Overview

About the property

2 BR, 2 BA, full kitchen, beautiful deck. Option to rent nearby casita

Wake up to the sound of the jungle. Bring your binoculars for the wonderful array of exotic birds right off the patio. In this peaceful, secluded and romatic retreat, in an environmentally protected area, you can escape the noise and activity of town. It is just minute's walk (7-10) from it's "own" gorgeous beach and close enough to town for nice walks through fabulous jungle (1.3 miles south of town.)

This is a house with character--a 100 year old Balinese teak house and casita perched above papalillo trees and palms, with a view of Monkey Mountain. The two bedrooms consist of 1 king bed, one queen, and there is a Bali bed in the living room, for a smaller person. The deck overlooking the jungle has two daybeds to relax, read and watch the amazing birds.

Throw open the hand carved shutters to the soothing air of the sea and jungle. On 3+ acres of exoctic, lush land, it is set in a grouping of 5 other like-style houses, all barely visible from each other on cobblestoned roads. A short stroll (7-10 minutes) takes you to a stunning, secluded beach, or walk the jungle road to town for your morning cappucino or noon fish tacos...And when day is done, fall asleep to the sounds of the jungle, the waves.

OUr retreat is actually 2 separate rentable houses; the Main Casa (2 bedroom, full kitchen, huge deck and patio) and the Casita (1 bedroom with deck overlooking jungle, mini "kitchen"). They can be rented separately or together. THIS LISTING IS JUST FOR THE 2 BEDROOM MAIN HOUSE.

Sayulita is a happening, cobblestoned Mexican fishing town with a friendly, happening zocolo (central plaza) as well as fantastic restaurants and shops. Take yoga , learn Spanish, explore the jungle, surf, snorkle or just relax with a margarita to the sounds of the surf and jungle.

About Liz Collins

I am an artist living in northern California, and have made a living with my art for over 30 years. I have always been inspired by different and exotic areas of the world. This jungle retreat had been a dream for me for many years. I come to the jungle retreat to write and do my art. I also lead art retreats there each spring.

Liz Collins purchased this house in 2007

Why Liz Collins chose Sayulita

I LOVE the jungle with a passion, and real jungle is hard to find. Since I also love Sayulita and visted it for many years prior, when this place opened up it was literally (literally) my dream that came to life. It is thankfully removed from town just enough to get away during those busy times of year, but easy to walk to on a beautiful jungle road. Also, since it is in an enclave of 5 other Balinese houses, you do not feel too "out there" with no one else around.

The beach that it is near feels like our own private beach, and honestly, it is one of the nicest in Sayulita (it is a secret!)

What makes this house unique

Bird watching! If you have ANY desire, this is the place if you get up by oh, say around 8:00-9:00. A birder I know said they saw more birds here in one sitting than any where else they'd been in the world! Prior to owning Jungle Retreat, I would not have considered myself a "birder" but I can probably say now I would.

Also, the quiet. At night you can hear the waves usually, and in the evenings to sit on the comfortable patio with chips and salsa listening to the "guard " of day switching to night you feel like you never need to leave...

Guestbook comments from the owner

"It's a jungle out there"

This place is the definition of getting away. You are in the jungle but still within walking distance of the town.

Total privacy, well maintained, a pure treat.

A unique and lovely place

  • 5 of 5

Liz's "Jungle Retreat" is just that. Nestled in the jungle canopy, with a fabulous soundscape from all the jungle wildlife, is a little community of south-Asian homes imported plank by plank from Bali. Totally unexpected, wonderfully unique, Liz's house is a mix of Asian and Mexican influences enhanced by her own exuberant artwork. We just loved our stay there.

The nearby beach, Patzcuarito, is heavenly and, in our experience, nearly deserted except for a couple local dogs who were happy to play with us in the surf. We enjoyed Patzcuarito far more than the bigger and busier Sayulita beaches.

Back at the house, you can expect the land crabs to join you on the patio and, if you're not looking, even inside the house. They're cool, harmless and amusing little creatures and our kids thoroughly enjoyed following them around the property. The house itself is absolutely clean, tidy and comfortable for hanging out.

A really great find, and we'd highly recommend it.

Beautiful home in the jungle

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautiful home in the jungle that is plenty big for two adult couples or a larger family. Liza was great to work with and attentive in terms of questions regarding directions (her "how to get there" suite of documents was spot-one) and other miscellaneous items.

