About this property

Captiva Mermaid Pool House - Beachside of Village Center

Since Ian, the Mermaid House has been totally repaired and had a major update including new kitchen and both baths and even a new pool screen cage. Guests returned on April 8th and were more than happy with the house and grounds. This house has always been one of the most in-demand homes on Captiva and that continues post-Ian. We are ready for your reservation for 2024, as virtually all 2023 weeks are already taken!! And, our photos were newly taken on July 29, 2023!

There is continuing post-Ian progress on Captiva, which fared far better than Sanibel. The Island Store in the village center is open, as is The Mucky Duck. Captiva Cantina, R C Otter's, Captiva Island Pizza, Starbucks, the Old Captiva House at Tween-Waters Resort plus their Shipyard Restaurant, and their all new Crow's Nest Steakhouse with a fabulous view from the new 2nd floor dining room. The Green Flash Restaurant (virtually across the street) reopened Sept 22nd. Shops open include YOLO Rentals, and Beach Stuff and more! It won't be long until other restaurants and shops announce their re-opening plans. The beach looks as good as ever, as the storm brought in extra sand and it has been raked and distributed.

House Description:

Experience the laid-back, easy Captiva Island lifestyle with this classic 2 bedroom, 2 full bath cottage with no stairs to deal with. This is an extremely easy home to entertain children. You'll see why this is perhaps the most popular rental house on Captiva based on rental history. The house just had a new A/C system, all new flooring and interior paint in September 2021. And December 2021 saw the installation of new energy-saving impact windows and full outside painting. Of course, recent hurricane recovery work has repeated some of that previous work.

The Mermaid's private, secluded, 26 ft x 14 ft heated and newly resurfaced pool with paver stone deck is just off the double French doors of the living room. The Mermaid Home may be called a cottage, but this house is as well updated and perhaps better equipped than a new luxury home.

Included is a 42' HDTV, a 6-disc CD player with a large music selection, Bluetooth connection to our 100-watt Onkyo receiver with Bose inside speakers and outside pool speakers. Wireless Comcast cable Internet is in place.

The primary bedroom has a King bed with 32" HDTV and a new master bath with shower. The guest bedroom is twin equipped and has an HDTV with DVD. The living room provides a very comfortable Natuzzi Italian leather queen-size sleeper sofa, The new hallway bath services the guest room and living room guests.

The kitchen is new and fully equipped with ice-making refrigerator, microwave, dishwasher, coffee and espresso machines, and all utensils. The adjacent open dining area has a table for 4 and stools at the kitchen bar for 2 more. A Weber gas grill is outside the kitchen and pool area, with a spare propane tank always available for heavy use. A new washer and dryer are provided in the adjacent laundry room.

Included is a handy beach cart to haul all the beach chairs, umbrellas, cooler, beach toys, and beach towels to the beach

The grounds are covered with many varieties of tropical flowering plants (though replanted and recovering from the storm), the beach is a short 2-4 -minute walk and the docks of the bay are even closer. Captiva's charming village center is a 5-minute walk from the house.

Personally maintained by the owners, this home is one of the very few Captiva rental houses not managed by a management company. We personally supervise and assist our cleaning staff each Saturday. As the last to walk out the door prior to your arrival, we can assure you the Mermaid Home is one of the best-prepared homes on Captiva, both inside and outside. Though we give the personal attention of a private host, we perform as professionals.

Owner/Manager

Please Note: We accept only Saturday to Saturday reservations, as is the standard on Captiva Island. We accept reservations no further than a year in advance, as current guests have the first option to reserve the same week the following year. If the guests do not re-book by 10 am on their departure day, a new reservation request may be accepted.

Mermaid house in January
We had a lovely time despite weather conditions! Even with wind, rain, and cool temperatures we managed to walk, shell, and swim. The house had all the 'things' we needed - beach towels, great music selection, sharp knives, laundry detergent, dishwasher detergent, trash bags. It was perfect for the four of us!

Great stay over New Years!
Our family had a great stay at the Mermaid House over New Years! We visit Captiva annually and this was our first time back since hurricane Ian. The house, pool and grounds are in great shape and are just as depicted in the photos. It is a quick, easy walk over to the beach and the shed is filled with everything you will need for a perfect beach day. Larry was a great host. He went above and beyond by bringing us an item that was missing and communicated about a brief Wifi outage, even before we knew it wasn't working. We highly recommend this cozy Captiva home!

Great vacation!
We enjoyed our stay. The location was great for walking to restaurants and to the beach. It was very comfortable for my husband, myself and our two girls who loved all the mermaid stuff. Pool was fun!

An Amazing Home
I traveled with my husband and 86 year old mom. We have been coming to Sanibel/Captiva for 30+ years and have normally stayed on Sanibel. Due to Hurricane Ian, we stayed here and LOVED it. We wanted to come and support the businesses that were open - shopping and dining. The home is charming, cozy and spotlessly clean. While we did not cook, the home is equipped with everything needed to make a great meal. The decor is lovely. The pool/outdoor area was great. You could enjoy sitting in the sun if you wanted to get that suntan, or enjoy the screened in pool area which kept the sun to a minimum. The pool was a great temperature. This home was also great for my mom because she has some mobility issues and with only one small step up, it was easy for her to maneuver. Larry, the owner, was also a pleasure to deal with. Quick to respond to any questions you may have. We were fortunate enough to meet him on our last day. We will be back!

I have been in the Captiva vacation home rental business since 1998 and personally maintain and manage our properties, and now Debbie, my wife as of November 2017, is with me to help. The Mermaid House was my first, and we've kept it fresh and always doing something new to please guests every year. Debbie is now my partner with this house and our Real Estate business. We're the last to leave the house before you arrive, so we know it is prepared perfectly for your arrival. Call us at 239.898.8789

Why they chose this property

This is one of the few remaining classic Captiva cottage style houses offering the charm of 'Olde Florida', but with all the continuous updates and conveniences of newer homes. It is one of the last ground level homes built (1976), as all homes built from 1978 required the living area to be built on pilings requiring stairs to enter. It may have the record for popularity based on rental history, as it has less than a handful of unrented weeks in recent years, perhaps making it the most popular rental house on Captiva!.

What makes this property unique

The pool on the same level of the house with no stairs to deal with make entertaining all family members quite easy. Further, the location on a small, quiet street is close to beach, bay, Chapel by the Sea, Captiva Library and the village center with an easy walk to all. Ramps are available to get wheelchairs up the 2 steps to the house from ground level.
