About Pat or Sally Tilton

We both grew up in Alaska. Pat was 9 years old when his family arrived before statehood in 1956. Sally was 13 years old when her family drove the Alcan in 1967. We raised our two sons in Chugiak and have called it home since 1982. We are both retired now and enjoy working in our studio, hiking, camping, and traveling.

Pat or Sally Tilton purchased this cottage in 1990

Why Pat or Sally Tilton chose Chugiak

The very moment we stepped foot on the Hermitage property in 1990, we knew we wanted to make it our home. This was before we had gone to the backyard and discovered the amazing view of Knik Arm and Mt. Susitna! During the late 80's the housing market in the area was in a severe slump. This property with its special qualities as well as it's special needs had been on the market for two years. We were up for the challenge and fortunately for us were able to obtain the property. Over the years we have continued to make improvements to make it what it is today. It is artistically unique and quaintly comfortable. We enjoy the beauty, serenity, and convenience of its location. The detached 2 story garage has been converted into a live-in art studio. This is where we live and create during the spring, summer, and fall months. During the winter months we move back in to the coziness of the Hermitage Cottage. And sometimes we escape the cold Alaskan winters to travel to South East Asia. Sharing the Hermitage Cottages makes this possible.

What makes this cottage unique

The Hermitage Cottage with its beautiful garden provides a unique blend of options. The main cottage, if only one bedroom is needed can be rented at a lower rate. For families with older children or couples traveling together and sharing expenses, the addition of the small cottage provides extra sleeping accommodations. The backyard with the sound of Peter's Creek and the serene view of Cook Inlet and Mt. Susitna provides privacy with a sense of Alaskan seclusion; Yet the property is conveniently located to amenities and nearby points of interest. The location provides an easy stepping off point for amazing day trips such as a day in the city of Anchorage or the quiet yet charming farming town of Palmer, hiking around Hatcher's Pass and historic Independence Gold Mine, fishing or flight seeing in historic Talkeetna, taking the train or driving to Seward for whale watching or fishing, visiting the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Park near Portage Glacier or traveling to Whittier through the longest tunnel in North America, walking on the Matanuska Glacier, or easy hiking to near-by Thunderbird Falls and Reflection lake, hiking, bicycling, or kayaking at Eklutna lake, or simply enjoying a relaxing day in the privacy of your Homeaway from home.

Great cozy place. Not too far and not too close to the big city.

The most amazing place to stay and feel at home.

  • 5 of 5

Pat and Sally opened their cottages for others to enjoy and believe me, we enjoyed it immensely. Every day that I walked around the yard I saw something that I did not see the day before. In the cottages there are also so many little wonders. Sally was gracious to walk around the gardens with me as I was very interested in the plants native to Alaska seeing as we are from Rhode Island. The cottages were clean beyond belief, the fridge had half and half, condiments, in the freezer were plenty of cold mugs for what you had a thirst for. One night we were going to have steak on the stick one night and were going to buy skewers. No need, if you look in the cupboards you will more than likely find what you need. Sally gave us a pound of the local coffee beans to try or we could have had Folgers. Of course I wanted to try everything Alaska. When we inquired as to places to go and see, they gave us several suggestions. With the cottages being just outside of Anchorage, we were able to relax and stores were all within distance of the cottages. I highly recommend this for anyone that truly wants to experience an Alaska experience. Though, I would say that it is not a place for small children. The stairs inside are steep and with so many artifacts the possibility of something getting destroyed is possible. We found the prices for 6 people to be well below that of any hotel in the tourist trap area. It was so nice to have a washer and dryer to use, so we didn't have to pack many clothes, which left more room for gifts and souvenirs to bring home. I loved that fact that in the morning we could sit around a beautiful kitchen drinking coffee and not have to worry about maid service. It was also so nice to have places to go if I wanted some quiet alone time. If you keep your eyes open there and during your visit to Alaska, you WILL see wildlife. We used the fire pit with wood provided by Pat, if you want to grill outside, they have one of those too. Pat and Sally have done an amazing job in making this a home away from home. I could go on and on, but nothing that I say will be like being there and experience it yourself. Thank you so much for allowing us to enjoy your home and your gardens. Should we come back that way again, I certainly would try to reserve the cottages again.

Pat and Sally are the ultimate host and hostess! They have thought of every detail and items you might need during your stay. This is the first time ever that so much wonderful coffee, food, pantry items were provided during a VRBO stay. Everywhere you look there is something artsy, historical, or just plain beautiful. This was the perfect spot fir my son and I to stay fir our Bucket List trip to Alaska. Thank you so much!!

Charming, comfortable, like being at home. Sally was very gracious and kind when we arrived.

I was kind of sad when I realized we wouldn't be there in the summer because the colors in the promo photo were beautiful. But the colors of fall were gorgeous and being on the cusp of changing weather did not dampen our experience. I never imagined I would ever go to Alaska but so glad we were able to go and stay in this charming home.

WOW - This Place Was Awesome!

  • 5 of 5

The Chugiak Cottage and Guest House were perfect for our party of two couples. The gardens, decor and bluff views far exceeded expectations. The gas fireplaces kept all rooms so warm and comfortable. All the furnishings and beds were super comfortable. Every day we discovered treasures we hadn't seen the day before, both in the house and while exploring the beautiful gardens. As mainlanders, the lush gardens weren't what we expected to find in Alaska. We tend to find places that work for day trips and this was a perfect fit. We cooked breakfast and dinner at the house with ease. The kitchen has anything and everything you would need to prepare and serve almost any meal. The location was just off the highway and convenient to nearby grocery, gas and multiple dining spots. Pat and Sally are excellent hosts/proprietors. Everything you might possibly need is readily available and their preparedness was most evident the night we decided to have a fire in the patio fire pit - wood, kindling and newspapers were close by in a covered woodshed to keep it dry. There were comfortable cushions for the love seats near the fire pit and Pat had pointed out that we even had heavy wool blankets in the guest house porch that we could use for additional warmth. When it came time to go indoors after the fire died down - there was even a filled watering can positioned right where it was needed to douse the ashes. We'd stay here again in a heartbeat!
