About June Bartel
In l992 I was on my first vacation to Sooke, saw and walked Gordons Beach and fell in love totally. I knew immediately this was the place for me. It felt so right. Two years later on another visit I found this place, bought it immediately and then went back home to Vancouver to sell, pack, and move. I have never looked back. All my friends describe this spot as 'healing, calming, rejuvenating'. Now retired and still enjoying life and people its time to share this bit of paradise. No matter what season, this is the place.
June Bartel purchased this Cottage in 2011
Why June Bartel chose Sooke
I bought my home to relax and retire. Later the seperate cottage was built to allow others the pleasure of a very special place. If you desire activity and adventure its all In the close area. If you desire solitude and peacefulness, thats a given. Come and enjoy and discover..
What makes this Cottage unique
Wow! to the private outdoor shower. It feels so-o-o naughty but nice. The ocean, the sky, the clouds, the waves, the surf, the rainbows, the colors, the marine wildlife, the marine traffic, the fresh fresh air-----and the peace.

I think this property is perfect! We stayed here for a week and had everything we needed, awesome location for adventure, close to lots of artisan shops and amazing scenic beaches. You are right on the water. I spent hours in the Gazebo watching wildlife cruise ships fisherman windsurfers and many other cool stuff on the water.
June gave a great introduction and then let us be. We felt we had complete privacy the entire time. The outdoor shower was great. The charm and ambience of the entire property was perfect. June knows how to garden and decorate. Very peaceful and serene.
We cooked in a lot, the kitchen has everything you could need to make meals.
Probably our favorite thing was Lucy’s visits throughout the day. Such a well behaved and friendly pet. We loved her company.
We look forward to staying again in the future. We had a great time exploring the area. Sookes night market and farmers market were a great treat! Botanical beach was amazing! Be sure to visit all of the beaches between Sooke and Port Renfrew, they are all great!
Few places on earth can give one a sense of peace and majestic contemplation. This is one of them
June is an absolutely wonderful host and her little beach house is a gem that we are glad we found for having a place that with the virtually deserted beach, the pounding waves, and the occasional eagle and no less impressive Lucy the dog as visitors we had seven days of total peace, contemplation and rest. Thank you June and hope to see you again in the future.
Best VRBO rental ever
I can’t sum it up better than my wife did: perfectly peaceful!! I believe this was the most relaxing and restful vacation spot I have ever stayed in. The place was spotlessly clean, had everything necessary (all kitchen items you might need, linens, binoculars, books, WiFi and cable TV, a BBQ, etc.), with the most amazing view imaginable. I found myself moving around between different seats—the couch, the armchair, the dinette, and the chairs in the gazebo—so I could enjoy the slightly different (and ever-changing) perspective from each. The huge windows made the inside feel bright and airy but it still had an amazingly private feel. We loved watching all the sea birds and were lucky enough to watch otters slowly swimming by (although not quite as lucky as the previous guests who saw a humpback whale), as well as an occasional fishing boat and sailboats. June was the perfect hostess, and it always made us laugh when Lucy would appear at the door hoping for a dog treat. The area was wonderful, with many excellent places for eating (many of which close early or aren’t open every day), with two that are worthy of mention—Wild Mountain in Sooke, and Stoked Wood Fired Pizzeria farther along the shore in Shirley (don’t be fooled by the “Entering Shirley” sign, since you don’t enter any sort of town, so keep driving on the main road for a few more miles and you can’t miss the place).
I hope we’ll be able to return the next time I need to relax completely!
June Bartel’s little beach house
Excellent host and a lovely little guesthouse. All amenities were as described in the ad. Cleanliness of the place was exemplary.
We enjoyed our silver anniversary at this little sliver of heaven. We could hear the surf and enjoyed some really colorful sunsets. This was our second time here and was a joy.
The cottage has everything you will need for a romantic and relaxing time.
Beyond our expectations!
Starting with our Friday evening hours long visit by a grey whale!!!, the weekend was magical.
The open and welcome plan, the colours, the wonderful reading options, the softest bedding, the bottle of wine waiting in the fridge... So many thoughtful touches.
We loved our stay and hope to return again soon!
Numerous parks and beaches nearby for strolling and hiking, both easy going and wild and wooly. A wildlife paradise with eagles, whales and more. Windsurfing, kayaking, fishing at your door.
