South Kona Getaway

  • 4 of 5

The cabin (and the rest of the estate) is VERY clean. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the whale cabin and dolphin cabin each have their own bathroom (for some reason I thought I would be sharing a bathroom with the adjacent cabin). I enjoyed watching the geckos and falling asleep to the sounds of the forest. A few items to note - the whale and dolphin cabins are in a very lush part of the estate; prepare for mosquitoes and dampness. Also, the cabins are in somewhat close proximity of each other (you will share the kitchen space), so you may hear your neighbors. If you are looking for a romantic stay - I would recommend the Honu cabin, which is much more secluded and has more sunlight. In all, this cabin is an amazing deal and Brad is a very cool guy. I was in and out all week so we didn't get a chance to catch up until my last day. He's built his farm and estate from the ground up and is passionate about organic farming. He really cares about his guests and their experiences. If you get a chance to sit and chat with him, do so!

Completely perfect

  • 5 of 5

This property is wonderfully secluded, expertly maintained and perfect for lower budget travelers or anyone who is looking for a private retreat and doesn't require a lot of fuss. It's the perfect balance of natural splendor and modern day convenience. My daughter and I stayed in the Whale Cottage and the Dolphin Cottage. Each has a separate bathroom and are connected by walkways/decking that join in a communal outdoor (covered) kitchen. I was perfectly comfortable, despite the lack of AC - the fans and screened windows provided enough air flow. The hot water in the show can be trickly, but follow the instructions and you'll be good. Brad has done an amazing job creating this property and farm over the last several years. The fruit is fresh and delivered to your door - and the macadamia nuts and coffee are a wonderful addition to the experience. It has become one of my favorite places on the whole island and plant to return as often as possible. It's close enough to touristy stuff, if that's your thing, and far enough away if it's not.

Great trip and experience

  • 4 of 5

The setting was rustic and wonderful. The fresh fruit, macadamia nuts, and the overall setting made you feel like you were in a Disney movie in the jungle. The only thing that was a little weird was there weren't screen doors on the main door or the bathroom door. There were some bugs in our suite. This is an excellent cabin, if you are looking for the jungle, outdoor experience.

Wonderful Stay

  • 4 of 5

We had such a good time, we'll be talking about this trip for years to come. I very much appreciated the tour Brad gave us of the estate. He has put so much work into it and his philosophy resonated with me. It was especially fun to be able to pick any of the fruit that was available. I didnt know i liked macadamia nuts so much and i seriously miss the bananas!

We have already recommended this place as a destination! The cottage was clean and inviting with great customer service. Although not turning out to be an issue, I didn't realize the screen windows didn't have glass to close if desired.

Hideaway Is Its Value

  • 5 of 5

The gate says South Kona Coffee Estate and Retreat. This really is a retreat setting. The electric gate swings shut behind you and you're secure in the cultivated jungle setting of South Kona Coffee. Four houses and three cottages are scattered privately throughout the coffee, macademia, papaya, mango, and other flowering and fruit bearing cultivations. Well cared for. Isolated but Secure. Peaceful. If you're looking for Waikiki, it's not. If you're looking for seclusion you've found it.

One note: I stayed in the Honu Cottage for a week. There is a view of the ocean but it's somewhat limited by the foliage. I didn't consider it a negative but wouldn't want anyone to be disappointed, thinking it's going to be a beachfront style view.

Oh, and by the way. The Honu Cottage has a built in sauna that is awesome!
