Albert and Linda Holt moved to the Big Island after deciding they needed something to do after working in Silicon Valley for the past 30 years. A Kona Coffee farm seemed to be just the ticket. Having had vacation rentals in Lake Tahoe and Las Vegas they were excited about being able to share the Kona Coffee farming experience, and the Big Island Hawaii experience with others, so they built a guest residence just for that purpose. Pictured here with the very first roasted and bagged coffee from our first year (2007) crop.
Albert Holt purchased this farmhouse in 2006
Being away from the resorts and tourist hustle and bustle, yet close enough to everything in order to be able to experience the true Hawaii and Aloha.
Panoramic ocean views, 1400 feet above sea level where the air is clean and cool, wild turkeys and chickens, and the occasional pig wandering the property, night time nature sounds, calm no traffic lifestyle and plenty of property to stretch out in.
Dear Albert,
This morning we checked out of the house and were sad to go. We will remember this visit for many reasons:
The house is great and the views are just awesome.
We enjoyed going down the steep narrow path leading to the house, even though the first time we had no idea what to expect.
We even liked the coqui frogs at night.
The geckos were very friendly.
The thunderstorm was the most impressive I've experienced in a very long time.
The Japanese couple living up the road were awesome too. I spoke to them briefly when I met them while walking up the path. I mentioned my daughter getting married in a couple of days and the next day they surprised us all with a beautiful bouquet picked from their garden as a present for my daughter.
So a big mahalo for the experience,
Rob
The house is spacious with all of the amenities one would want. The kitchen is large and fully equipped. We cooked most of our meals and used the gas grill on the deck. Everything worked well. The beds were very comfortable. The view is exceptional and looks down on Kailua and the ocean. Sunsets from the deck were amazing. Our host Albert did an excellent job providing directions to the house, but it would be challenging to find and navigate to in darkness. We also found Albert very available by email and phone. I recommend this house if one wants to be in the Kona district. It is upland from the town of Kailua at 1500 ft so one can enjoy the quiet and charm of living on a coffee farm away from the traffic near the ocean.
It's been our good fortune to spend parts of 7 of the last 8 Canadian winters in Hawaii. Over that time we've stayed on 6 Islands at 17 different properties. Al's place is, without doubt, our favourite. It has become our home away from home, the only property we've found that ticks all the boxes. Location, amenities, cleanliness, comfort, and value, plus a responsive owner who addresses concerns in a timely manner.
Tucked away along the Holualoa Heritage Corridor, a few hundred feet makai of the Mamalahoa Hwy, Al's farm offers secluded tranquility without sacrificing close proximity to necessary convenience and recreational opportunity. Should you be lucky enough to find availability for your travel dates, don't hesitate to book. Looking forward to our seventh stay in 2019.
As lovely as the pictures are, they can't do justice to the experience of staying in this home. We LOVED it.
First off -- the house itself is GORGEOUS. So spacious yet cozy, so clean and modern, so comfortable and beautiful. We had everything we needed, and then some. The bed is sooo comfortable. Looking in every direction when inside the house, you see nothing but beauty. Being "home" was so much more than just having a functional spot as a base. It was such pleasure to spend time in the house.
I looked forward to arriving back home at the end of each day! The traffic, congestion, and busyness of Kailua-Kona is fine..... but then when you're done with that, you take a short drive into the highland rainforest, and you're above it all, looking out at nothing but lush greenery and the endless expanse of ocean. It's incredibly peaceful, and being in the home allows you to soak that in. I've never before wanted to spend as much time in a lodging place as I did on this vacation. It was BEAUTIFUL just to relax on the lanai, gaze out at the trees and the wide-open ocean below, listen to the amazing sounds of all the wildlife around us, and just BE. We loved being just a mile down the road from the adorable artsy village of Holualoa. We loved driving through the woods of the highland. We loved driving past the chickens congregated on the same patch of roadway each morning. And more than anything -- we loved coming "home" at the end of the day. Oh, how I loved this place....
I really wanted to give this property all five stars. It is a beautiful, clean house with an amazing deck and view. It has comfortable furniture and beds. It is in a nice neighborhood conveniently located close to Kona town and the airport, but.......
This property suffers from an owner who does not live on island and has no provision for a local contact number. When we arrived, not one of the three TVs would work. The owner was slow to respond to my calls for this and other concerns and in one instance taking over 9 hours to respond. Since his response came in at dinner time, we mutually set up a time to talk about the ongoing tv problem at 9 o’clock the next morning. That took 2 reminder calls before I finally got a call back at 11am that day. By then we had given up waiting at the house and were on the road. We were told that somebody would come over to the house to fix the living room tv, bring batteries and look into the 2 non-working smoke alarms out of the 3 in the house. They never came. I don’t think we were the problem with the non-working tv as the renter downstairs told us that she never got her tv to work either. We bought batteries for the tv remotes in the bedrooms and since they were never programmed we easily did that and got those to work. For the living room tv we somehow managed to get the source, the sound system and the remote to function for a single instance but when it was turned off we could never get the stars to line up again. It was a complicated system made more difficult because of an old and worn remote that per the owners written directions needed to press the buttons very hard to use. This always left you wondering if the tv got the remotes signal.
I think that this could be a great property if a few simple changes were made such as simplifying the tv system, buying a new remote control, and contracting for a reliable and local property manager. If the owners want to have high end sound system for personal visits, then I suggest that they set that up for the duration of their visit.
We got to this place in the middle of night, almost cannot find it. If he puts an arrow pointing down the steep slope with his #, that would be very helpful. The sheet was not changed and all trash cans were not emptied. We have to wash our sheet and pillow cases because there is only one king bed sheet to fit our bed. Other than this, this is a beautiful place to stay, coffee trees and other fruit trees, walk down the trail, cook the food you like. This house has everything you need to cook. We love this place and want to be here again.
Situated on a private 10 acre working coffee farm the main house has a fantastic view of Kona and the ocean from the hills above town.
PROS: These comments apply to the Main (upper level) House. (This property has two rental units. See below.) Privacy. Views. Nicely furnished. Good supply of local maps and guides. Enclosed parking in a garage (see below). Wild turkeys (the chickens are nowhere to be found). Newer washer dryer (neither of which we used).
CONS, FYI’s, and MISC TIPS: We arrived as darkness was falling and even with Al’s excellent directions, finding the private road / shared driveway and the actual driveway down (and I mean downhill) is a challenge the first time. Although we only found the upper, main house on VRBO and the description appears to imply the lower floor ‘ohana is not rented, the lower smaller unit is rented. We rarely saw and heard the guests in the unit below us, but they do share the washer/dryer and the garage parking. Garage parking, navigation, and driveway is tight and tricky. As long as each unit’s guest park on one side of the garage and all the way in (one side is shared with lawn mowers) it works. I recommend having one person always guide the driver in and out of the garage and up and down the driveway until onto the private drive. The private drive is a one lane, steep downhill. Watch for oncoming traffic (usually a coffee field worker). This is Hawaii and that means lots of bugs and this house is not an exception, but the level is manageable. Supplied kitchen equipment is average, but some of the non-stick pans are overly scratched. The gas range burners need adjustment and stay on high flame regardless of setting (we’ve cooked on gas for 20 years, so it’s not us).
