Opal’s Cottage offers you a comfortable, quiet, retreat space to relax, enjoy family and friends. The cottage built in the 1970's contemporary style, is nestled in the pines and located just south of Manistee on a bluff with stunning views of Lake Michigan.
From the moment you turn into the drive and pass under the canopy of trees, you enter a space of tranquility and peace. A large deck on the lakeside of the house, leads to the “Tree House” a raised, screened in porch offers comfortable seating with stunning views and gentle breezes.
Located just 10 minutes from downtown Manistee shopping, golf, park, and the river walk, the cottage is a convenient home base for exploring West Michigan.
Eagles, deer, squirrel, chipmunks, and a great variety of birds are regular visitors to the cottage. Birch, pines, and oak trees adorn the property and offer shady places to sit. Below the bluff, down the stairway, and you'll be in Lake Michigan and able to swim or walk the beach. (Please note! Lake Michigan Levels are at a record high and beach width varies with wave and wind action)
Children are always welcome. The cottage is perfect for two families or friends.
The Cottage sleeps up to 10 in three bedrooms (1 queen, 1 full, 4 twins, and a 1 full and 1 queen sofa sleeper) and two baths. A well-appointed kitchen with views of the woods and lake make cooking a joy. Amenities include a microwave, blender, coffee grinder and maker, toaster, and full-sized range and refrigerator.
The central area of the house features an open floor plan with comfortable places to sit and a combined kitchen, dining, and living area. Panoramic views of Lake Michigan abound from two of the three bedrooms and the great room opens out onto the wrap around deck to bring in the sunshine and cool breezes off the lake. Just off the deck, you'll find a screened in porch with the same beautiful view of the lake.
Please note: Lake Michigan level is very high this year. The beach has been eroded quite a bit, there is a bit to walk if you don't mind getting your feet wet. Just to the south of our property, there is a bit more beach room to play in and to the north, you'll find a lovely beach for collecting pretty stones at Magoon Creek Natural Area.
Our stairs (shared with our neighbor) go right down to the water and we are having issues with erosion. They were rebuilt in late August and feature a lovely "bench" that overlooks the water. We are also working on a Dune Stabilization project at the foot of the dune. Work may be taking place in October-December depending on the permit. Be aware that Lake and wave action impact our access.
There is a nice entrance to the beach without the 66 steps through the Lakeland Association property. The Lakeland Association Amenities are for Lakeland Association members only not for Opal's Cottage guests.
