About Lori A Backlund

Owners Terry and Lori Backlund have been married since August 2007. Both have had long family histories that tie them to Grand Marais. Terry is co-founder of Sven and Ole's and current owner/broker of Backlund Realty. After a long career with General Motors, Lori finally made her move to Grand Marais.

We both enjoy skiing, tennis, golf and most of all, riding our Harleys.

Why Lori A Backlund chose Grand Marais

Grand Marais has a unique vibe rarely found in a town of this size. Grand Marais places a premium on culture. The community's Arrowhead Center for the Arts hosts performances ranging from locally produced plays to national recording artists. The renowned North House Folk School attracts students from across the country with its curriculum of folk arts and crafts and construction skills. Founded in 1947, the Grand Marais Art Colony is the oldest art colony in the state. The Johnson Heritage post has continuous showings of works by local and regional artists.

Ella's Inn is only two to four blocks from most attractions including great dining, shopping and picturesque harbor views.

The historical significance paired with the location makes Ella's Inn the perfect place to call home while in Grand Marais.

What makes this house unique

The guests at Ella's Inn have access to all amenities of the home. A fully equipped kitchen allows guests to dine in or enjoy fresh morning coffee. Relax and share stories of the day's adventures around the outdoor fire ring while toasting marshmallows.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"I'm so glad I discovered Ella's Inn on VRBO. In the loveliest possible way, it feels like we're Goldilocks and the Three Bears who walked into someone else's house while the owners stepped out for just a moment. Honestly, staying at Ella's Inn is like staying at your second home - even if you didn't realize you had one until you walked in! It is immaculate, whimsical, eclectic, homey and oh-so-complete."

Quaint decor, very clean, convenient walking to downtown, charming,, comfortable

  • 5 of 5

We were a group of 8–singles, married and children. Plenty of bedrooms with handmade quilts on all the beds, clean up to date bathrooms, nicely decorated all throughout, landlords quickly responsive to our needs when contacted, a coffee shop a quick walk down the hill, Kitchen fully equipped, hair dryers in all three bathrooms. Downtown and lakefront within short walking distance. It’s an uphill walk for the return, so some of us with bad knees needed a ride back. We love Grand Marais and really hope to return for another visit, and we loved every minute of our stay at Ella’s Inn.

Fun, relaxing weekend at Ella’s Inn!

  • 5 of 5

We had two families of four and a set of grandparents in our group for a long weekend. Ella’s Inn was perfect! It was very clean and quaint with plenty of room for the 10 of us. We walked to the town and waterfront several times a day. Coffee shop and brewery were easy walks as well, even with a 2.5 yr old without a stroller. We made good use of the grill and campfire pit in the backyard. The kitchen was well stocked which made cooking meals easy. Such a great and relaxing place to have everyone together. Hopefully our stay at Ella’s Inn will become an annual tradition!

Fantastic house and hosts!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Ella's Inn a few weeks ago and couldn't have been happier. Lori was very accommodating and hands-off, all at the same time. The location was perfect for those of us that wanted to go to Lutsen and others that wanted to walk around Grand Marais.

There were a couple "mishaps" on our part (broken planter, missing key) and Lori was amazingly understanding about everything.

If we have the chance to get a bog group of people up to the area again, we would definitely stay at Ella's Inn again

Cozy by Superior!

  • 5 of 5

Past few years, this Artist's getaway, venturing to Grand Marais, Ella's Inn is my go to home away from home! Cozy, comfy, clean, charismatic and walking distance to all the goodies in Grand Marais. The price is fabulously reasonable, which is a gift. The other house guests are always wonderfully fun. Many friendships have started here…Terry and Lori are down to earth right on hosts/inn keepers!

It just don't feel right if I can't stay at the Inn, Ella's Inn!!

Ella's Inn is a winner!

  • 5 of 5

Ella's Inn is a wonderful eclectic immaculate kept Inn! All rooms are spacious with fresh clean linens on the comfy beds and plenty of towels etc. for a house full! Fully stocked kitchen, was a plus! (Incase you want to cook some or all of meals there) It is only a block and 1/2 from town and makes it easy to walk to and from. Never having to use your car. You can sit and enjoy the flowers on the front stoop, or a shady garden on the side. At night if you aren't pooped from site seeing you can sit by a roaring fire in the back yard. The owners Terry and Lori make you feel right at home and don't care that you and your family are loud when playing games at night! I would stay at Ella's again. I had family that stayed in town and they wished they had reserved a room at Ella's. Thank you Lori and Terry for opening up your home to our family. We had a great time!

Cold outside but warm in Ella's Inn.

  • 5 of 5

Seven of us stayed at Ella’s place for the first time at the end of February. We found it charmig, very clean, comfortable and walking distance to town. We would recommmend it and come back!

Clearly outside of their control, but it was about -15 degrees but we had fun anyway.

Owner's Response: Sue, We appreciate your review and realize it takes time to write one! Thank you. Sorry I couldn't make the outside temps any warmer for your group but I'm pleased you enjoyed the house. We do our best to provide a comfortable environment for groups to socialize and rest up for adventures on the North Shore.
