About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4-10)

Two story house newly and completely renovated near Montreal in one of the prettiest spots in southwest Quebec, a hudred feet off the road that runs along Lake St. Louis, a widening in the St. Lawrence. Ten seconds to the water (good swimming), superb view of a large marsh via six patio doors at back of house. House set one row back from road, which makes it still more peaceful. Small residence next door (on same property and also owned by me) is occupied by quiet elderly lady. Beautiful wide-plank white maple floors throughout, with stained wood support columns and ceiling beams on main floor (see pictures). Central air-conditioning. A rear corner of the living room ceiling has been removed to give a view to the angled walls of the roof and the mezzanine's natural-wood beams and walls. This opening (protected by a strong see-through railing) bringss light from below to the upper areas of the house and vice versa. The mezzanine (queen bed) is the most beautiful part of the house with its mood-setting natural-wood floor, walls and rafters. There's a toilet and sink here set off by curtains, a desk, a sitting area, and a tv, and the large windows give a fine view of the lake in front (at least in winter, when leaves don't interfere) and of the marsh behind. An immense sense of space on the main floor, the line of six patio doors giving a marsh view marsh from all corners. All-new galley kitchen (stove, fridge, toaster, microwave), and a large glass-top dining table to work on. Three large couches in semicircle face the marsh and make for a pleasant rest or tv-viewing area. A corner by the windows with another glass table for eating breakfast or other activities. An antique pump organ (1880s) in fine shape stands along the far salon wall. Staring at it from the opposite wall is a 1950s status symbol: a large radio console with stereo controls and record player. At the front of the salon pocket french doors lead to a bedroom with double bed, desk, dresser, and tv. Beside it is a small room (size of a large cupboard) for the washer and dryer. Also nearby is a desk with telephone and wireless internet apparatus. Mirror doors adorn the six-foot wide clothing cupboard at the entrance and a ten-foot cupboard/storage area at the opposite end of the house that reflects the marsh view and adds to the sense of space and the pleasing effect of light entering the main living area from multiple angles. Garden well on its way to being done, with flowering plants in front and a band of grass all around house. A six-foot high privacy wall around the sides and front of the property will soon be completed. A cabin beside the house is equally sumptuously finished with natural wood, where persons needing private space can go to read a book, have a snooze, or whatever--(perhaps a good place to send the kids while sanity recovers). When there are no guests, I use it as a study. A huge deck permits barbecuing and dining outside while enjoying the peaceful marsh view--sundown mosquito alert in summer.

The property comes with a stretch of ground along the edge of Lake St. Louis that is shared with a neighbour, so guests can sit there and enjoy the sun, go for a swim, or launch our canoe. The water here is not deep and children can easily play with supervision. The bottom is pebbly so wear sandals or gymshoes to wade in. A small one-story house sits next door just ten feet away (I own it as well) but one does not notice it when inside, and the lady who lives there is quiet. She has a small dog that plays with mine and is pleasant. The large parking area can accomodate up to five vehicles. Montreal downtown is thirty minutes distant if you go during non-rush-hour traffic. Shopping for food, etc is five minutes away in Chateauguay, which has a sprinkling of specialty restaurants. There are excellent French and Italian restaurants in Beauharnois, ten minutes away, where you can also see ocean going ships coming through the locks of the St. Lawrence Seaway. Those vessels follow Lake St. Louis to get to the Atlantic Ocean, or Chicago in the other direction, so there are often one or two in sight when you're by the water near the Lery house. The layout of Lake St. Louis is such that the sun goes down straight across from Lery, and people often gather in the evening at nearby spots to watch. Lery residents often come out for a walk along the Chemin du Lac (the Road of the Lake) to enjoy that special moment. Lery consists of just one main road, and along the water's edge there are few homes, so it is very quiet. Since it's so beautiful here, there are visitors on the weekends and on evenings who drive by to see the sights, but even then it is tolerable. So if you want to install yourself in a charming home with unrivaled atmosphere and warmth, where you'll love relaxing and reading a book after a swim or walk in nature, this would suit you well. Without exception the guests we've had have loved the peaceful setting, the magnificent view of the marsh, the proximity to Lac St.Louis, and the happy contrast of all that with the busy to-and-fro of a visit to Montreal (though that is fun is well). The neighbors make a point of meeting our guests (even those who speak little English) and several during extended stays have been invited into their homes for a meal. So even if you speak no French, you'll find friendly people to help you with whatever. Jacques, one of the neighbours, has put out his ball and basket for youngsters of all ages who like to play at basketball--and he usually offers his kayak to guests--in that and other ways he is one of the local people who make our guests feel most welcome.

Keywords: Comfortably furnished two-story log-siding house in divine setting, with beautiful internal woodwork (including the ceiling) and white maple floors. Beautiful all-wood mezzanine loft/sleeping area; one bedroom downstairs, plus double duvet couch-bed, and a couch that opens into a double bed. Six patio doors and vast deck (barbecue provided) give a breath-taking view of the marsh. Ten seconds out front door to water's edge and swimming and canoeing (we supply the canoe etc.) in Lake St. Louis, a widening in the St. Lawrence. Beautiful sunsets on far side of lake. Quiet, peaceful, and immensely spacious--main floor one large open area with dining, reading, resting areas (three couches make for a cozy tv-watching or reading area and an extra place to sleep. Galley kitchen area in corner--stove, frig, toaster-oven, etc., with lots of top-grade cookware (do tell us what's still missing). One of the most beautiful spots in southwest Quebec, with delicious walks along the lake along the Chemin du Lac ('the road of the lake') , two nice little coffee-and-soup places on a beautiful island ten minutes walk distant, with astounding views of the lake and of Montreal, and fabulous nature trails in a protected nature area. Thirty minutes to downtown Montreal off-rush-hour, but it's so beautiful here you won't go often.

Lac St. Louis (a widening in the St. Lawrence)

City of Chateauguay water-sports centre is a ten-minute walk away on beautiful Lac St. Louis--boat, canoe, etc. rentals, sailing lessons, etc. The Heritage St. Bernard manages a large nature area next to it from St. Bernard Island, where there are nature trails for hiking. There is an apple orchard with public access on the former grounds of the Grey Nuns on the island, whose summer home and meeting center has become a simple hotel. This facility operates a small restaurant near the orchard, and the city has a large theatre for live plays next to it, with a coffee house that is open daily. The protected nature area includes a large wood with walking paths just five minutes away, across a victorian iron bridge that spans the very pretty St. Jean creek, which runs into the marsh that extends behind the house. Many giant herons, white egrets, and other birds. Lake (Lac) St. Jean is a widening in the St. Lawrence, so one sees ocean going boats crossing far off. A gorgeous setting.
