About Marcia Lacey

Ken retired from Northwest Airlines and we decided to build our house on property that has been in the family since 1963. And yes we built it ourselves! We love the outdoors and especially love living on Lake Superior. We love hunting, fishing, hiking, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. I have trained dogs all my life and have one Golden Retreiver. Charlie is a 4 year old white golden. He loves all the people who stay in the Cabin. We have made many lasting friends. This is the only cottage on our property. We love to share our little 'piece of heaven'

Marcia Lacey purchased this cottage in 2002

Why Marcia Lacey chose Hovland

When we retired up north, We wanted something to do, so we brought in a little 14 by 16 cottage to rent. We have so much fun meeting all the people who visit. When we built our home here in Hovland, we decided we had enough room to share our 'little piece of heaven'. It is a safe place for the dogs to run and have fun and not worry about busy roads. Providing a vacation rental on Lake Superior is like having a place on a small ocean.

What makes this cottage unique

The cottage is private. It is just like having your own cozy cottage on Lake Superior. Lake Superior is different everyday. The Flute Reed River is a great river to hike or just cool off. The cottage is private but close enough to get map information or a spice you are missing!

Guestbook comments from the owner

The Nelsons' from Good Thunder plus Samantha & Reggy, our Golden Retrievers, arrived on Monday to very foggy and cool conditions. However, the next few days were amazing. One morning we traveled to Grand Portage State Park and the Falls were amazing as was the double rainbow surrounding them. The cabin again so cozy and our dogs, plus Charlie & Rusty spent lots of time in the water. We are back in the middle of July so rest up Charlie because Reggy will try" to run you ragged!

Loving it!

  • 5 of 5

This is a quaint, cozy cottage right on the Lake. Very clean and comfortable. We stayed 2 nights and wished it was 5! We (my husband, 3 yo daughter and I) fell in love with the resident dog, Charlie, and visiting dogs. The owner, Marsha, was very sweet and took the time to chat with us about the area. We were able to feed chipmunks out of our hands! We loved this gem of a spot. Thanks Marsha!!

I had a wonderful time here! I loved hearing the waves crashing on the shore and watching the chickadees eat from the bird feeders. Thank you for everything Marcia! This was just what I needed for a relaxing weekend!

Chicago Bay Hideway, Hovland, MN

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week in August 2017 at the 'cozy cottage on the shore'!! It was really the best week we have spent on the North Shore in many years. The cabin is private, steps from the shoreline which is rocky, but not huge boulders - driftwood paradise! The fire pit is next to the lake and has a beautiful view of Chicago Bay, the 'old' pier and out across the lake. The deck is large and we ate most meals, snacks out on the deck because the birds would come to the feeders and showed no fear of us sitting so close. The chipmunks were great entertainment, they would come up on the deck and look at us like 'who on earth are you?' Our Welsh Corgi-terrier would chase the chippies for hours of course he never caught one, but both the chippie and Carson enjoyed the exercise. Charlie, the beautiful lab was the perfect host for our dogs they all played and ran around the yard enjoying their freedom. I would recommend the cottage for anyone who wants a 'time away from it all', quiet, with plenty of time for yourself and recharging your batteries. The beaches nearby are wonderful for hunting agates, sea glass, driftwood, swimming (in August/September). The Arrowhead Trail is right across the road and we drove that twice up to Shoe Lake Road and then to Greenwood Lake Road and out to the Gunflint. Then we drove up to Chik-Wauk to relive some of the history of the area, keeping an eye lookout for moose/wolves or other animals. We had dinner two nights at the Trail Center and it was the best. We also ate two nights at The Sisters in Grand Marais - the best Whitefish on the shore, reasonable and plenty of it with two fillets, your choice of sides for $19.00 it is not to be missed. We ate skizzles from the Donut Shop and will be picking some up on our way out of town today. Look at the pictures closely so you understand this is a small, but perfectly fitted with everything one would need. The owner, Marcia, is a gracious host and always ready to recommend a spot to enjoy. See you next August!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your very kind review. I really enjoyed meeting you. Carson was so cute. It was fun to hear some of the history on this area that I did not know. Yes the cabin is small and like you said I try to make it very cozy. It really does have everything you need. I look forward to seeing you next year and hearing more stories!! Marcia Lacery

Wonderful Small Cottage on Lakeshore

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I really loved this cottage, and we wished we could have stayed later. It is small (essentially one room), but it has everything you need. The shower is warm and the bed comfortable. The real star is the lake, though. The cottage is perhaps 25 ft off the lakeshore, where there is a nice fire ring and plenty of firewood. We fell asleep to the sound of Lake Superior's waves.

The location of this cozy, quirky cabin is fantastic!

  • 4 of 5

You are only steps away from the rocky beach of Lake Superior with a fire pit and lovely views. The sound of the waves will lull you to sleep each nite. The local Market/cafe is a short drive/walk if you need groceries or a delicious sandwich or pizza. We were close to Grand Marais and other sights of interest. we found the cabin clean, comfortable and well stocked with cooking utensils. On rainy days we were glad to have the crock pot as the gorgeous gas grill is located out on the deck. We loved using the screen house as an extra room for meals and relaxing, as the cabin is small. Took the two of us a little time to figure out how to manage showering routines and staying organized in the cozy space however our 7 nite stay flew by and was very enjoyable. The owner, who lives next door, was respectful of our privacy yet very friendly and responsive.......and her dog, Charlie is great when he comes over to visit.

Privacy in the privy

  • 3 of 5

Truly a 1 room cottage. Could use some updating. Because this was rated so highly, I neglected to read some of the details, including there is no "bathroom". There was a toilet in a tiny corner closet of the room with a shower curtain for a door. Not much for privacy. The setting was beautiful though - right on the lake as promised. The weather turned rainy so we ended up leaving a day early. We didn't think it was a good value for the money.

Owner's Response: I am so sorry this was not a good fit for you. However on the VRBO website there are pictures of the inside of my cabin that shows everything. It even shows the curtain for the toilet and the shower. If you look at cabins right on the shore of Lake Superior and a registered trout stream, you will find that I am very reasonable. My sight also shows that I am dog friendly for free. I have been booked before I open for 6 straight years. I hope you will be able to find something more suitable for you. Thank you for your comments. Marcia Lacey
