We provide lots of recommendations for what to do, where to go, where to eat. The coast is not far away with the lighthouse near Portland echoing with history, world class restaurants and fun shops. Nearer at hand are a host of delightful small towns, each with their treasures of history and culture. We tell you about our favorites before you arrive, to help you plan.Take one of the easy day trips to the delectable restaurants of Portland, plus lighthouses, observatory; outlet shopping in Freeport; hiking up Bald Mountain (hike is 3.5 miles R/T) near Rangeley, and so many other hikes including a short, super-easy walk in the woods, half an hour away, manageable for even small children; a boat trip on Moosehead Lake in Greenville: Western Maine opportunities for recreation are endless.

The lake at Kiwi Lodge: You will hear loons, ducks, bullfrogs (in June especially); you may see beavers, muskrats (usually swimming across the lake at dusk) and turtles; bald eagles often hover. Guests fish off the end of the dock. Birds wake early; porcupines stroll the roads at midnight.

About Kay

Maine has the same beautiful green hills as our native New Zealand, and the same friendly simplicity of life amongst a small population. Neighbors have time to be helpful. They are happy to chat with you and love to share their knowledge of the area, but will not intrude if you prefer to remain in peaceful solitude. The woods and lakes and rivers give endless opportunities for outdoor recreation or time to quietly reflect and catch up with yourself.

There is no better place for decelerating during a summer vacation.

Why Kay chose Farmington

The moment we saw the house, we felt the attraction of its appearance and surroundings. The moment we stepped inside and saw its charm and excellent design, we knew that this was the special family retreat we had dreamed of. The location is quiet and private, but the local people are very friendly neighbors if you want to be sociable. It is easy to get to other interesting places in Maine, if we can drag ourselves away from having fun on the lake. We can go fishing, or float in the kayak and watch the fish. We can walk around the lake, through the woods, or paddle around the shore in the canoe. Each year, we discover different hiking trails, meet new people, find fun shops in Farmington, more sightseeing spots and even better restaurants.

What makes this lodge unique

The house was designed for year-round living. Perhaps this is why you feel immediately at home there. There is endless enjoyment from having breakfast on the deck, watching the early morning mist rise from the water. Then there is the decision on whether to have the canoe-kayak race or go fishing or try to get that perfect photo of a loon, or go over to Freeport for some outlet shopping and a bowl of lobster bisque at nearby Harraseeket Restaurant - so fresh and good! We can do a few lengths out to the swim raft and back, then go into Farmington to get some heirloom tomatoes from the farmers' market and an ice cream from Giffords. Tomorrow we will go hiking - or maybe just sit in the water hammock and not do too much at all!

Guestbook comments from the owner

The only thing I did not like about Kiwi Lodge is..leaving. On the last morning my husband had to pry the canoe paddle from my fingers. We really had a wonderful time, always something to do..The boys could pop in and out of the boats easily, they were successful at fishing, the hot tub, big screen T.V.s were great, we hiked, rode bikes, loved the fire pit, star gazing at night on the dock was amazing. The lodge was immaculate. Writing brings back great memories. How I wish we were back there.

The property is almost two acres; the house is surrounded by a wide lawn on all sides that slopes gradually towards more than 100 feet of lakefront. There are no neighbors on one side, and a thick screen of pines, birch, oak, ash, maple and other trees give complete privacy on the other side. Lake is in front, and another screen of trees is between lawn and road. The new 55 foot dock is four feet wide, opening out to an octagonal area that has space for seating while you are surrounded by water. This is a green oasis in summer; in fall the colors of the leaves are glorious, a wall of brilliant yellow, red, scarlet, spreading up the hills from the lake.

As Always Everything was Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

It was my third time staying here. Usually it is with my husband and another couple, this time it was a girls weekend, with my old friends from college. They are now all huge Kiwi Lodge Fans too. We had incredible weather, and never left the property. Thank you so much for a fabulous time, once again!

Owner's Response: Jamie, we are delighted to know that the girls' retreat went so well! There is so much to do in the surrounding area but for a group of friends who are combining a career outside the home with caring for a family, it is a wonderful thing to take time off to reconnect and enjoy the beauty, peace and comfort of Kiwi Lodge in the process! We look forward to seeing you again. Kay and the Kiwi Lodge team

Lovely fall getaway

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had a wonderful time celebrating a milestone in our marriage at Kiwi Lodge. The cabin is beautifully laid out, clean and on a lovely lake. Though it was just two of us, it would have easily accomodated many more. The long dining table off the really well stocked kitchen would have been a great place to congregate, but there was also lots of other space so it would not feel crowded even with a house full. The area around Kiwi lodge is stunning in the fall.

Kay was especially easy to work with and she even left us a special surprise to help us celebrate! So thoughtful!

The property is a very special place for our family so we like to make sure others have the same experience - and we work hard to ensure that. We look forward to having you visit again! Enjoyable, very clean house!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 5 recently spent a week at Kiwi Lodge. The house was very clean and had everything we needed. With two teenagers and a 9 year old, the house was plenty big enough to give the older kids their space when they wanted it. We all enjoyed the hot tub, kayaks and played games at the large dining room table. Kay was very accessible and got back to use immediately via phone and email when we had a question. We've been to the Farmington area many times and always enjoy eating at The Harvest House. We also went to the movie theater in town and 3 of us watched a movie with popcorn and drinks for under $30 - a great bargain! One day, we drove to Auburn to play miniature golf at Tabers Golf and Restaurant. The course is right on a lake and a lot of fun to play. While there, we went to Mac's Downeast Seafood for a good lobster dinner. A couple of us tried out the public golf course in Wilton as well as Diadema Golf Course in North Anson. Kiwi Lodge is in a great location with plenty to do at the house or within an hour or so drive.

Great Vacation Rental

  • 4 of 5

We rent a vacation camp annually and found Kay to be one of the most pleasant owners to deal with. She called the evening we checked in to see if we had any questions or needed anything. I've never had an owner do this. The camp was one of the most well stocked we've ever stayed at. It's a beautifully decorated and roomy log cabin....beautiful furnishings. It's a very quiet area. My family enjoyed our stay very much. Thank you for sharing your vacation cabin with us Kay.

Peaceful family vacation

  • 5 of 5

We recently spent a week at the Kiwi Lodge with our sons, ages 11 and 13. It was our first trip to Maine and I looked at hundreds of properties before finally selecting Kiwi Lodge. And it did not disappoint! We spent most of our trip on the lake in the kayaks and peddle boat. The kids loved jumping off the dock and we all enjoyed the family of ducks that visited daily. We ate every meal on the porch, played badminton, relaxed in the hot tub, battled it out on the Xbox Kinect and did a few puzzles. Farmington is a cute town and there are plenty of places for a family hike. Portland/Freeport are a great day trip. But when you leave, you'll really just want to be back on the lake! There were a few days where we had the entire lake to ourselves! I highly recommend this property to anyone who is looking for a great family vacation.