Rejuvenated and Refreshed

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 2 glorious weeks and found it very hard to leave!

My husband and I had never been to this part of the world, while the couple we travelled with had stayed in Sayulita the previous year. We had all sorts of plans to do many things yet found that we spent most of our time enjoying the house and nearby beach. This house was great for those who like to cook, after a fishing trip we ate lovely fish for 2 weeks, along with some delicious meals in town. True tranquillity and the walk into town for supplies left me feeling stronger, my legs were very grateful. I have never seen so many colorful birds and the bookshop in town sells a wonderful local bird guide for pennies. The house itself is stunning and we had the opportunity to meet unforgettable people staying in other houses and casitas, a true community. The nearby beach was stunning and practically deserted, I have never seen such beautiful sand, and it was the first time I did yoga on sparkly sand in front of beautiful ocean waves. We look forward to returning next year, and can say nothing but good things about our experience. We had peace when we wanted it and could go into town whenever we wanted to.

Jungle getaway- delightful.

  • 5 of 5

Bird calls and the sound of crashing waves from nearby Patzcuaro beach complement the exotic Balinese architecture to complete a compelling vision of rustic paradise. The "Jungle Retreat" is choice destination for the traveler desiring privacy near the popular surf town of Sayulita-

Great restaurants, good surf, and a warm local vibe are a pleasant mile hike away-

We stayed with our 10 year old daughter in the Casita and had a fab time- Great private beach time nearby if you don't want to go into town and/ or face the crowds-

Ideally rent the main house or the main house + Casita with friends, as the Casita does not have a full kitchen- though we got handy with the microwave + dorm fridge- (Quesadillas anyone? )

Great value for the price - and an experience your friends staying in town won't get.

Owner's Response: For those of you who know the area, Patzcuaro Beach (as named in this review) is quite a bit farther from town than our beach which is called "Patzcuarito"

"Quiet and peaceful jungle experience"

  • 5 of 5

Upon arriving the first view is gorgeous to see the magnificent Balinese homes stand out while at the same time blending perfectly with the backdrop of the jungle. The homes transport you to an almost fairy tale land of intricately designed and carved teak structures cozily sitting in the serenity of the jungle. We stayed in the casa with all of the comforts of home and the added benefit of being greeted by the sight and song of beautiful tropical birds and an array of flowers. Morning coffee on the outdoor patio competed with dinner on the spacious side porch for the best time of the day. The interior is colorful with nice art and with Balinese furniture that I could only wish was in my own home. The on-sight manager, fluent in English and Spanish, was very friendly and always helpful and available if needed. The homes are situated an easy 5 or so minute walk to a beautiful and almost always empty beach for swimming, sun bathing, or watching the sunsets. With a full kitchen (in the casa) and a hearty supply of fresh fruits and vegetables in town there was little need to visit restaurants and the sometime commotion of this vibrant and fun village, but heading into town was always a pleasant, thoughtful, and easy walk through a wide road in the jungle. The home was clean and fully stocked with towels, comfortable beds, and all kitchen necessities. Most impressive was our dealings with the owner whose sincere concern for hospitality and wishing her guests a wonderful vacation was obvious and reassuring. My twelve-year-old daughter loved the entire experience including taking, with me, two weeklong Spanish classes in town. For anyone wishing a wonderful vacation, with or without children, in a fun and quaint Mexican village and being able to stay in a remarkably unique and comfortable home in a pristine setting, I highly recommend staying here.

A Romantic get-away. It was the BEST!

  • 5 of 5

This secluded jungle retreat far exceeded our expectations. We had privacy and access to a secluded beach, but were just a short walk from town. Could not have been better situated. We spent the mornings bird watching from the terraces and decks. We spent part of the day at the beach and walked home for lunch. One afternoon we walked to an adjacent small and secluded resort where we had messages and a drink at the bar. There is no end to activities just outside the door.

As an architect I can really appreciate the beauty of the house and casita which were built from mahogany with traditional techniques and brought to Mexico to be reconstructed. You have to visit this place in person to get the full experience of the peacefulness and beauty.

The house and casita are well taken care of and had flowers in every room when we arrived. The fabrics and pillows are bright and cheerful and the traditional furniture very comfortable. You can take a nap or sleep outside on the large couches under the porch roof. This is a great place to hang out or entertain when it rains. One of our favorite places.

If you are going, bring binoculars as there is so much to be seen, even if you are not a true birder! Have a great trip.
