute drive of Heartland Guesthouse are open for wine tasting 3-7 days/week, which is why we have equipped our kitchen for 'foodies' and placed an excellent gas grill in the patio.

*Foodies: If you like to EAT great food, we can recommend some truly magnificent restaurants to you that equal the quality of the best metropolitan restaurants at a fraction of the price. If you like to COOK great food, the kitchen is fully equipped & a high-quality gas barbecue is just outside.
