Mahalo for a wonderful stay! We were very active and enjoyed all of East Hawaii. We hiked Kilauea Iki Trail (highly recommend) and Mauna Ulu trail to Pu'u Huluhulu Cone, drove to the end at Chain of Craters then watched the Lava lake glow from the Jagger Museum. Had a great dinner at the Kilauea Lodge. Today we did a helicopter tour w/Safari, Hilo Farmers Market then down to Pahoa & snorkling @ Kapoho Tide Pools (also recommend) then swim at Ahalanui. Pizza from Mike's NY Pizza in Pahoa. Yummy!

PS The house is lovely & beautiful! It made our visit even better. Hope we can come back!

5th Anniversary The Best Getaway Ever

  • 5 of 5

This was an awesome place to stay. The property is easily found off of highway 11, and the managers are easy to reach for confirmation and directions. If you want peace and quiet and time alone with your special someone, this is the place for you. Every morning we were greeted by the sight of wild birds eating from the bird feeder and pheasant wandering around the property. A beautiful yard landscaped to perfection. Cool clean air outside, warm and wonderful decor inside. We were just amazed at how beautifully kept everything was. There's also a hot tub and an outdoor grill should the mood for soak and a steak strike you. My husband and I loved it. The fireplace was wonderful, especially since the weather is so cool up there. Also, the appliances look like new and there is cookware provided. The continental breakfast had so much variety. Fruits, English muffins, waffles with guava jelly and butter were all included, along the best coffee ever! This place was wonderfully stocked. We were just a few miles from a romantic dinner at the Volcano House. This place was a couple's dreams come true. It's great for families as well, since there are two bedrooms along with an extra futon. The owners are extremely nice and helpful. They totally made our stay so comfortable, and since it was our anniversary we got a bottle of champagne to celebrate. We were treated like royalty, and couldn’t ask for more. The house is about 30 minutes out of Hilo, where you can go shopping and eat. It's close enough and yet far enough were you get the comforts of stores and the seclusion of the country. It made our 5th anniversary unforgettable. We would definitely recommend this place to a friend or relative and we will definitely return.

Perfect retreat in the rain forest

  • 5 of 5

Karen is an excellent VRBO owner and I appreciated her attention to detail. Having instructions on how to use the fireplace and how the water catchment system works, for example, were helpful. She even had gifts dropped by to myself and my daughters, so thoughtful! The house had everything we needed for a 3 day, 2 night stay with the Volcano National Park as our focus for our visit. It felt like home away from home for my husband, two daughters, and myself. To top it off the hot tub was very relaxing and therapeutic after a long hike to see active lava flow. The house is a quick drive to the park and the Tuk Tuk Thai food truck is just down the road. Make sure to stop there for lunch! Enjoy!

We have stayed here many times and will always come back to stay with Karen. She is so accommodating to her guests and makes us feel as welcome today as on our first visit many years ago!

Great secluded cottage in the Hawaiian highland

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful two bedroom cottage close enough to everything in Volcano but secluded enough to allow the bird songs to be heard. We loved our time here and didn't want to leave, a sure sign. We will be back, and hope it's soon.

I've stayed at many vacation rentals and I've never had an owner/manager as intrusive. We expected the home to be eclectic based on the photos, but there were other quirks that made our stay just odd. You can't brush your teeth or drink the water from the faucets which seems odd in America. There were many rules posted everywhere about use of kitchen items, TV, fireplace, hot tub. This made it hard to relax and feel "at home". We wouldn't stay again.

Owner's Response: Just a little notation there was nothing said regarding not brushing your teeth with the water from the faucets. A pitcher containing county water & paper cups are placed in the bathroom as an added hospitality amenity. Keep in mind that many of the towns, cities in the Puna area have NO county water and are on a catchment system (rain water), everyone catches their own water. Mainly as a precaution most residents don't drink it, however, showers, laundry, cleaning etc is carried on in much the same manner as most USA cities, it's just a way of life here even though we're part of America. County water is provided in a dispenser. This was also a new experience even for us when we'd first moved to the Big Island from the Island of Oahu. To my knowledge there's nothing posted regarding the TV. Vacation Rentals are an establishment and for the safety of our guests there are instructions regarding the hot tub & the fire place. Much like a hotel Vacation Rentals have friendly reminders for their guests to enjoy themselves and have a pleasant stay. I personally work very hard so that guests feel safe and comfortable.
